Chapter 182
Chapter 182
Eugenie stepped out of the car at the police station entrance. Just as she was about to head inside, her phone rang. Seeing Ewan’s name flash across the screen, she reached out and pulled on Nicholas’s, who was about to go in with her. “Wait for me. I need to take this call.”
She walked aside to answer. Ewan's compromising voice came through. "If I add the shares I hold, is that sincere enough?"
"Just barely passing grade. Better than nothing." Eugenie showed no surprise, her tone matter-of-fact.
Her indifference nearly made Ewan choke with anger. Seeing hope, he took the opportunity to set conditions. "Then hurry and bring Kenna home. I've prepared the agreement and am waiting for you at home."
Truly a cunning old fox, wanting to get something for nothing. Eugenie didn't think they'd be that honest.
She wasn't easily fooled either. "I'm at the police station entrance. I'll give you one hour to prepare the equity transfer agreement and bring it here. If you’re late, the deal is off.”
Ewan wasn't flustered at all, obviously anticipated this. "Kenna hasn't come home—how can she sign her portion? You're deliberately making things difficult, aren't you?"
If she wanted to, the situation wouldn't be like this now. Eugenie didn't waste words. "Bring her portion. After I complete my statement, I'll go find her. I have my ways to make her sign."
Ewan hung up in anger. Eugenie remained unhurried, signaling Nicholas to go back to the car to wait out Ewan's hour.
As long as Bianca hadn't given up on marrying Kenna to a good family, Eugenie was confident they would obediently compromise.
Even if they didn't come after an hour, she had a backup plan prepared. In any case, she would never allow them to regain control at the decision-making level.
"They agreed?" Nicholas unscrewed a bottle of water and handed it over.
Eugenie took it, drank a few sips, and shook her head. "Don't know. He hung up in anger. Still not sure if it'll work."
"How long should we wait?" Nicholas asked casually.
"One hour." She answered just as casually.
As the hour was about to end, Ewan's assistant appeared at the police station. Eugenie leaned across Nicholas and tapped the steering wheel. The car horn attracted the assistant's attention.
He ran over without time to wipe his sweat. Eugenie lowered the passenger window. "Did you bring the documents?"
The assistant took out a folder from his bag and extracted a sealed document envelope, respectfully handing it to Eugenie through the car door.
She untied the string and opened it. Inside were three documents. She removed them one by one, scanning each clause with meticulous precision, being as careful and cautious as possible.
The assistant beside her broke out in cold sweat—after all, if something went wrong, he was the one who'd run the errand.
Eugenie carefully checked for any hidden clauses. Turning to the end, two of them already had those two people's signatures.
"Alright, you can go back and report."
After dismissing the assistant, Eugenie took up a pen to sign them. Nicholas got out with an umbrella to escort her inside to give her statement.
After completing her statement, Eugenie requested to see Kenna. The request was initially denied. However, upon learning that the interrogation had yielded no progress, Eugenie took the initiative. "I'm her nominal sister. Give me a chance—perhaps I can talk some sense into her."
Nicholas listened from beside her and laughed, stepping forward to poke her shoulder. "You'd be this kind-hearted?"
"Of course not. I'm going to sow discord." From the beginning, Eugenie had never planned to let this matter slide easily. Regardless of whether they ultimately showed sincerity or how far they'd go, after completing the statement she intended to see Kenna.
Under police arrangement, Eugenie wasled into a spacious room. Moments later, Kenna was brought in from the detention center.
When she entered, Kenna's haggard appearance made Eugenie almost not recognize her—completely unlike her usual arrogant manner. Apparently, her days in detention hadn't been easy.
"Why is it you?" Seeing the visitor was Eugenie, Kenna didn't appear very happy, rather unwelcoming.
Eugenie didn't mind at all. Once the police closed the door and only the two of them remained in the room, she proactively spoke. "Stop waiting. I'm the only one who came. Want to chat?"
"What do I have to chat with you about?" Kenna was very disdainful. At this moment she still felt she had a chance to leave this place, but soon she couldn't laugh anymore.
"If they were really this worried about you, how could I be the first to find you? Seeing me here, don't you understand?"
The words hit their mark. Kenna’s expression stiffened. Quite temperamental, she stepped forward, pulled out a chair and sat down. "So you came to laugh at me?"
Eugenie extended a finger and shook it, lightly tapping the document envelope beside her. "I didn't come to laugh at you. I came to make a deal with you."
Kenna didn't believe she'd be this kind-hearted at all. "Between us, what deal could there be to discuss?"
"I heard from the police that when they came to the door yesterday, you initially refused to open it. You should be the one temporarily pushed out as a scapegoat, right?" Eugenie stated her speculation. Kenna rarely fell silent, not answering her question. The prolonged silence instead confirmed her guess.
"Truth be told, they do want me to tell a little lie and bring you out first. I agreed, but with conditions."
Kenna's expression gradually transitioned from wavering to ultimate wariness. "I don't believe you'd be this kind-hearted. Why not tell me what conditions you proposed?"
"It wasn't conditions I proposed—it was sincerity they proactively offered. Honestly, I was very tempted, but before that, I wanted to talk with you first."
Eugenie's calm and composed manner left Kenna somewhat unable to read her, forcing her to be cautious. "What do you want to discuss with me?"
"If you don't proactively confess the truth and expose the mastermind, what awaits you is several years of prison. After release, wanting to marry a good man will probably be very difficult. I'm sure you know this in your heart." Eugenie unhurriedly stated the facts. Kenna's face gradually darkened. With a gloomy expression, she asked back, "So what?"
"So they proposed using the shares in their hands in exchange for me changing my statement and bringing you out. The contracts are already signed. Now they're completely counting on you to marry a rich man and bring them a good life."
Eugenie wasn't afraid to tell her the truth. Seeing her hint of happiness, she immediately changed tack. "But I don't want to let them have their way. Might as well tell you—I've already completed my statement. The truth, the whole truth, without a single lie."
Kenna's face fell, her expression becoming very ugly. "Aren't you afraid of what they'll do to you when they find out?"
Eugenie had of course thought about it, but she was no longer the timid person she once was. Now her courage was quite substantial.
Precisely because she understood this too clearly, that's why she came to find Kenna.
She didn't expect Kenna to turn against them—she only needed to plant a thorn in her heart.
"Not afraid. I've already gotten what I wanted. As for that bit of shares in your hands, I don't care about it, but for you it's different." Eugenie lowered her voice, her tone hiding a bewitching temptation, bit by bit luring her into her trap. "A you who's been in prison, without shares to rely on—in this circle, what value do you think you still have?"
