Chapter 43 Chapter 43
Violet
To say that the entire night I kept pacing the room and turning from one side to the other on the bed was an understatement.
I deliberately left the phone in my room and went to have some late night icecream with my parents. It was quite late when I finally returned to my room.
My mood was slightly better as well. And I somehow felt guilty for lashing out at him even though he deserved it.
I had expected to find a missed call or at least a text from him, but there was nothing. And it made me even more cranky.
How could he just distance himself from me like that? What about the sweet stuff he had said to me in the car of caring about me. Even if it had not been directly aimed at me.
And what about the fire I had seen in his eyes when he kissed me, when he growled low in my mouth?
That definitely had not been just my imagination.
Sighing, I kept tossing and turning in the bed and must have gotten a few hours of sleep before the sun was sliding up the horizon yet again.
Breakfast happened rather quickly and I decided to pay Cassie a short visit. I really wanted to share the news with someone and she would be a good choice.
Hence, ignoring my confusion over Elijah, I quickly got into the car and drove straight to his place. Only then I realized I should have probably driven to the hospital but I wasn’t sure where exactly it was. I hadn’t paid attention to its exact location earlier.
I debated giving him a call at first and called Cassie’s phone instead but it went unanswered. I wasn’t sure if she was discharged yet and I also didn’t have Tyler or Gavin’s number.
After standing like an idiot for a full minute, I dialed Elijah’s number. It went straight to voicemail and I looked around in order to decide which way to go.
And I realized something stupid. I lived in my parents’ pack so we had a gate and a border but where was the border to Elijah’s pack?
I could just drive to his place right away without any huge fleet of guards or big iron gates. Did he live away from the rest of the pack?
Thankfully, it was a text from Elijah with brief directions to the hospital. There was no hi or hello, no warm wishes though I wasn’t even sure why I expected that.
After mentally scolding myself, I drove as per instructions and on the way took a good look at the houses around me. They all appeared to be a part of a small community with no fences and ample open space, trees etc but no guards roaming around in uniforms, no security checks every few minutes.
I was impressed as well as confused by it. It had been nighttime when I was last here so I hadn’t really noticed the surroundings but now I did.
And it fascinated me.
I parked outside the hospital and went inside but there was no sign of Elijah. The receptionist guided me to Cassie’s room and I found her sleeping peacefully on the bed.
I should have gotten her flowers but it was too late for that now. Her face was still a bit pale and her bandages seemed to have been freshly replaced.
Slowly, I approached her and gently sat beside her. Her breathing was low but the various tubes attached to her body showed normal readings on the screens behind her.
“Sorry for not coming to meet you yesterday” I whispered and reached for her other arm.
Her fingers twitched when I reached for it and her eyes opened.
She looked at me and smiled but I could see that the simple effort cost her a lot.
“Relax” I mumbled and inched closer to her.
However, she again opened her mouth to say something so I leaned over her, placing my ear as close as possible.
“Missed you”
And those simple words somehow made me feel guiltier than anything else. I had been angry with Elijah but I should not have ignored her.
My eyes grew moist and I replied. “Sorry, I won’t make any promises but I will try to not keep you waiting from now on.”
The doctor walked in for his daily visit and smiled at us.
“Oh you are here? Tell your friend to rest properly, she kept waiting for you all day yesterday.”
“I will” I answered, dodging another wave of guilt that wanted to drown me.
“How is she doing? When can she leave the hospital?” I enquired.
“Her condition is improving steadily and most of the injuries have healed signigicantly. But the loss of blood left her with anemia. Hence, she will continue to feel tired and weak for a few weeks but if she rests and eats properly, I will say she will be running around in no time.”
That brought a smile of relief on my face.
If she was getting better soon, that meant I could also tell her about my possible job and how I will be only available on weekends to meet her.
Hopefully, my joining date could be pushed back for a few days if things go well with Dane.
All in all, I felt better to have enough free time to spend with her for a few days.
“That is great, thank you doctor”
He checked her reports and advised. “I will allow an early discharge by risking my neck in front of the alpha if you promise to take your medicines on time. If your brother finds out, I gave in to your request earlier than necessary, you will find a new doctor to treat all the patients here.”
His threat was kind and I heard myself chuckle at that.
“How early can you release her?”
The doctor scribbled something on the notepad and answered. “Today”
Wait today?
“But she can’t even speak properly yet and all the bandages….” I began but then Cassie immediately opened her eyes wide, got up and tore off the bandages.
“Cassie! What are you doing?” I shrieked but then the doctor also started laughing with her.
“What is going on?”
Cassie jumped down from the bed as if she wasn’t injured at all and gave me a bow.
“How was my performance?”
“Performance?”
She blew air on her nails and flipped her hair.
“Of course. I had just been knocked unconscious and most of the blood on me was not my own.”
“But…I saw the rogue slicing at you…”
“He did injure me but not as much as you all imagined. It was just too much blood for anybody to get a good look at the real damage.”
The doctor continued. “And miss Cassie wanted the alpha to agree to a request of hers so asked me to exaggerate certain aspects of her injury.”
I stared from the doctor to Cassie dumbfoundedly.
“You lied to Elijah?”
