22- Monotony
Monotony. Same day. No change in the world. World II.
"Faven, have you ever had that feeling that you have memories of things that didn't happen, and then they start repeating in reality?"
"Wow, that's very specific," she says, and proceeds to laugh. "What can I tell you? Sometimes the mind is capable of sensing events due to the patterns that surround it. Why are you asking me this?"
"Do you know about this politician, Rod Hart?"
"I have no idea, Eron. I share your rejection of politicians."
I start telling them about the incident from the afternoon. Theo and Rompedor also listen, because they're both nosy as hell. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they're communicators?
"My sister's boyfriend was looking into that. But honestly, I thought he was crazy."
"Chad? But isn't he a physics teacher? What's the connection?" I dare to ask.
"Oh, well. I didn't think that his theory could be true," she starts laughing. "Have you heard of the threads that connect parallel worlds? There are many curious legends. Chad believes that every time you faint, you travel to another reality, or something like that. How could he think of that?"
Everyone at the table, except for me, starts bursting with laughter. Then, I furrow my brows. Maybe Chad is right? Nah, it sounds crazy. This isn't a novel or something.
"Oh, wow. I don't see you as skeptical," Faven wipes away one of the tears that fell from laughter. "I don't really know much about the topic, but I can arrange a meeting with him if you think it can make sense to you."
After that episode, the night goes on as it always has between us. We order burgers and talk about the things that interest us. We joke around, just like in those college days. We laugh about the things that happen to us at work and talk about our expectations for the basketball season. Well, I do. The others just listen to me talk and talk about the results I expect for the first week.
When I get into my car to drive home, I can't stop thinking about that strange matter Faven told me about alternate worlds. I really think it's nonsense, but I don't want to dismiss anything without being sure about it. The doctors still don't know why I faint so much, and these days I've been unconscious for a long time. It's not normal. Plus, it has caused problems for me to organize my time. I almost lost my job when I started. I was "lucky" to lose consciousness in front of my boss. That was the only way he would believe me.
I smile when I enter the house and see that Dakota prepared a bowl of popcorn and poured two glasses of dark soda. She also has the streaming platform open, searching for anything among the many titles. I can deduce that she's waiting for me to start.
"Tomorrow the weekend starts and you're off work. Shall we have a series night together? We haven't done that in a long time," she suggests.
"Let me take a quick shower, and I'll join you."
She nods and blows me a kiss.
"I'll be waiting then."
Sometimes I feel so comfortable with the life I have that I get too used to these things happening. Everything is just "fine". Except for my fainting problems, I feel that things are calm and peaceful. Is it normal to never have storms?
I don't know. Maybe that would add some excitement to everything. I think.
After getting out of the shower, drying my hair, and combing it, I look for a notebook to write down the matter with Chad. Maybe that's what will take me out of some shades of monotony. I have to admit, I did get a little excited about Rod Hart.
I try to do different things, but maybe I'm easily bored.
I return to the living room and find Dakota about to fall asleep. I know the effort she's making because, unlike me, her shift just ended an hour ago. She doesn't have to open tomorrow, and even though she's dead tired, I can see that she wants to rest and spend that time with me.
"We can watch a Stand Up. Maybe that'll keep you awake," I suggest, kissing her cheek. "Or we can start watching a movie and see how long you can stay awake."
She stretches and yawns. When I sit down, she snuggles up against my chest and hands me the remote control.
"Put on the last movie in the history. I've been wanting to watch it for a while."
I grab the folded blanket next to us and cover ourselves with it. Once again, that strange sense of déjà vu takes over me. And, I could swear, even though I'm sure there's no one outside, that someone is watching us.
Faven once told me that it could be a delusion of persecution, but I don't know what to think at this point in life.
As expected, Dakota falls asleep before the halfway point of the movie. She didn't even touch the popcorn she made. She breathes deeply, and I feel unable to interrupt her sleep to continue watching the movie.
I prefer to pause the playback and get more comfortable on the couch. I don't consider myself strong enough at the moment to carry her to our bedroom, but we can sleep for a while on the couch. It's not an orthopedic couch, but it's not uncomfortable either.
I don't drink the sodas to avoid them interrupting my sleep. I turn off the lights, put the glasses in the fridge, and the popcorn in a plastic bag. I don't eat either. Honestly, I'm full from all the food I had with my friends.
Instead, I let myself be carried away by the arms of Morpheus and forget about the things that occupy my mind these days. I want to do like Dakota, and just let myself go and rest.
