Chapter 122 She's Just a Pawn

Chapter 122 She's Just a Pawn
Kaelen's POV

I opened my eyes to find myself staring at an unfamiliar ceiling. For a moment I was completely disoriented, my mind struggling to reconcile my last conscious memory of throwing myself in front of that lightning strike with this peaceful bedroom scene.

I turned my head slowly, testing my body's responses and finding everything seemed to be working normally despite the ordeal I'd been through. That's when I saw her.

Elara was slumped in a chair beside the bed with her head resting on the mattress near my hip, silver-white hair spilling across the blankets in a cascade that caught the morning light and seemed to glow. Her face was turned toward me, eyes closed and lips slightly parted in sleep, with dark circles under her eyes that spoke of exhaustion and worry. Even in sleep her brow was furrowed slightly, as if she couldn't fully relax even in unconsciousness.

My chest tightened with emotion so intense it was almost painful. She'd stayed with me the entire time, keeping watch and waiting for me to wake up, pushing herself past the point of collapse because she refused to leave my side. The devotion implicit in that simple act hit me harder than any physical blow could have.

I looked down and realized my left hand was resting palm-up on the bed, and three of Elara's fingers were curled loosely around my pinky finger in a grip that had probably been firmer before exhaustion claimed her. The touch was so gentle, so trusting, and I could see white gauze wrapped around her palm with small spots of red seeping through where blood had soaked into the bandage.

My heart clenched as I stared at that injury. I carefully shifted my hand to press my fingertips against her palm, right over the bandaged wound, and called up the gentlest thread of my healing magic. Golden light seeped from my skin into hers, as I directed the energy to knit together the damaged tissue and ease whatever pain she might be feeling even in sleep.

The slight movement and the warmth of the healing magic must have been enough to disturb her rest, because I saw her eyelashes flutter and then slowly lift. Her eyes were unfocused at first, still clouded with sleep and confusion, but then they cleared and sharpened as full awareness returned. Those silver-gray depths locked onto my face and widened with an emotion so intense it took my breath away.

"Kaelen," she breathed, her voice rough from exhaustion but filled with relief and joy that made my heart skip. "You're awake. You're finally awake."

Her fingers tightened around mine reflexively, no longer the loose grip of sleep but a conscious connection that she clearly had no intention of breaking. I could see her eyes scanning my face rapidly, checking for signs of pain or confusion or any indication that something might still be wrong.

"I'm awake," I confirmed, my voice coming out lower and rougher than normal after hours of disuse. The sound was almost gravelly, but I managed to infuse it with all the warmth and reassurance I could muster. "I'm here, Elara. I'm alright."

I watched her eyes fill with tears that she blinked back furiously, clearly trying to maintain her composure even as emotion threatened to overwhelm her. She pushed herself upright in the chair with visible effort, her free hand coming up to scrub at her face as she tried to pull herself together.

"You were unconscious for so long," she said, her voice wavering slightly despite her attempts to keep it steady. "Malcolm said you were fine, that your body was just healing itself, but I was so worried. I couldn't feel you properly through the bond and I didn't know if you were in pain or if something was going wrong inside where no one could see."

I turned my hand over to properly grip hers, our fingers interlacing in a hold that felt infinitely more secure than the gentle touch we'd maintained while she slept. "How long was I out?" I asked, needing to establish a timeline and figure out what I'd missed.

"Almost eight hours," Elara replied, glancing toward the windows where the sun was clearly well above the horizon. "It's almost nine in the morning now. Malcolm checked on you twice during the night and kept saying everything looked normal, but you just wouldn't wake up and I was starting to think maybe he was wrong."

Eight hours. I'd lost eight hours to that spiritual battle in the void, and Elara had apparently spent every single one of those hours sitting in this chair and watching over me. The realization made my throat tight with emotions I didn't have adequate words to express.

"You stayed here the whole time?" I asked, even though I already knew the answer. "You didn't rest or take care of yourself?"

Elara's expression shifted into something defensive, her chin lifting slightly as she met my gaze directly. "You threw yourself in front of a killing blow meant for me. You absorbed an attack that should have torn your soul apart, all to protect me from harm. How could I possibly leave your side after that? How could I do anything except wait here until you opened your eyes again?"

The raw honesty in her words and the fierce protectiveness in her expression made something warm unfurl in my chest. This incredible woman had fought a parasitic entity, destroyed it with ancient Guardian magic, and then sat vigil over my unconscious body for eight straight hours without complaint. She was exhausted and injured and probably running on nothing but willpower at this point, but her first concern was still for my wellbeing.

"Tell me what happened after I went down," I said quietly, needing to know the full story. "I need to understand everything that occurred while I was unconscious."

Elara took a deep breath and began recounting the events in careful detail, her voice growing steadier as she fell into the familiar rhythm of mission reporting. She explained how the parasitic entity had tried to invade my body through the point of contact, how the golden essence within me had risen up to defend against the intrusion, and how she'd activated her Guardian bloodline powers to blood-sacrifice and awaken the moon-crescent blade.

She described using the blade to sever the entity's connection to its main body and then tracking the separated fragment through the magical signature it left behind. Her account of the final confrontation was methodical and precise, detailing exactly how she'd converted the parasitic energy and used it to destroy the entity's core completely.

When she finished explaining how she'd bound Aurora with a silencing spell and had her taken to the Pack dungeons, I felt a surge of pride mixed with concern. She'd handled an incredibly dangerous situation with skill and bravery, but the cost had been steep and I could see the exhaustion weighing on her even now.

"Aurora was just a pawn," I said, my voice hardening as I thought about the larger threat still looming over us all. "The real danger is Malakai. We need to find him and stop him before the blood moon reaches its peak. If he completes that soul-harvesting array, hundreds of trapped spirits will be consumed and his power will become almost unstoppable."

Elara nodded, her expression shifting into the focused determination I'd come to associate with her tactical planning mode. "My dad and Damian have already been coordinating with the other Packs. Everyone's agreed to form a united front against Malakai. They're mobilizing their warriors and preparing for a large-scale assault once we locate his base of operations."

"Nightshade Pack is ready as well," I added. "My father has assembled our elite combat units and they're standing by for deployment orders. The key now is finding Malakai's location and identifying where he's anchored the core of his soul-harvesting array. Once we have those coordinates, we can strike with overwhelming force before he has a chance to complete his ritual."
