Chapter 47
Chapter 47
Storm and Shadows
Rain hit my face. Hard and cold. Stuck me like needles. Caleb’s little arms held me. His head pressed into my shoulder. “Mommy?” he whispered. Tiny. Shaky. I shivered. Not just cold. Scared. Everything scary.
The street empty. Only us. Water running everywhere. My jacket wet. Shoes squishy with mud. Legs hurt. Lungs burning from running. I hugged Caleb tighter. Couldn’t let go. Never.
Lightning flashed. Street lit up. Shadows moved fast. Trees. Poles. Streetlights. Blink. Heart racing. Every sound big. Car far away. Horn loud. Jumped. Caleb whined.
“Shhh, baby. It’s okay,” I said. Voice shaky. Tried to sound strong. Arms sore. Back hurting. Chest heavy. Water dripping on my face. My shoes squished, squished, squished.
We ran more. Legs stiff. Arms tired. Eyes watching. Listening. Every noise made stomach flip. Shadows alive. I wanted to scream. Couldn’t. Not yet.
Caleb sniffled. I kissed his head. “It’s okay. We’re okay. I got you.” Words small. Voice almost lost in rain. He held me tight. Tiny fingers clinging. I squeezed back. Hard.
Rain soaked through clothes. Cold. Heavy. Water dripping everywhere. Hair in eyes. Stuck. I wiped it with sleeve. Hands shaking. Not just cold. Fear. Heart racing. Couldn’t stop. Couldn’t. Not until safe.
A shadow moved. Maybe a tree. Maybe not. I froze. Caleb pressed into me. “Mommy?” tiny voice. I held tighter. Heart pounding so loud. I thought someone could hear it.
Then car stopped ahead. Black. Windows dark. Engine silent. Someone there? Maybe. Maybe not. Didn’t wait. Pulled Caleb into alley. Mud squish, squish under shoes. Wall dripping wet. Chest hurting.
Leaning on wall. Caleb pressed to me. Shivering. “It’s okay. We’re safe.” Tried to believe. Stomach twisted. Legs aching. Hands red and numb. Still moved. Step by step.
Rain slowed. Just little now. Puddles everywhere. Slipped a bit. Caleb cried. Held him tighter. “Sorry, baby. Mommy clumsy. Don’t worry. I got you.” Teeth chattering. Voice broken. But kept going.
Reached small park. Empty. Dark. Wet. Only puddles and swings. Pressed Caleb to chest. Breathing fast. Trying to dry him. Trying to remember alive. Still breathing. Still together.
Lightning again. Dark clouds. Storm not done. Caleb’s fingers dug into mine. Tiny. Strong. Hugged him tight. “We okay. Won’t let anything happen.” Whispered like prayer. Promise.
Saw light. Across park. House. Porch on. Warm maybe. Safe maybe. Didn’t care if trap. Ran. Caleb squeaked. Whispered, “Almost there. Just little more.”
Reached porch. Shoes squishy. Knocked. Hard. Hands shaking. Caleb pressed to me. “Mommy?” whispered. Hugged him. “Almost there. Don’t worry. I got you.”
Door opened. Warm light. Woman surprised. “Oh! You’re wet! Come! Come!” Reached hand. Hesitated. Caleb held tight. Nodded. Step inside. Warm. Safe. For now.
Let go for second. Caleb touched floor. Mud everywhere. Tried shaking off rain. Wet clothes. Cold. Felt better little bit. Hands trembling. Heart racing. Alive. Together. That mattered.
Caleb held my hand. I kissed head. “See? Mommy got you. Safe.” Eyes wide. Shiny. Scared. Trusting. Heart broke and healed same time.
Looked around. Small. Cozy. Smell bread. Soup? Warm light. Sighed. Relief little. Not fully. Danger out there. Shadows chasing. But could rest now. Maybe eat. Maybe breathe.
Woman pointed towel. “Dry. Sit. Shaking.” Nodded. Caleb sat. Wrapped in it. Still trembling. Rubbed back. Whispered, “It’s okay. Got you. No one take you now.”
Outside, rain gone. Only puddles. Street wet. Night quiet. Too quiet. Pressed Caleb head to shoulder. Arms tired. Back aching. Heart still fast. Alive. Breathing. Safe. Together.
Looked window. Shadows moving. Trees? Wind? Didn’t think. Not yet. Not now. Just this moment. Small. Warm. Safe.
Caleb yawned. Tiny sound. He was Exhausted, he Smiled. His eyes were Tired. Legs stiff, Arms sore. Didn’t matter. He’s here, and I’m here too. Enough now.
Whispered, “Sleep, baby.” He curled. Closed his eyes, I hugged him tight. He’s hands red, and clothes wet. Heartbeat was fast, but we were Safe. For now.
