Chapter 114 CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN
MAEVA
“We need to send out those who are going to kidnap the vampires soon. The sooner we do it, the better. I’ll get Bane and one of the witches on it right away.” Caius says and I sigh.
“What?” he asks, knowing immediately that I disagree.
“We’re at war, Caius; you can’t just take decisions and present them to the Alphas. You should bring them in to discuss it.”
He seems genuinely puzzled and I laugh. “They’re not the council. Right now, everyone distrusts each other. If you suddenly turn up with a solution for the witches, they’ll find it insulting. You need to include them in the discussion.”
“Fine.” He says, standing up. “I’ll send for everyone.”
He gives me a kiss then leaves.
“He’s destined for great things.” Raina says, smiling.
I return her smile but watch her. I still cannot believe how old Caius says she is. “I’m glad he has you by his side.” She adds again and I thank her genuinely.
A few minutes later, we all gather in the bigger room for meeting. Caius sits at the head of the table and I sit by his side. He holds my hand under the table and squeezes. He looks at the long table where Alpha Grayson, Alpha Garrick, and Alpha Magnus are sitting on. The witches, Taron and Bale are also here.
I look from Alpha Magnus to Clayton and I feel sad all over again. Clayton is sitting stiff as a board, not looking at anything.
“Raina told me something a few minutes ago. I thought it was a good idea so I brought you all to listen since it also involves you.”
“Liar.” I say through mind link and he squeezes my thigh.
Raina stands up, clears her throat and starts telling them exactly what she told us. I watch the alphas absorb her words. Magnus grunts, nodding slowly. Grayson’s eyes narrow in calculation. Garrick strokes his chin, thoughtful.
I look at the witches who are exchanging glances amongst themselves. From their faces, I see that they agree with it.
“Do you think it could work?” I ask the witches when Raina sits down.
“It could work. The chances that it could work are really high.” Aliyah starts. “But a spell like that would require black magic and I do not perform black magic or support it.”
Raina stands again. “I understand your fears. That occurred to me. We’re not trying to cure them or do another spell, we’re just trying to cut off the link they have to you.”
Aliyah thinks it over then nods. “Then that could work. We just need a vampire.”
The conversation shifts to how to get a vampire. We have to kidnap one because none of them will come willingly.
Alpha Magnus clears his throat and Clayton sinks farther into his chair. I don’t like this one bit. Clayton has lost every form of joy he has.
“We should select people that will go. A small team, if they’re too many, the vampires will notice.”
Alpha Grayson agrees. “A small team brave enough to risk being sucked dry. The vampires will make sure to suck every single drop they can if they catch any werewolf near their territory. If you go south a few miles after my pack, you should find some of them there. They dip a toe in our territory occasionally. We ignore them because they don’t kill anyone but since this rogue thing, I have a feeling that they’ll be bolder.”
“I see now why it was important to bring the issue here. I like his suggestion.” Caius says through mind link.
Elaine raises her hand with a smile. “I volunteer. I’m the best here at masking scents and sounds. If we’re dealing with vampires, we’ll need it.”
Aliyah smiles while Moira rolls her eyes. “Thank you, Elaine. We need at least one more person. This mission is critical because it needs to be subtle.” Caius says. “Personally, I don’t believe that every wolf here is for us. Some of them might be spies planted here, so we need to do this without the rest of the pack finding out.”
“I volunteer.” Bane says. “My pack knows I plan to sneak into the pack to bring a few things. That could be my excuse for leaving without others knowing where I’m going.”
“No one will dare ask us where Elaine is because we’ll all be in the cell with the rogues or at the house.” Moira says.
“Good. We need one more person.” Caius says and Clayton raises his hand.
I see Caius’s jaw tense and his grip on my hand tightens.
“We need someone whose absence won’t be felt.” I say quickly.
“I volunteers Luis. No one will ask questions if he disappears for a few days, I can say he went with Bane to check out their pack and see how the rogues are living.” Caius says.
“I also volunteer one of my sons.” Alpha Magnus says. “They’re strong wolves and they’ll be good help.”
I look to Alpha Garrick and Grayson, who have been quiet since the volunteering started. Alpha Garrick has been quiet since the meeting started.
“That makes them four. I think three wolves and a witch is more than enough to kidnap one vampire.” Caius says.
We plan when they’ll leave and how they’ll leave and when the meeting is over, everybody leaves.
“Did you talk to Clayton?” Caius asks me.
We’ve been very busy since the rogue attack today that I forgot about my conversation with Clayton earlier in the day.
“I spoke to him but he made me swear by the spirits and the goddess that I won’t tell you what is bothering him.
Caius frowns and I shrug. I want to tell him because I believe he can talk to Clayton and Alpha Magnus and fix this but I made a promise.
“We didn’t finish our conversation before the rogues attacked. I better go find him.”
I leave the room in search of Clayton and I find him close to the house Alpha Magnus is staying in.
“Do you want to talk to her? He can’t stop you if you want to.” I say and he jumps, startled.
“Please stop doing that.” He says, exhaling and walking away from the house.
“Can we talk? It’s obvious you’re not your usual self.”
He stops, turns, raises his arms, and drops them by his side. He shakes his head and turns around, continuing to talk away from me.
“I know it’s frustrating.”
He stops and turns again. “You don’t. You chose not to be with your mate when you found him, I don’t have a choice!”
I try to say something but he continues. “Do you know what he said to me after the meeting? He said I should reject her and give myself the chance to find someone else. That is the woman the goddess chose for me, I can’t reject her. The worst part is, he’s not wrong. You don’t how it feels Maeva, stop trying to talk to me about it.”
He walks away again and I don’t stop him.
