Chapter 53 Chapter 53
Violet
This time I was the one to shrug it off.
“Its nothing. I was simply wondering about my job.”
I didn’t tell her how I recalled my dad had taken that name earlier as well. I hadn’t asked him if Alpha Deveraux was the one who had offered him some help.
Going by Cassie’s words, he seemed scary and if he found out that the daughter of the man who had asked him for help had turned down the invitation to dine with him, he could simply wipe out my dad’s pack out of existence in a single night.
My heart filled with dread at that thought. Plus there was my dream job that I had just secured.
I had to find a really good reason to give to the Stratford’s so they dont think I was taking advantage of their leniency. Plus, there was Mirelle, who had been cold to me.
She would definitely hate a new joiner to postpone her joining even if the earth shattered to pieces.
“Relax, you are yet to join. We will be in and out of the Deveraux manor in the night. Then you are free to work in your dream job.”
“We are going to Ironcrest manor for dinner?” I exclaimed yet again.
Apparently, I had been too blind to read the entire invitation because my brain had been stuck on that surname for a while.
Cassie gave me a funny look.
“You are really being weird right now.”
“You should have really told me all this earlier. Now what do I tell Dane that his grand plan of competing…”
I stopped short of completing the sentence, my mouth forming a big O.
‘Earth to Violet. Do you need a doctor?”
No way could I tell her that I was going to work for someone who wanted to compete with her father. And that he wanted to use my designs to do that.
This was too much to process. My head was growing dizzy and I put my hands over my head, wondering how I ended up in such a situation.
Cassie stood up and gently patted my back, “at this rate, you are going to crash. Just save your energy for the big day.”
I looked at her meekly.
“Its supposed to be a family dinner. I am not a part of your family. Just tell your father, I disappeared from the face of the earth. I don’t want to lose my job.”
Cassie went down on her knees and took my hands in hers.
“Relax, its just one night. I will get Elijah to book a flight the moment we are done with the dinner. You don’t even have to stay overnight.”
That was some reassurance. He must be meeting so many people on a daily basis, he wont remember a nobody like me if I made some mistake.
“I will book my flights on my own, no need for Elijah to do so.” I said, feeling slightly better about the entire situation.
But this time Cassie’s face fell.
“Whats the matter now?” I asked as I looked at her crumpled face.
“Well, he found out about my big plan and the fake injuries so currently he is kinda not really in the mood to talk to me. So I was wondering if you would appease him. I booked his seat next to yours for that same reason.”
She had to be kidding me!
“I will murder you, Cassie, if your dad won’t!”
No matter how much I screamed at her or got worried, Cassie had a way of tugging at my heart and shoving that puppy face whenever I started to back out.
I spent several hours arguing with her of how this was a horrible idea but she was too stubborn for my liking.
And despite everything, a part of me wanted to meet the man who was a founding member of our society. Ironcrest manor and pack was rich with history, and our werewolf heritage.
Getting entry in the manor was next to impossible for someone as ordinary as me so even if I dreaded everything else, I was also looking forward to get a glimpse of our history.
Plus, cassie assured me thousand times that we wont spend more than a day at the manor at best hence I grudgingly gave in.
“Just tell me how you convinced your father to let me be included in a family dinner” I asked her for the hundredth time.
I wasn’t convinced he could just let a random girl walk in through the gates of his prestigious pack just because his daughter was throwing a tantrum.
Cassie responded with a chuckle.
“Well, just the same trick I used with Elijah. He learned that we got injured, I also told him how you showed up to save me and that tough heart softened just enough for me to push.”
I shook my head.
“You really are a manipulator”
“Oi,” she hit me on the shoulder. “That’s called leveraging. Plus, I am looking forward to seeing Elijah in the manor more than anything. He hates it to the core.”
Cassie’s ideas of fun were really weird.
“Why do you want to push people into awkward situations is something I will never understand.”
This time she gave a sad smile.
“Trust me, at the end of all this, he will thank me.”
Well that reminded me of the other problem.
“I am not sitting next to him, certainly not for the entire flight.”
Cassie patted my cheek as if she was pacifying a toddler. “Oh you will be alright. Better than having the huge bodyguard breathing down my neck all the time.”
She said, eyeing the tall man who was standing at a distance from us but stuck out like a sore thumb instead of blending with the crowd.
“Why do you have a bodyguard?”
“Because my brother thinks rogues have nothing else to do except pounce on me wherever I go. Plus, I couldn’t argue with him after the whole fake injury fiasco.”
My phone rang the next second and Nate’s name flashed on the screen. Why the hell was he calling me?
Cassie saw the name and immediately jumped up to snatch the phone from me.
“Let me talk to him. I will give him a piece of my mind.”
“Of course not” I held the phone high up above my head while she tried to jump upon me like a monkey.
“That or I will tell Elijah to book a private jet so you are stuck with him.” Cassie stepped on my toes, making me wince.
“Absolutely not. I am going to the Ironcrest Manor for history lessons, not having your arrogant and annoyed brother watch me like a hawk.”
“I’d rather be dead than breathe the same air as your stupid brother.”
Cassie finally gave up and I managed to push her away. But when I did, I realized two things.
The call receive button had been swiped up accidentally during our tussle, meaning Nate had heard everything and second, Elijah had heard it too.
Because he was standing right in front of us.
