Chapter 30

Chapter 30
Darkness and Fire

The hospital was scary. So dark. Shadows were all over the walls. Red lights flashed. On. Off. On. Off.

Every beep from the machines was so loud it felt like a gun. My heart thumped in my chest. Hard. Fast. I thought it might break.

Maxwell was on the stretcher next to me. He looked so pale. Almost white. Blood was dried on his temple. Streaks on his shirt.

Caleb, my little boy, held me tight. His body shook.

I gritted my teeth. Focus. Keep going. Don’t let them catch us.

Then the speaker crackled. A voice. Adrian’s voice.

“Judith… always so stubborn. Always rushing in without thinking. I hoped you’d learn.”

I spun around. Looked everywhere. The voice came from the walls. The vents. Even the lights. Everywhere.

Cold ran down my back.

“Adrian Kael!” I shouted. “Come out! Show yourself!”

He laughed. Low. Mean.

“Patience, Judith. You’ll see me soon enough.”

I pressed my back to the wall. Held Caleb tight. Maxwell’s weak hand brushed mine. I had to keep them safe. Both of them.

I moved forward. Slowly. Dragging the stretcher. Quietly.

Every shadow seemed alive. Waiting. Watching.

Red lights flickered again. Then darkness. Almost total dark.

I reached for my phone. No signal. Nothing. Adrian cut it all. Every call. Every text. Gone.

I swallowed. He had planned this. Everything.

Then… a sound. A scuffle ahead.

Men in black jumped from the shadows. Mercenaries. Fast. Quiet. Strong. My heart jumped.

Think. Fight. Survive. I hissed. They moved like ghosts. Silent but deadly. One came at me so fast, I barely had time to breathe.

I grabbed a fire extinguisher from the wall. Swing. Foam sprayed everywhere. Hit the first man. He fell into the wall.

Caleb whimpered. Clung to me.

“Stay down, baby,” I whispered.

Another man ran at me. Swing. Foam covered him. He cursed and fell.

More. Always more.

I pushed the stretcher toward the exit. My heart pounded. My arms ached.

Maxwell groaned.

“Judith… stop…”

“No,” I snapped. “Not now. Not ever.”

We turned a corner. The hallway was narrow. Shadows moved like smoke.

Adrian’s voice was back. Closer. Almost behind me.

“You think you’re in control. You’re not. Never were.”

I froze. Caleb’s little hands grabbed my sleeve. His eyes were wide. My chest felt tight. Boots scraped closer. They were coming.

I shoved the stretcher into a small supply closet.

I pushed a metal cart against the door. Blocked it.

Caleb pressed close. Maxwell groaned. Blood on his lips.

I could not be scared. Not now.

The speaker buzzed. Adrian’s voice again. Soft. Almost gentle.

“Look at you, Judith. One mother. One woman. Surrounded by darkness. Alone. And yet… you keep fighting.”

I gritted my teeth.

“You think you can scare me? You’re weak.”

“Am I?” he whispered. “Or am I everything you fear? Caleb could be gone before you blink. Maxwell… do you know what he whispered to me before you arrived?”

Shivers ran through me. He always knew. Too much.

The closet door rattled. Metal bent.

Outside, the men were pushing. Planning. Breathing sharp. Short.

I grabbed a metal tray from the closet.

First fist hit the door. I swung. Sparks flew. Ducked. Held Caleb close. Maxwell’s hand brushed mine. Weak. But real.

A shadow appeared in the crack of light. Adrian. Tall. Terrible. Quiet.

“You’re insane,” I hissed.

“And yet… you still fight,” he said. Huge in the red glow. His men stayed in the shadows.

I held the tray tight. Caleb’s hands shook. He held mine. Maxwell groaned, trying to sit up.

Adrian tilted his head.

“Give me one reason… one tiny reason… why I shouldn’t take everything you love.”

I glared. Fury burned.

“Because you’re a coward hiding behind fear. And I will stop you. No matter what it takes.”

He laughed. Low. Cruel.

“We’ll see.”

He signaled. The hallway exploded. More men rushed at us. My heart jumped. We were trapped.

I had to act. Protect them. Fingers clenched on the tray. Every thought fast. Every move mattered. Every breath counted.

Adrian smiled. The red light caught the scar on his cheek.

“Judith Hunt… you think you’re ready. But the night is just beginning.”

He stepped back. Lights went out. Dark again. Machines beeped. Alarms screamed. Sirens howled.

Then… Caleb’s small voice:

“Mommy… I can see him.”

My stomach dropped. He was right. Behind us.

A hand slammed into the closet door. Metal twisted. Adrian laughed. Cold. Sharp.

“Hello, Judith. Game over.”

Then, the door burst open.

I grabbed Caleb and Maxwell as best I could. Sparks flew. Red light flashed on the walls. Men pushed inside.

I swung the tray, screaming. Caleb’s little fists hit me. I felt his tiny heartbeat. Maxwell tried to push a man. Weak. But trying.

Adrian stepped in last. Calm. Terrible.

“You fight hard. I’ll give you that. But this is the end.”

“No,” I whispered. “Not the end. Not for us.”

Chaos. Foam sprayed. Metal clashed. Screams. Alarms.

Caleb cried. “Mommy… mommy… I’m scared…”

I hugged him close. “I know, baby. I know. But we are not done. Not yet.”

Maxwell groaned. Pushed a man who tried to hit him. I swung the tray again. Sparks flew. Screams. The men paused. Surprised.

Adrian moved closer. Smiling. Enjoying it.

“Judith… Judith… you think you can win? You can’t. You’ll lose everyone. Nothing you can do.”

I gritted my teeth. Fire inside me.

“I said… NO!”

Caleb cried. Held my arm. Maxwell tried to speak, pain cut his words.

Adrian laughed. “So loud. So brave. And yet… still one woman. Against all of us.”

Fear hit me. But stronger was determination.

I couldn’t let them take my son. I couldn’t let them hurt Maxwell. I couldn’t fail. Not tonight.

I lunged. Tray swinging. Sparks flew. Men screamed. Foam everywhere. Caleb’s hands shook in mine, but I held him. Maxwell’s hand touched mine. Weak. Real.

Adrian stepped back. Watching. Smiling sharp.

I didn’t care. I would fight. Protect them. Fight the darkness.

The hallway was chaos. Red lights flickered. Alarms screamed. Shadows moved like fire.

We were alive. Fighting. Together.

And I knew, no matter what, I would not give up.

I tightened my grip on Caleb and Maxwell, feeling their small hearts against mine. Somewhere in the dark, Adrian’s laugh faded, but I knew he wasn’t gone. I whispered to myself, “We survive tonight… and we fight back tomorrow.
