Chapter 119 Take the Bolt for Me

Chapter 119 Take the Bolt for Me
Elara's POV

The three bolts of divine lightning struck the containment array with devastating force, and I felt the reverberation through every bone in my body as purple fire consumed the barrier.

The crimson sphere at the center shrieked as the lightning found its target, and I watched through streaming eyes as the parasitic entity's outer shell began to crack under the assault of genuine divine judgment.

Seven bolts of crimson electricity erupted from within the sphere itself, shooting outward in a defensive pattern that intercepted my silver-white lightning mid-strike. The collision sent shockwaves rippling through the air, and I felt the magical backlash slam into my chest as my spell was deflected away from its intended target.

The divine lightning veered off course, only managing to shear away roughly half of the entity's total energy mass. The crimson sphere contracted violently, but it was still intact and very much alive, and I could feel its rage radiating outward like heat from a furnace.

My knees buckled and I caught myself against the moon-silver staff, using it as support while my body struggled to compensate for the massive drain on my magical reserves. My vision swam and dark spots danced at the edges of my sight, warning signs that I was dangerously close to complete magical exhaustion.

I couldn't stop now. The entity was wounded and vulnerable.

My trembling fingers fumbled at the inner pocket of my cloak, searching for the Thunder Scroll. I pulled it free and pressed it against the top of my staff, watching as the ancient paper adhered to the moonstone and began to glow with building power.

I bit down on my tongue hard enough to draw blood, using the pain to force my flagging concentration back into focus. I spat the blood onto the scroll and spoke the words of activation, feeling the paper ignite with silver fire.

"Fulgur sanctum, ultima voluntas mea," I gasped out. "Descendat nunc!"

The sky split open and a massive bolt of divine lightning descended with enough force to shake the ground. This one was twice the size of the previous three combined, a pillar of purple-white radiance that fell toward the wounded entity with the inevitability of fate itself.

The crimson sphere responded immediately, and twelve bolts of flame-wreathed lightning erupted from its surface in a defensive formation. One of the crimson bolts broke free and shot directly toward me with lethal intent. I tried to move, but my body wouldn't respond fast enough.

"Elara!" Kaelen's voice cut through the chaos, and then he was there, his body slamming into mine as he positioned himself between me and the incoming attack.

The crimson lightning struck him square in the chest. But instead of the burning agony I'd expected, something impossible happened. The golden soul fragment in Kaelen's core suddenly blazed to life with blinding intensity, erupting outward in a wave of radiance that filled the entire clearing.

The crimson lightning hit that golden barrier and simply vanished, absorbed completely into Kaelen's spiritual essence without leaving so much as a scorch mark. For a single heartbeat, Kaelen's entire form was limned in golden fire, and then the light cut off abruptly and he collapsed, his unconscious body hitting the ground hard.

"Kaelen!" I screamed and tried to reach him, but my legs gave out completely and I went down on my hands and knees.

Heavy footsteps pounded across the ground and I looked up to see Damian and Sebastian racing toward us from the main house, their faces masks of concern and barely controlled panic.

"Stay back!" I forced the words out through gritted teeth. "Don't come any closer! The entity is still active!"

They skidded to a halt about twenty feet away. I crawled to where Kaelen lay motionless and pressed my fingers against his neck, feeling the steady throb of his heartbeat. Relief flooded through me. He was alive and his heart rate was strong, no signs of the kind of damage that flame-wreathed lightning should have inflicted.

My hands moved over his chest and arms, checking for burns or internal injuries, but his skin was completely unmarked. The only visible change was a faint golden shimmer that pulsed beneath his skin in time with his heartbeat.

Where had the energy gone? Had it been neutralized, or had it been stored somehow, added to the power the soul fragment already contained?

Movement in my peripheral vision snapped my attention back to the immediate threat. The crimson sphere had contracted to the size of a basketball, but I could sense the desperate fury radiating from it as it calculated its rapidly dwindling options.

The entity's magical presence suddenly spiked and I felt it reaching outward, scanning the area. Its attention swept over me dismissively, passed over Damian and Sebastian, and then locked onto Kaelen's unconscious form with an intensity that made my blood run cold.

The golden soul fragment inside Kaelen contained power that far exceeded even the concentrated essence of destiny. That fragment was genuine divinity, and the entity had just lost most of its accumulated strength.

The crimson sphere shot toward Kaelen with shocking speed, abandoning all caution in its desperation to claim a new vessel. I watched it close the distance, already reaching out with spiritual tendrils to begin the forced possession process.

