Chapter 7 CHAPTER SEVEN
CAIUS
I barely acknowledge the guards saying hello to me as we enter my territory. The long drive back did nothing to calm my anger. They are fools, willing to see their packs torn apart by rogues instead of doing something about it.
Well fuck them. I don't need their permission to protect my pack.
"Are we going to talk to the pack members?" Clayton asks when he parks in front of my house.
"Yes, this evening. Make the announcements."
"Okay, what do we tell them?"
"The truth. We're under attack by forces we do not understand and we have to be ready."
"What about the guns? Who do we get them from?" He asks.
"There are guns buried in my parent's house."
He turns to me in surprise. "Your father, who was strict with rules kept guns when the council asked everyone to bring them in?"
I smile at him. "He didn't. He packed everything off and sent his Beta to submit them. My mother met them on the way and took more than half of the guns back."
"Wow, she was truly remarkable."
"She would have taken everything but my father had already told the council that he was submitting guns."
"Do we give the guns to all the guards?"
"No, only those we trust not to wave it around until rogues attack."
"That's wise. I'll get right to it."
I come down from the car and he drives off.
The pack members gather, eating, drinking and celebrating. Soon I'll have to interrupt their party but in the meantime, I let them celebrate. Watching them reminds me of Maeva. She'll fit right into this pack - if she ever agrees to leave her pack.
I smile when i think about how we left off. She's going to be a challenge but I like challenges. I rub my fingers together, remembering how soft her skin felt when I touched her face. Her hands look rough, from years of fighting so it was surprising. It makes me wonder what other parts of her are soft.
I shake my head to clear the thoughts. I must see her tomorrow. She can run and try to reject me all she wants but it won't work out.
I stand up and climb the stage. The clattering of plates and spoons and the laughter ceases when they realise I'm up there. I'm not the type of Alpha they can laugh and joke with. I'm good to them and I make sure they're protected but I do not joke with them as they would like. That was my father but our temperaments are different.
"Good evening. I won't take your time so you can go back to eating. The news from Moon city is not good news. Rogue's are using dark magic to get consciousness and attack packs. We do not know the extent of this dark magic but we do know that they're stronger, they work together and they are not afraid to die."
Some people look afraid while others are merely curious. I keep my attention on the people who are curious.
"Because of this, routines will have to change and security around the borders will be taken more seriously. We'll discuss that with the pack fighters and guards but everyone has to be vigilant and obey every security command given. If you see a rogue, do not engage if you're not a fighter. Signal me through the mind link and help will be sent."
My eyes sweep around the room and when I see that everyone understands me, I tell them good night and leave the stage. Clayton, the pack elders and chief fighters follow me out of the hall and we enter my office to discuss further. The meeting lasts for two hours and we decide on new rotations, more numbers at the borders and the people who will be entrusted to carry the guns.
Tomorrow I'll be going to visit the pack that I took from a weak Alpha who thought he could challenge me to a fight to the death so that we can discuss their own security and how to keep the pack members safe.
When everyone leaves, I lean back on my chair and try to relax but my mind refuses to relax. There's danger that I do not understand lurking in the shadows, ready to strike.
"Alpha Brent wants to speak to you." Clayton says and I open my eyes, surprised that he's back.
I look at the clock on the wall.
"Why does he want to speak to me at 11 pm?"
"Who knows. Maybe to talk more about the meeting."
He hands me the phone and I return the call from Alpha Brent.
"Good evening, Alpha Brent."
"Good evening. Sorry to call so late, I didn't like how you left the meeting so I thought to give you an update."
"More was discussed after I left?" I ask and he laughs.
"No, the meeting ended with more shouting. The council members had a meeting and decided on the next step."
"You'll return the guns so packs can protect themselves better and more wolves don't die for nothing?"
"That option will never happen. The guns were melted and sold off years ago."
I laugh at that. I should have known that this is the reason why they reacted the way they did.
"We decided to visit the witches council. We retrieved one body and we will take it to them and hear what they have to say. Hopefully they'll be able to either identify the witch that did the spell or tell us how to reverse it."
I nod in approval. "That is a brilliant idea. Was it you that came up with it?" I ask.
He laughs and ends the call. I was right.
"You have to get a phone for yourself. I was almost about to run home to finally sleep when the call came in."
"Yours works fine. I don't need a phone."
He groans and shakes his head before leaving. I stay back for a while before I shift and run home to rest.
The meeting with the Shadow pack went well. They won't be getting guns but their security will be very tight considering how close they are to the black forest. After the meeting, I ask Clayton to go home without me.
"How are you going to get home?"
"I'm a werewolf Alpha, Clayton. I will run."
"She won't be happy to see you. She ran away the first chance she got."
"She'll have to deal with it. I'm going to see her."
Clayton shrugs and starts heading to the car. I shift and start running to Maeva's pack. I wonder how she'll react when she sees me, especially because I'll be naked when she sees me. My clothes were shredded when I shifted.
Will she give in to the primal need to fuck me till I'm spent or will she keep up her air of aloofness.
