Chapter 112 CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWELVE
Chapter 112 CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWELVE
MAEVA
The phone rings at 2 am. Two minutes after Caius finally went to bed. I hear him growl in annoyance and I stand and reach over him to get the phone. It’s an unknown caller but I answer the call anyway. It might be a pack in need. I know he regrets getting a phone.
“Alpha Caius?” the caller asks.
“Alpha Maeva. What happened?”
Caius turns and holds me tighter while he tries to go back to sleep.
“I’m sorry to be calling this late but our pack was just attacked. Our Alpha gave us this number so we can be able to reach Alpha Caius if something ever happened.”
“Alright. Who’s your Alpha and is he okay?”
There’s silence on the other end before the caller sighs heavily. “Our alpha is Alpha Brent. He died, Alpha Maeva. The rogues killed him.”
Caius snatches the phone out of my hands immediately. “What do you mean, Alpha Brent is dead? When did this happen?”
“It just happened. I saw him fall with my own eyes. I held his lifeless body before I had to run. There were too many rogues. They came out of nowhere and we had to fight.”
The wolf starts crying and Caius tries to get him to calm down.
“Be safe and stay away from forests. We’re waiting for you.”
The call ends and Caius falls back on the bed, staring at the ceiling with his eyes wide open. He’s quiet for a few minutes and I let him have the time to mourn Alpha Brent.
“I should’ve never let him go. I should have insisted that he stayed here. Why did I let him go that day?”
“It’s not your fault. He lost a lot of his friends and people he grew up with. He wouldn’t have agreed to stay here.”
He sighs. “He was good friends with my father and after my father died, he always made sure I was fine. Whenever I went against the council, he was always there to defend me.” he laughs a bit. “Then he’d yell at me on the way back. He was a father.”
“He will be remembered as a father. A great werewolf icon. Trust me, his impact will never be forgotten.”
He’s in so much pain, I can feel it through the bond, and I’m surprised he’s holding on as he is. I lay my head on his chest and hug him. He hugs me back even tighter and sighs.
“I have to go and find a way to squeeze them in.” he says, trying to stand up.
I push him back on the bed and shake my head. “We have a few hours until they come. We can figure it out tomorrow. You need to sleep.”
“Thank you but I can’t sleep. This news is devastating.” He says, kissing my hair.
“You have to sleep. These rogues and their alpha king have made it clear that they’re going to be sending a hundred rogues everyday to fight us. If you don’t sleep, you can’t lead. If you don’t sleep, you’ll make mistakes.”
“How can I sleep when the last link I had to my parents just died?”
“He’s not the last link,” I say cradling his face. “You have this pack and it will stay with you forever. It won’t be easy to fall asleep, but we’ll try. I’ll kiss you, and we’re going to have sex until you’re exhausted and you’re going to fall into a long deep sleep. I’ll take care of anything that happens before you wake up.”
He smiles, shakes his head, and pulls me down for a kiss.
The remaining survivors of Alpha Brent’s pack arrive early in the morning. A pack of more than a thousand pack members and only hundred survived. They arrived bloody, with red eyes and pained expressions. My heart aches for them and all the others who were affected. If only we knew how many they are and why it seems like they never finish, we could take the fight to them and kill them finally.
After getting them settled and going over the food allocations, I look for Caius. I find him watching Clayton who is once again, sitting alone and looking sad.
“What happened to him?” I ask through mind link.
“I don’t know. He doesn’t want to talk to me about it. I’ve asked and he told me to leave him alone. I don’t know how else to get to him.”
“Maybe I should try. Hopefully he tells me and we solve it before whatever is eating him up festers.”
He nods and we both watch him pick at his food with disinterest. When he stands up and leaves the hall, I follow him. I follow slowly behind as he walks into the forest and sits on a tree log.
“Clayton.” I say softly when I come up beside him.
He turns and sighs when he sees that it’s me. “I promise I’m fine. Whatever is wrong with me won’t affect my duties but I really don’t want to talk about it.”
I sit down close to him and he moves away. I pull him back to where he was sitting and he starts laughing.
“Why won’t you leave me alone?” he asks.
“You didn’t leave me alone when I had my issues with Caius. You kept butting in and giving unsolicited opinions so now I’m returning the favor.”
He sighs but doesn’t say anything and we sit together in silence.
“I found my mate.” He finally says.
At first, I’m excited for him but then I take in his grim expression and that way he’s been acting for days and I pause. “That’s supposed to be a good thing. Why aren’t you happy?”
“First of all, you have to swear on the goddess and the spirits that you won’t tell Caius.”
“Why? Is she an enemy?” I gasp as something occurs to me. It’s rare but it does happen sometimes. “Is your mate one of the witches?”
“No and no. I won’t say any other thing until you swear.”
“Fine. I swear by the goddess and the spirits that everything we discuss here stays between the both of us.” It’s going to be hard but I trust Caius to pull the truth out of him on his own.
“She’s he daughter of Alpha Magnus.”
I’m taken aback. “Alpha Magus doesn’t have a daughter, he has two sons.”
“He has a daughter he has kept hidden from the world. They snuck her in here and she’s been staying with him at the house.”
“How did you find out?”
“She found me, I think. Her scent hit me and I chased after her. She was running from me and I didn’t know why. When I finally caught up with her at the house, Alpha Magnus came in and almost killed me.”
I growl in annoyance and he shakes his head. “He has good reasons. She had an illness as a child that left her unable to be anyone’s mate.”
I’m about to ask more questions when the signal rings out. Rogues. We both start running towards the signal.