I Sat with him. Rain still falling outside. Shadows moving. The Storm was gone now. Not forever. I knew there was Danger out there. Waiting. Watching. My eyes Closed for asecond. Felt warmth. Caleb breathing calm and steady, at least this was a little peace now.
Suddenly, there was a knock, I became Scared. Caleb jumped waking up from his sleep. Froze. My Heart was beating fast. It wasn’t safe. Not yet.
Whispered, “Shhh. Stay here. I got you.” Stood. Wet shoes squeak. Back sore. Arms tired. Peeked curtain.
Figures moved. Dark and Tall. Human maybe. Not human maybe. Didn’t wait. Grabbed Caleb. Tight. Whispered, “Not done. Not yet.”
Storm was gone. Night full of shadows. Waiting. Watching. Knew… this was only the beginning.
I could hear my own heartbeat. Loud. Too loud. My shoeswere sticky. Mud everywhere. Caleb pressed harder. Tiny fingers tight. My hands cold. My arms sore. Everything shaking. I didn’t care. Just him. Just us. We were alive. But not safe. Not yet.
We stepped inside. Warm hit me like a wall. Caleb pressed close. Mud dripping from shoes. I tried shaking it off. The Woman watching me. Quietly. She Didn’t speak.
“Sit,” she said. Voice soft. Shaking little. “You safe here.” I nodded. Couldn’t talk. Legs weak. Arms sore. Heart thumping still.
Caleb curled into my chest. Tiny little body trembling. I pressed him. “We okay. Mommy here.” Whispered fast. Shivering from cold. Shivering from fear.
The House was small and Cozy. It Smelled of bread or Soup maybe. Wood warm. Light soft. Felt nice. Strange. Safe maybe. Couldn’t relax. Not yet. Danger out there. Shadows still moving.
I let go a little. Caleb’s tiny hand held mine. I squeezed back. Warmth little. Could feel him trusting. His breathing slower now. Eyes half closed.
Woman moved. “Towel,” she said. Handed it over. I wrapped Caleb. Wet dripping everywhere. Clothes sticking. Hair plastered. Face cold. Hands shaking still.
I tried sitting. Chest heavy. Arms sore. Legs stiff. Caleb pressed close. Head on my shoulder. Tiny breathing. I said again, “Safe now. I got you. Always.”
She watched. Quiet. Didn’t ask much. Just offered chair. Warm drink maybe. I nodded. Took it. Spilled little. Didn’t care. Sipped fast. Hot. Felt good.
Caleb yawned again. Tiny sound. I smiled weak. Tired too. Body sore. Heart racing. Still fast. Couldn’t fully calm. Not yet. Not safe fully.
I looked around the house. It is a Small living room. Couch old. Rug wet from mud. Window open little. Rain stopped now. Puddles still outside. Street quiet. Too quiet.
I pressed Caleb tighter. Tiny hands held me. I held him close, I said in a slowly, “No one touch you. Mommy got you.” His breathing slow. Body small. Safe? Maybe.
Woman brought blanket. Wrapped Caleb. He snuggled. I kissed head. Felt little warmth. Relaxed tiny. Could breathe little. Heart still racing though.
I tried to stand. Legs stiff. Arms heavy. Caleb held on. Didn’t want let go. I whispered, “Almost there. Safe here. For now.”
Quiet house. It was Only us. Only little sounds. Clock ticking maybe. Rain dripping little. My own breathing loud. Heart thumping. Caleb stirring. Tiny whimper. Hugged tighter.
Looked outside. Street dark. Shadows moving still. Trees swaying. Wind soft. Danger maybe gone? Didn’t trust yet. Too long running. Too much chasing.
I rubbed Caleb back. Tiny hands curled in shirt. Whispered, “Sleep now. Mommy here. No one can get you.” His eyes closed little. Soothed.
Sat together. Arms sore. Back aching. Legs stiff. Heart still fast. Warmth from blanket. Tiny peace little. Couldn’t relax fully. Not safe yet.
Woman watched us quietly. My Hand was near her mouth. Her eyes looked worried. Didn’t ask much. Just let us be. I nodded thanks. Didn’t speak. Voice weak.
Caleb breathing slow. Tiny snores maybe. I kissed head. Pressed close. Could feel small heartbeat. I whispered again, “Safe here. Mommy got you.”
Time passed little. House quiet. Night outside. Street silent. Shadows moving. Still waiting maybe. Couldn’t relax fully. Heart racing tiny.
I let myself lean back. Couch soft. Arms around Caleb. Tiny warmth. Could breathe little. Eyes closed second. Not safe yet. Not forever. Danger still out there.
I whispered to dark, “We alive. Together. That enough now.” Caleb stirred. Tiny murmur. Pressed close again. Shivering little. I hugged tighter.
Outside wind moved. Leaves tapping window. Shadows shifting. Felt waiting. Watching. I didn’t care now. Just him. Just us. Safe little. For now.
