Chapter 186
Chapter 186
Still the familiar room, the person hadn't changed either. Eugenie had barely sat down when Kenna entered dejectedly.
Looking at Kenna's expression, she didn't seem to be doing well. Eugenie waited for her to sit down, this time not taking the initiative to speak.
Kenna hesitated for a long time but didn't dare look up. "What you said before—does it still count?"
It seemed Kenna had made a decision. Eugenie thought for a moment and asked back, "It counts. But what made you change your mind? I thought you'd firmly choose your family."
Kenna gave a bitter smile, her eyes moist as she looked up. "I did think that at first, but all these days I've been waiting for news from them. All I got was disappointment."
Eugenie didn't speak. She'd heard that initially Ewan had indeed wanted to do something for Kenna, but when he found he couldn't contact her, he didn't even hire a lawyer in the end.
Eugenie was certain Nicholas hadn't gone out of his way to create obstacles—at most he'd just prevented the two sides from meeting. He absolutely wouldn't interfere with anything else. That was all. She hadn't expected Ewan to give up on Kenna so easily. She'd really overthought it.
"So you've thought it through now and decided to stand on my side?" Eugenie placed one hand on the table and leaned forward, squinting with scrutiny, her oppressive presence strong. "I can't accept betrayal. You'd better think it through."
"If you use me to achieve your goal, the consequences will be severe." In case she didn't believe it, Eugenie solemnly added another sentence.
Kenna lowered her head sadly and nodded very slightly. "I've thought it through. As long as I can get out, I'll do anything."
She'd only applied a bit of pressure, but unexpectedly neither side could withstand the test. Everyone was thinking from their own interests. In a sense, there was nothing wrong with that—after all, people are selfish.
Confirming she was serious, Eugenie composed herself. "Since you've decided, I don't need to tell you what to do, right?"
"I know," Kenna answered quietly. Having achieved her purpose, Eugenie stood up to leave.
Just as she was about to reach the door, she heard Kenna's hesitant voice. "You said you'd leave my share of the stocks to me. You weren't lying, were you?"
She was quite cautious. Eugenie turned around and generously gestured openly. "You see, I came to see you, but I didn't bring anything, including that transfer document. So do you still have any questions?"
Kenna scanned her up and down. Eugenie's hands were indeed empty. Her body relaxed as she leaned back in the chair, awkwardly squeezing out a "thank you."
Eugenie almost thought she'd heard wrong. Seeing her awkward expression, she felt an indescribable complexity. "No need to thank me. I told you before, this is compensation for you. After all, this time you're prepared to turn against your family."
Looking at this half-sister before her, Eugenie felt not a trace of pity. After all, growing up, this person had never given her a kind look. The rare times she was pleasant, it was mixed with schemes.
She turned around expressionlessly, leaving behind a cool remark. "You don't need to overthink this decision. We're each getting what we need. As for what you did to me in the past, I never thought about forgiving you. There's no need to meet again in the future."
Having said that, she opened the door without hesitation and went out. Yvaine had been waiting at the door early.
Yvaine had no interest in knowing about their conversation, so she hadn't entered the adjacent room. From beginning to end, she was only concerned about Eugenie alone. "Is everything resolved?"
Eugenie nodded and stepped forward to link arms with her. "You could say that. She's agreed for now. What happens next depends on how much she confesses and who she implicates."
Yvaine looked at her with heartache and proactively reached out to hug her. "My heart aches for the you who was helpless before. But now it's good—you've personally ended that dark period of the past."
Yvaine's words touched her heart. Eugenie hugged her back. "Thank you for always being with me."
"Between us, don't say such sentimental things. In the future, if you and Nicholas have a child, just remember to make me the godmother." Yvaine teased with a grin, proactively changing the subject.
The topic changed so abruptly—Yvaine had jumped straight to urging Eugenie to have children. She reached out to pinch the soft flesh at Yvaine's waist, quite embarrassed. "What are you talking about? Nothing's settled yet and you're already pushing?"
"I'm giving you two progress updates from an observer's perspective. I think you have a great chance of ending up together." Yvaine spoke mysteriously. Eugenie, made embarrassed by her words, kept pinching her soft flesh. "What's with this fortune-teller act? Reserving the head table in advance?"
Yvaine was ticklish and dodged Eugenie's attack, running forward quickly, causing Eugenie to have to chase after her.
Yvaine made a face, triumphantly saying, "With our many years of friendship, I should at least get the head table, right?"
The police station lobby had people coming and going. Yvaine deliberately said it so loudly that quite a few people looked over. Eugenie chased after her to cover her mouth. But somehow she was bumped by someone, her steps moving uncontrollably to the side, finally falling into a warm embrace.
"Sorry." Eugenie instinctively apologized. Looking up to see who it was, her movements became somewhat stiff.
"You okay?" Nicholas steadied her, his hand on her shoulder silently asserting ownership to the onlooking males around them, his eyes full of concern as he looked at her.
Eugenie's hand supported his arm, her palm against his firm muscles. Her mind couldn't help but recall a question Yvaine had asked her during a previous phone call.
It did feel pretty good. His physique probably wasn't bad either.
Seeing Eugenie spacing out right in front of him, Nicholas waved his hand before her. "What are you thinking about? Am I not attractive to you?"
Yvaine appeared from somewhere, looking at her best friend's flushed cheeks with a mischievous smile. "It's hard to say she's not thinking of something shameful."
Eugenie snapped back to reality hearing this and stepped forward to cover her mouth. "You talk too much."
She turned to look at Nicholas beside her, somewhat puzzled. "Didn't I leave you a note? How did you end up here?"
He steadied himself, the smile in his eyes deepening. "There wasn't much going on at the company, so I came to find you. How did things go on your end?"
"It went fairly smoothly. It still depends on what she does." About the Medici family's troublesome matters, Eugenie really didn't want to say more.
Now that the weight on her heart had lifted, her mood was naturally excellent. With both her friend and the person who made her heart flutter present, and with nightfall approaching and dinnertime at hand.
She proactively suggested, "It's rare to have everyone together. Why don't we have dinner?"
Yvaine glanced at Nicholas beside them, sensing Eugenie's thoughts, feeling somewhat excited.
Yvaine patted the back of her hand. As soon as she let go, she actively responded, "I think that's a great idea."
Nicholas naturally wouldn't refuse. "Sounds good."
Eugenie made the final call. "Then what are we waiting for? Let's go."
