Chapter 58 Chapter 58
Max's POV
I watched Violet work from across the room, her hands moving precisely as she mixed ingredients for the revelation potion.
She'd been at it for hours, ever since we got back from Celeste's cottage. The starfall essence sat in a small vial beside her, glowing faintly in the dim light.
She was beautiful when she was focused like this. Her blue hair fell forward, partially hiding her face. Her expression was intense, determined.
Everything about her drew me in.
And everything about her pushed me away.
"You're staring again," she said without looking up.
I smiled. "Can't help it."
"Try harder."
"Why would I do that?" I pushed off from the wall and moved closer. "You're my mate. I'm allowed to look at you."
"I'm not your mate," she said automatically, but there was less conviction in her voice than before.
Progress.
"Keep telling yourself that," I said, leaning against her workbench. "Maybe one day you'll actually believe it."
She finally looked up, her eyes meeting mine. "Max."
"Violet."
We stared at each other for a moment. The air between us felt charged, heavy with everything unsaid.
Then she sighed and returned to her work. "Don't you have something else to do? Someone else to bother?"
"Nope." I crossed my arms. "I'm exactly where I want to be."
"You're impossible."
"So I've been told."
She added a pinch of silver powder to the mixture, and it turned a deep purple. "The potion will be ready by tomorrow morning. Then we just need to figure out how to get Lila to drink it."
"Sophia said she has a plan," I reminded her.
"She still hasn't told us what it is." Violet frowned. "I don't like going into something blind."
"She'll tell us when she's ready."
"And if her plan doesn't work? If Lila doesn't show up at the exhibition?"
"Then we'll come up with something else." I reached out and gently tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "We'll figure it out. Together."
She didn't pull away from my touch, which felt like a small victory.
"You keep saying that word," she murmured. "Together."
"Because it's true." I let my hand linger near her face for a moment before dropping it. "Whether you accept the bond or not, we're in this together. You, me, Ethan, Sophia. We're a team."
"I'm not used to teams."
"I know." I studied her face, seeing the vulnerability she tried so hard to hide. "You're used to being alone. Used to handling everything yourself. But you don't have to anymore."
"It's not that simple."
"Why not?"
She was quiet for a long moment, her hands stilling over the potion. "Because trusting people, letting them in, it makes you vulnerable. And vulnerable people get hurt."
"Sometimes," I agreed. "But they also get loved. Protected. Supported. All the things you deserve, Violet."
She looked at me then, really looked at me. "You don't know me well enough to say what I deserve."
"Then let me get to know you." I moved closer. "Stop pushing me away and let me in."
"Max..."
"I'm not asking you to accept the bond right now," I said softly. "I'm just asking you to give me a chance. Give us a chance."
She opened her mouth to respond, but a knock on the door interrupted us.
"Come in," Violet called, stepping back from me.
Ethan entered, followed by Sophia. They both looked serious.
"We need to talk," Ethan said. "About the exhibition. About the plan."
"Finally," Violet muttered.
We all gathered around the workbench as Sophia took a breath.
"I know I've been secretive about my plan," she started. "But I needed to work out all the details first. Make sure it would actually work."
"And?" I prompted.
"And I think it will." She looked at each of us in turn. "But it requires everyone to play their part perfectly."
"We're listening," Violet said.
Sophia glanced at Ethan, who nodded encouragingly. Then she began to explain.
"Marcus thinks I invited him because I want reconciliation. He thinks with Lila dead, he has a chance to win me back."
"Delusional," I muttered.
"Exactly," Sophia agreed. "But his delusion is what makes this work. He'll be there, trying to impress me, trying to look like the strong Alpha he used to be."
"And Lila?" Violet asked.
"If she's alive, if she's planning to come back, the exhibition is the perfect opportunity." Sophia's voice was steady. "It's a public event with all the regional Alphas present. Security will be tight, but there will be crowds. Chaos. Easy to blend in."
"You think she'll try something," I said.
"I know she will." Sophia looked at me. "Lila's whole mission was to kill me. She won't stop just because she faked her death. She'll come back, probably with a new face, a new identity. And she'll try again."
"So we set a trap," Ethan said. "We make the exhibition the perfect stage for her to attempt something. And when she does, we'll be ready."
"With the revelation potion," Violet added, understanding dawning on her face.
"Exactly." Sophia smiled slightly. "We'll have servers circulating with drinks. One of those drinks will be laced with the potion. And we'll make sure it gets to Lila."
"But we don't know what she looks like now," I pointed out. "If she's transformed, how will we know which guest is her?"
"That's where Marcus comes in," Sophia said. "Lila will be watching him. She'll want to see if he's moved on, if he's trying to get back with me. Her jealousy, her need for revenge, it will draw her attention to him."
