Laila’s POV

I stood frozen in the doorway, my heart pounding so loudly I was sure Nolan could hear it. The weight of the moment pressed down on me, but I wasn’t sure if I could process what had just happened. For weeks, I had been caught in a web of deceit, one where my identity was being stolen, my name sullied, and my future threatened. But in this moment, I was more confused than ever.

Mara stood before me, her real face exposed, and I couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of disbelief. How had I missed it? Was I so blinded by everything else that I hadn’t seen the truth? The woman I had thought was my enemy, the one who had been plotting against me with Hamilton, wasn’t the person I had imagined her to be. The person in front of me wasn’t her. But then who was it? Was the woman I had seen with Hamilton a mere puppet, a hired actor? The possibility gnawed at me, making my stomach churn with dread. They were playing a deeper game than I could have ever anticipated.

I took a step back, my mind racing to piece the puzzle together. But before I could utter a word, Mara’s voice sliced through the air like a blade, her anger evident in every word she spoke. “Lila, come out now and explain yourself! Why are you impersonating someone else? Why are you trying to steal someone else’s life?”

I flinched at the venom in her tone, but I refused to let her see my fear. I straightened up, putting on the strongest front I could muster. I wasn’t going to let her manipulate me any longer. She had come here to tear me down, but I wasn’t going to give her that satisfaction.

Nolan, however, was already in action, moving swiftly to place himself between Mara and me. His stance was firm, protective, and there was an undeniable fire in his eyes. I had never seen him so resolute, so willing to stand against Mara. He wasn’t going to let her get away with this.

“Don’t you dare touch her,” Nolan said, his voice low and dangerous, a promise of consequences in his words. “If you do, you will regret it. You won’t even know what hit you.”

Mara’s fury was almost tangible, but Nolan didn’t flinch. He didn’t back down. He stood tall and unyielding, not an ounce of fear in his expression. Her words had no effect on him, and that gave me a strange sense of reassurance.

“Why are you helping her?” Mara demanded, her voice rising in pitch as she glared at Nolan. “She’s impersonating the woman you want to marry, and you’re just standing there, helping her!”

Nolan’s gaze remained steady, unwavering. He didn’t let Mara’s words shake him. “You don’t get to tell me who she is, and I don’t care if she’s impersonating anyone,” he said, his tone growing colder with every word. “You came to my apartment, remember? And now you’re going to behave yourself because this isn’t your house. I have every right to ask you to leave, and if you don’t, I’ll make sure you regret it.”

Mara was taken aback by his words, but she didn’t back down either. Her eyes flashed with defiance as she crossed her arms over her chest. She wasn’t used to being spoken to like this, and it clearly irritated her. She scoffed, shaking her head as though the idea of Nolan standing against her was absurd. “You have no idea what she’s capable of. You have no idea who you’re dealing with,” she sneered. “She’s not the person you think she is. She’s here to ruin everything. To take everything from you.”

Nolan’s eyes never wavered. “I don’t need your protection, Mara. I don’t need your help. You need to leave now, or I’ll call the police.”

Mara’s face contorted with rage. “You think I’m scared of you?” she hissed. “You think you can just push me around? I’ll have you know that I’m free now. The Martin’s Group dropped the charges against me. I’m no longer guilty. I’m free, and you can’t do anything to stop me.”

The words hit me like a slap in the face. I had heard rumors, whispers of her release, but I hadn’t known it was true. How could they do that? How could they just let her go? The thought of Mara roaming free, plotting more damage, made my blood run cold. But there was something in her eyes, something in the way she spoke that didn’t sit right with me. She was hiding something. I knew it.

Nolan was seething. “So, you were released because Mr. Williams facilitated it? And what about the Martin’s Group? They dropped the charges? I thought you were supposed to serve time for your crimes. How convenient for you that all your wrongdoings are erased just like that. But you’re not fooling me. Not anymore.”

Mara’s smirk faltered for just a moment, but it quickly returned, a mask she wore to hide her insecurity. “I don’t have to explain myself to you,” she said, her voice tight with suppressed anger. “But you’re wrong. You have no idea what I’m capable of. If you think this is the end of it, you’re mistaken.”

Nolan took a step closer to her, his expression hardening. “You should be careful, Mara. Inciting a brawl like this could land you in jail again. So if you want to keep pushing, go ahead. But I’m warning you now, I’ll make sure you regret it.”

I stood there, still trying to process everything that had happened. The twists were coming too fast for me to keep up. Mara was free, but why? And why had she come here, bringing those men with her? And then there was Nolan, standing by my side, defending me, protecting me from the woman who had been trying to ruin my life. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this was no coincidence. This was a game, one where Mara was trying to trap me once again. But this time, I wasn’t going to fall into her hands.

I turned to Nolan, my eyes searching his face for any sign of doubt, any sign that he might be swayed by Mara’s words. But there was none. His face was set in determination, and I felt a rush of gratitude. He had stood up for me when I couldn’t do it myself. He had seen through Mara’s lies and manipulations, and for the first time in a long while, I felt like I had someone on my side.

“We need to act fast,” I said, my voice steady despite the chaos swirling around us. “If we don’t find the evidence soon, they’ll use this against me. They’ll claim I’m the imposter, and it will be too late to prove otherwise.”

Nolan nodded, his expression serious. “I know. We’ll find it. We’ll expose them for who they really are.”

As Mara and her men turned to leave, the tension in the air was palpable. I felt the weight of the moment settle in my chest. This wasn’t over. It was just beginning.

But for the first time in weeks, I felt like I had a fighting chance.
