Chapter 125: Targeted
Alan was a man of principle. Over the past few months, he had watched Sienna cause chaos and Damian drive his own wife to the edge. He knew that hiding the truth was a betrayal of his boss. But he also knew Damian’s current mental state. Between Damian’s obsessive possessiveness and Sienna’s ruthless ambition, a baby would only become a new victim in their war.
"You don’t need to be so tense," Alan said, looking away. He picked up the medical report, tore it into pieces in front of Evelyn, and tossed it into the trash. "I destroyed the backup. I’ve handled the original records, too."
Evelyn stared at him, stunned.
"That doesn’t mean I’ll hide this forever," Alan added, straightening his tie. His voice returned to a professional, detached tone. "Our priority is waiting for Mr. Green to wake up. As for the baby... I’ll decide when the time is right, but only when I’m sure you and the child are safe."
Evelyn’s heart didn't fully settle, but she nodded.
Just then, the elevator chimed. A sharp cry shattered the silence of the hallway.
"Aunt Octavina! How is Damian? I was so scared!"
Sienna ran out of the elevator, wearing a white dress that looked simple but was clearly carefully chosen. She threw herself into Octavina’s arms, sobbing.
"Where is she? Did that bitch do this to him?" Sienna wiped her tears against Octavina’s shoulder, but her eyes scanned the crowd. When she spotted Evelyn in the corner, her expression shifted from fake grief to pure malice.
While Octavina was busy talking to the doctors, Sienna dried her eyes and walked over to Alan.
"Alan," she whispered. "You’re a smart man."
Alan didn't look up from his tablet. "I don’t know what you’re talking about, Miss Marlow."
"Don't play dumb." Sienna stepped closer, her heavy perfume filling the air. "I saw you tear up that paper. You know that if Damian finds out certain things, it will only cause him trouble."
She tapped his chest with her finger, her eyes full of threats.
"Damian is still out, and the company is a mess. If any 'messy news' leaks and hits the stock price, you won't be able to handle the fallout. Some secrets are better left buried."
Alan adjusted his glasses. "I answer to Mr. Green. I’ll decide what needs to be said. You don't need to worry about it."
"Is that so?" Sienna sneered, crossing her arms. "I hope your judgment stays that sharp. In this circle, people who know too much don’t usually live very long."
She gave a contemptuous look toward the empty corner where Evelyn had been standing and walked away. She had no intention of letting Damian find out about the pregnancy. That child was the biggest obstacle to her future. If Alan was going to stay quiet for now, she would use this time to strip Evelyn of everything she had left.
Three days later, Evelyn was leaving the hospital when her phone rang. It was Sophie, and she was hysterical.
"Evelyn... it’s over. Everything is gone."
Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat. She grabbed her coat and hurried toward the exit. "Sophie? Stop crying. Tell me what happened."
"Omni Group... their legal department sent me another letter," Sophie sobbed. "They’re suing me for leaking core design data. They want three million dollars... they want to send me to prison!"
Evelyn hailed a taxi. "It’s Sienna. It has to be her!"
"She used her access in the logistics department to forge my login records and emails," Sophie cried. "Now the whole industry thinks I’m a corporate spy. Headhunters are blacklisting me. Evelyn, what do I do? I don’t have that kind of money!"
Evelyn gripped her phone until her knuckles turned white. Sienna was taking advantage of Damian being in the ICU to purge everyone close to Evelyn. She wanted to isolate her, to leave her with no allies in the city.
Half an hour later, Evelyn reached Sophie’s apartment. The place was a wreck, with sketches and papers scattered everywhere. Sophie was curled up on the sofa, shaking as she held the legal notice.
"They even contacted my landlord," Sophie said, her eyes hollow. "I have to move out in three days. I have nowhere to go."
Evelyn hugged her friend. "Don't be afraid, Sophie. This is my fight."
She scanned the legal document. Every word felt like Sienna’s mocking laughter. "We’ll fight the lawsuit," Evelyn said firmly. "If we lose, I’ll pay the three million. Even if I have to spend every cent I have and go into debt, I won't let you go to prison."
"But Evelyn, your own situation..."
"I still have cards to play," Evelyn interrupted. "Ryan connected me with a legal team. I’ll have them take your case. Sienna thinks she can crush me, but she’s wrong."
By the time Evelyn finished helping Sophie pack, it was dark outside. A cold wind blew as she stepped out of the building. She wrapped her coat tighter and looked for a cab.
Suddenly, the hair on the back of her neck stood up. She felt like she was being watched. She stopped and looked across the street at a black sedan. The window was halfway down, and the glow of a cigarette flickered in the dark.
Under the dim streetlights, Evelyn recognized the man in the driver's seat. His nickname was "Mad Dog." He was Octavina’s personal bodyguard, a brute who handled the "dirty work" for the Green family.
Why was he here? Was he just watching her, or was it something more?
Mad Dog didn't look away when she caught him. Instead, he slowly rolled up the window and started the car, tailing her at a distance. The silent pressure was more suffocating than the iron bar Dennis had used.
Evelyn realized then that it wasn't just a drunk Dennis or a jealous Sienna who wanted her dead. The Green family’s massive, corrupt machine was finally turning, ready to erase her like a stain. She instinctively covered her stomach and hurried her pace, looking small and fragile in the cold wind.