My hand moved before conscious thought could interfere, drawing the moon-crescent blade from its sheath in a single fluid motion. I slashed my palm across its edge, feeling the bite and the hot rush of blood that immediately began soaking into the pale wood. The moonstone embedded in the blade's hilt flared to life as my Guardian blood activated its dormant enchantments.

My silver-gray eyes ignited with killing intent and I channeled every ounce of protective fury into my voice as I roared at the approaching entity.

"How dare you!" The words came out laden with enough magical authority to make the ground tremble. "You think a parasite like you has the right to touch him?!"

I swung the blade in a horizontal arc that intersected the entity's trajectory, and the moon-crescent edge carved through the crimson sphere like it was cutting through water. The blade passed through the entity's core and I felt the resistance as it severed roughly a third of the sphere's remaining mass, the separated portion dissipating into harmless vapor.

The entity's shriek of shock and pain was almost ultrasonic, and I felt it recoil from my blade with genuine fear. The crimson sphere tumbled through the air before righting itself, and I could sense its attention focusing on my weapon with sudden horrified recognition.

The wooden blade shouldn't have been able to harm it at all. But my moon-crescent blade had cut through its core as easily as steel through flesh, and now the entity was sensing something about the weapon that triggered an instinctive terror.

I felt it reach out to examine the blade more closely, and then its presence recoiled violently as it detected the residual energy signature still clinging to the wooden surface. The entity recognized that energy because it came from its own separated fragment that I'd destroyed in the forest, the unmistakable imprint now fused with my Guardian blood.

I didn't give the entity time to process the implications. My body moved despite the screaming protests from my overtaxed muscles, and I sketched three overlapping protective circles around Kaelen's unconscious form using my blood as ink. The first was a six-pointed star, the second was a lunar phase pattern, and the third was composed of ancient Guardian script.

The three layers activated simultaneously, creating a barrier that pulsed with silver-white light and completely sealed Kaelen off from any external magical interference. I straightened up with the moon-crescent blade held ready, my left hand pressed against my ribs where I could feel the sharp ache of depleted energy reserves.

The entity hung in the air about fifteen feet away, its form reduced to barely a quarter of its original size and flickering with instability. I could sense its calculation as it weighed its options.

I took a step forward and the entity immediately jerked backward, maintaining the distance between us. My lips pulled back from my teeth in something that wasn't quite a smile.

"Run," I said softly. "Let's see how far you can get."

My body moved and I was running, activating the movement technique that let me traverse short distances at speeds that made me flicker in and out of existence. The entity twisted away and shot toward the tree line, abandoning any thought of continuing the fight.

I pursued it into the forest, the moon-crescent blade leaving a trail of silver light as I closed the distance. My magical reserves were running on fumes, but I could sense the entity's energy signature as clearly as if it were painted in neon colors.

The entity wove between trees and tried to lose me by changing direction unpredictably, but I matched every turn with mechanical precision. I was gaining ground steadily.

Then the entity reached out with its spiritual presence and tried to issue a command to the residual energy marker on my blade, attempting to recall the power back into its core where it could be reabsorbed.

I felt the pull immediately, a sudden tugging sensation as the entity's will tried to yank the fused energy out of the blade. For a moment, I thought it might actually work.

Then the entity's command hit the barrier of my bloodline and simply stopped. The energy wasn't just marked by my presence, it had been fundamentally altered, converted from parasitic essence into something that resonated with Guardian magic instead.

The entity couldn't control it anymore because it wasn't the entity's power anymore. It was mine.

The entity's presence flared with rage so intense I could taste it in the air. It had just realized that I'd stolen what remained and turned it into a weapon specifically designed to hunt it down.

I was close enough now that I could have lunged forward and struck at its core, but before I could execute the attack, a figure stumbled out from behind a massive oak tree directly in the entity's path. Aurora collapsed to her knees, her body still showing the effects of having her soul partially torn apart, one entire side of her face and torso covered in electrical burns.

Her hand clutched something against her chest, a small cloth doll that looked handmade and worn. Her other hand came up to grip the doll's neck in a chokehold, her fingers positioned to twist and snap the fragile cloth with minimal effort.

The moon-crescent blade was already in motion, the tip aimed directly at the entity's exposed core, when Aurora's voice cut through the night with desperate intensity.

"Stop!" she screamed. "This doll has Matilda's soul sealed inside it! You take one more step and I'll crush her spirit completely!"
