Chapter 28 CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
CAIUS
Clayton isn't happy. He told me what would happen but I didn't listen to him and now he blames me. He's not wrong.
"I'm sorry I put you in that position."
"It's fine. It's not like I told you this was exactly what was going to happen. Wait… I did."
"You get that one shot." I say.
He silently fumes as he twists his arms around. He's going to be in pain for a while.
"She's very powerful." He says.
"Yes, she is." I say, smiling proudly.
"What's your next step?"
"I'm done being nice. Now she'll have to find out why other werewolves' fear me."
"Do you think that's wise? She's very proud and won't bow to you strong arming her."
"She'll have to. Are you fine? I need to talk to the witch."
"Yeah, I'm fine. Go ahead."
I stand from the couch and go downstairs to the cell. I stop in front of the witch's cell and I stand stand quietly watching her. She doesn't make a move or act like she knows I'm here but I know better than to believe her.
Maeva has never been in this pack before and the forests surrounding us are treacherous and it is easy to get lost in it but somehow, Maeva made it out. I know she had something to do with it. I just want her to tell me how.
I stand quietly for five minutes before she cracks.
"Yes, I helped your mate escape." She says through mind link.
I shake my head and unlock her cell. Didn't take as long as I expected. I take off the sack covering her face and remove her gag.
"Why did you do that? You're interfering in my affairs again, witch and I don't like it."
"Aren't you afraid that I will kill you right now and escape? I can speak so I can cast spells." She says.
"No. In a few hours, your people should be here to get you. Leave my land and never show your face."
"That would be hard seeing that I have been chosen by the witches council to liaise with you werewolves."
She says werewolves like it's a curse and looks at me like she dares me to do something about it.
"Why aren't you afraid that I'll kill you?" She asks.
"I've told the witches council that I want another witch and they agreed. Once you leave this pack, I won't see you ever again."
The shock is evident on her face and she mutters a spell and her bounds come undone.
"Why did you do that?" She says, standing up. "I am important to this mission. Without me, you'll all fall on your dumb asses and run around in circles."
"Duly noted. We'll run around in circles with another witch."
She screams and raises her hands and lighting streaks appear. I don't flinch and I don't move away. I maintain steady eye context, daring her to do it.
She's in a visible fight with the smart part of her brain, debating whether or not it is wise to attack me. Eventually she puts her hands down and continues glaring at me. The hate in her eyes shines bright and I smile.
"A werewolf hurt you really bad, didn't he?" I say, to irritate her.
She freezes and turns her back on me. The amount of hate she has could have only been caused by an equal amount of love. She turns and has a smile on her face.
"I gave her a cure for the heat." She says.
"There's no cure for the heat. There are blockers and you didn't give it to her."
"But I will and you know that once she gets wanting you out of the way, she will resist you for the rest of her life."
"The blockers only work for a certain amount of time. But before they wear off, I would have already marked and claimed her as my mate."
"You're very confident."
I nod in response. "You'll try and sneak into her pack to give her the blocker before you leave. Please do, it will make claiming her more delicious because she can't claim that she was overtaken by raw passion."
She clenches her teeth hard. "Tell the witches council that we have settled our differences and that you want me to continue the work I started."
"I don't want to do you any favours."
"It's not a favour to me. You'll be helping your kind. I'm the only one who can help you with this situation."
"I'm fine with running in circles."
She screams in frustration. "You are all the same. Bull headed, stubborn males. Do you not understand what is at stake?"
"Enlighten me." I say slowly.
She bites her tongue and considers whether or not she should tell me. "One of my sister's saw it in a vision. This thing is way beyond witches and werewolves. If these people are not stopped, the world as we know it, will fold in on itself and all will be destroyed."
I clench my fists in anger. I should have known there was more to the witches help than just getting their fellow witches back.
"You witches really can't be trusted, can you? That is more reason why I should work with someone I don't want to strangle."
"I'll do whatever you want, please don't take this away from me."
She's earnestly begging. She's not down on her knees but knowing the type of person she is, this isn't far from it.
"Why is this so important to you?" I ask.
She looks away from me and takes a deep breath before she meets my eyes again.
"This is my chance to redeem myself. This is my chance to prove myself to the council and I won't let it go without fighting for it."
I nod in understanding. I know a thing or two about trying to prove yourself.
"I understand. I'll make the call on one condition."
Her eyebrows raise in suspicion. "What condition is that?"
"Apologise to me and my Beta for what you did."
"Not for helping your mate escape? I thought she was important to you."
"Apologise or there is no deal."
"Alright. Fine, I apologise."
"We're going to go up and you're going to apologise properly. Especially to him. Maeva did a number on him."
She sighs heavily. "Fine."
"I need you to talk to the witches council. We'll take this witch."
"What does that mean? I don't understand." Alpha Brent says.
"Just tell them. They'll understand. Please don't ask any questions and please don't let the others know."
He sighs heavily. "Fine. And your mate? Are you both marked yet?" He asks.
"Not yet. It's a work in progress."
"That's not good enough, Caius. You have left me with no choice. I'm going ahead with the councils decision on this."
"And what is the councils decision?"
"You'll find out with everyone else. Good bye."
He ends the call and I smile to myself. Maeva is not going to be happy about this.