"And we'll be watching everyone who's watching Marcus," Ethan finished.
I had to admit, it was clever.
"There's one problem," Violet said. "The potion needs to be ingested willingly. If we force it down her throat, it won't work properly. The magic requires consent, even if that consent is unknowing."
"So we make her want to drink it," Sophia said. "We create a situation where refusing the drink would look suspicious. Where everyone around her is drinking, and she has to blend in."
"A toast," I suggested. "To Sophia's success. Everyone raises their glass. Everyone drinks."
"Perfect." Ethan nodded. "And we'll have guards positioned throughout the hall. The moment the potion reveals her true form, we close in."
"What about backup?" Violet asked. "Celeste said Lila might have support from her coven."
"We'll have our own backup," Ethan said. "Every warrior in Wolfalpine Pack will be on alert. Plus, I've contacted some allied Alphas. They'll have their guards ready too."
"And if this goes wrong?" I asked. "If Lila doesn't show, or if she figures out the trap?"
"Then we adapt," Sophia said firmly. "But I don't think she will. Lila's arrogant. She thinks she's smarter than everyone else. She won't expect us to be ready for her."
We all stood there for a moment, letting the plan sink in.
It was risky. Complicated. A lot could go wrong.
But it was also the best chance we had.
"I'll have the potion ready," Violet said. "Just tell me which drinks to lace."
"The champagne," Sophia decided. "For the toast. We'll make sure servers offer it to everyone, including any suspicious guests."
"And Marcus?" I asked. "Does he know about any of this?"
"No," Sophia said. "He thinks he's coming to win me back. Let him think that. His presence will be the distraction we need."
"He's going to be furious when he realizes you used him," I pointed out.
"I don't care," Sophia said coldly. "After everything he put me through, he deserves it."
Fair enough.
"Alright," Ethan said. "We have two days until the exhibition. Violet finishes the potion. Sophia finalizes the guest list and seating arrangements. Max and I will coordinate security and brief the guards."
"What about me?" Violet asked. "After I finish the potion, what do you need me to do?"
"Be ready," Ethan said. "If Lila has magical backup, you're our best defense against it."
She nodded.
"Everyone clear on their roles?" Ethan looked around at each of us.
We all nodded.
"Good." He took Sophia's hand. "Then let's make this count. Let's end this threat once and for all."
They left together, already discussing security details.
Violet returned to her potion, but I noticed her hands were shaking slightly.
"Hey," I said softly, moving to stand beside her. "You okay?"
"I'm fine."
"Violet."
She set down the vial she was holding and looked at me. "What if it doesn't work? What if the potion fails, or Lila doesn't drink it, or something goes wrong?"
"Then we deal with it," I said. "But you can't think like that. You have to trust in your abilities. Trust in the potion you're making."
"I do trust my abilities," she said. "It's everything else I'm worried about."
I understood that feeling. The weight of responsibility. The fear of failing when people were counting on you.
"We're going to protect Sophia," I said firmly. "All of us, together. And you're a big part of that. Your magic, your knowledge, your strength. We need you, Violet."
"I need you too," she said quietly.
My heart stuttered. "What?"
She looked away, her cheeks flushing slightly. "I mean, we all need each other. For this plan to work."
"Right," I said, even though I knew that wasn't what she'd meant. "Of course."
But something had shifted. Some wall she'd built around herself had cracked, just a little.
And I was going to make sure it kept cracking until it came down completely.
"Get some rest," I told her. "You've been working for hours. The potion can wait until tomorrow."
"I'm almost done."
"Violet."
She sighed but nodded. "Fine. But I'm finishing this last part first."
"Deal."
I watched as she completed the mixture, her movements precise and practiced. When she finally sealed the vial and set it aside, I saw the exhaustion in her face.
"Come on," I said, offering my hand. "I'll walk you to your room."
She hesitated, then took my hand.
Her skin was soft against mine. Warm.
The mate bond hummed between us, stronger than ever.
We walked through the quiet palace corridors in comfortable silence. When we reached her door, she turned to face me.
"Thank you," she said. "For today. For coming with me to see Celeste. For helping with all of this."
"You don't have to thank me," I said. "I told you, we're in this together."
She studied my face for a long moment. Then, before I could process what was happening, she leaned up and pressed a soft kiss to my cheek.
"Goodnight, Max," she whispered.
Then she slipped into her room and closed the door.
I stood there, my hand reaching up to touch where her lips had been.
Progress. Definite progress.
I smiled and headed to my own room, already looking forward to tomorrow.
To working with Violet. To protecting Sophia. To finally ending this threat from Lila.
And maybe, just maybe, to breaking down the last of Violet's walls.
Two days until the exhibition.
Two days until everything came to a head.
I just hoped we were ready for whatever Lila had planned.
