Tite – A year later
I laughed as the pack of toddlers ran past me. They were chasing a red fox and I could see how much fun Lizzy was having. I walked on to the lounge chairs standing in the shade.
“Lemonade,” I announced to the group of Lunas and held up the two pitchers in my hands.
“Amazing!” Alice said.
“You spoil us,” Rayvin told me. I filled everyone’s glass and took a seat.
“You don’t think your Gamma female minds watching the pups?” Bella asked as she watched the fox dodge a wolf pup trying to catch it.
"Not at all. She's having the time of her life. She and Bo have been talking about getting a pup of their own," I told her. I was happy they had all accepted our invitation to come and celebrate our one-year anniversary of being a pack. They had all been such good friends, and I don’t know how I would have got through the first year without their help and support.
"Speaking of having pups, how is Amber doing?" Alice asked. My brother and Amber had welcomed their first pup into the world the week before.
"She and little Tor are both doing amazingly. My brother is, as all Alphas are, being a tad overprotective," I told them. "My dad has stepped in temporarily to lead the pack for a month to let them have some time to themselves," I said.
"Gray's parents did the same when we had the beans; it was a blessing," Bella told us.
"We don't have any grandparents to rely on, but Diana and Ben stepped up," Rayvin shared. Her son, Lewis, was doing his best to try and keep up with the other pups. He was a year and a half younger than most of them. As we watched, Theo stopped and waited for Lewis to catch up. As soon as Stella noticed her brother wasn't next to her, she stopped as well, and Gil did a U-turn and trotted up to her to wait for the other two.
"They are so cute," I said. The mothers laughed.
"Yeah, like this they are," Bella agreed.
"Gil has descended into the terrible twos," Alice sighed.
"They are terrible," Bella agreed, and then giggled.
"I still have a year left before that," Rayvin told us. "Goddess help all of us when we get there. Lewis has inherited my temper; it's lucky for the pack the myth about dragons breathing fire isn't true." We all laughed. We watched the pups play again.
"You have really changed this place since we were here last time," Bella remarked and looked around. I could feel myself beaming with pride.
“It has been an amazing year. There have been some smaller setbacks and minor issues, but overall things have gone smoothly,” I told everyone. The pack house had been fully renovated with bigger apartments, more common areas where the pack could spend time together, and offices for the top tier. Around it, a village had started to form. Ten new houses had been built for families, and we had built fifteen more on the pack land. Shops had also been built around the pack house. Beridan had a new coffee shop, a grocery store, a burger joint, a petrol station, a bookshop, and an artisan shop that sold homemade jewellery, paintings and other handcrafted things. The only thing that had caused issues was when Sharp had decided to persuade another club that we had grown weak, and they all came for us. Honestly, it had been more of an irritation than a real threat. Our patrols had seen them coming and warned the rest of us. We had more than enough time to make sure the families were safe and mount a response. Bo had done wonders as gamma, and we had a good set of warriors, both human and magical creatures. We had ridden out to meet them just as they crossed into our territory. We hadn’t needed to fight them, no one had needed to shift or use magic. As soon as they saw us and how well equipped we were, they had turned around. Rumours said Sharp had barely escaped with his life as the other club had turned on him, thinking he was trying to lure them into a defeat.
“How are you doing? Are you having fun gossiping?” Mikael asked, bending down to kiss Rayvin.
“We are not gossiping, we are talking about important Luna things,” Bella objected.
“That’s right,” I agreed. Nash chuckled as he bent down and kissed me.
“You came back without us having to find you,” Alice pointed out as she and Bella greeted their mates as well. “This is progress.” We all laughed.
Later in the afternoon, we were having a BBQ in the backyard. Theo was sitting next to me, eating a hotdog and trying to tell me about how they had a forest to play in at home. I listened and told him it sounded fun. As he finished the hotdog, I took a napkin and wiped his hands and mouth. It didn’t do much good as he started in on a burger straight away. I smiled. The Alpha appetite was strong in him.
‘You look like a natural,’ Nash mind-linked me and added more coleslaw to my plate, knowing I loved it. I kissed his cheek as he was being sweet.
‘He is adorable,’ I answered.
'You both are.' I had been getting practice with babies, as Jane and Little's daughter was almost six months old by now. It was different with a human baby than with a pup, and we all needed to adapt to the differences. The celebrations were much calmer this time, more family-oriented. Just before the pups' bedtime, Nash and I took them out into the desert, not far, just enough to get some distance from the houses. We set up a feast with homemade bread and milk with honey. Ajaw never disappointed, and he and his people came walking out of the shadows.
"Alpha Nash, Luna Tite," he said with a smile.
"Ajaw, thank you for coming. We are celebrating a prosperous year for the pack, and as you have watched over our land, this is our thanks," I told him. The pups watched as the chaneques started to eat and drink. As always, they started to sing and dance. Soon the four pups had joined in, and the chaneques looked thrilled to have company. I took out my phone, filmed it, and sent the film to the parents. Nash put his arm around me and kissed my hair.
"I want one of those," I told him.
"What? A chaneque?" he asked. I giggled.
"No, silly. A pup."
"Now?" he asked, looking at me.
"Well, I'm not suggesting we get one now, but yes. I think I'm ready for us to start trying," I said. "Would that be okay?" I wanted to know.
"Kitten, I would be more than happy to have a little one with you," he said and kissed me. Then he seemed to be thinking. "Is it still a pup if it's half human, half witch and werewolf?" he asked. I smiled at him. I loved him more than life itself.
"It is," I decided. "And I think it would be nice if we timed it with Bo and Lizzy so they could have each other to play with."
"I'm not going to schedule sexy time so we do it at the same time," Nash objected, and I laughed and poked him in the side.
"You are such an idiot sometimes," I told him.
"But you love me?"
"Always and ever," I promised.
"I love you too." We collected the pups, who looked almost down for the count after a day full of playing and then finishing it off with dancing. We waved goodbye to the chaneques and walked back to the pack house.
It was night time, and I stood at the window in our apartment and looked out over the desert. The starry sky looked amazing, and the small village reminded me of what we could do as long as we worked together. Nash wrapped his arms around me from behind.
"What are you thinking?" he asked and kissed my mate mark. A shiver ran down my spine, as it always did when he kissed the mark he left on me.
"I'm just absorbing how amazing my life is. We've come such a long way in a year, even more so if I think back eighteen months," I told him. He hummed.
"When we stand here next year, the village will have grown even more. We have five applications to build homes here and two new businesses planned," he told me. "And one of the empty rooms in our apartment will have someone living in it. A little mini-kitten," he added, making me smile.
"Or a mini-wolf," I said. He chuckled.
"You'll never let me forget my road name, will you?" he asked.
"Never," I agreed. He had chosen to use his real name when he became Alpha, but it was just too good an opportunity to tease him. "When you introduced yourself to me that first day, I nearly died holding back my laughter," I told him.
"So you've said, many times," he pointed out.
"It'll be one of my favourite stories to tell our pups," I said.
"Honestly," he huffed.
"We'll have an amazing life," I told him.
"We will," he agreed.
