Chapter 173 Feast of Lies: Part One
Chapter 173 Feast of Lies: Part One
POV: Lucian
The guest quarters were designed to communicate something specific about Thornhaven's understanding of what constituted appropriate hospitality.
Not comfortable in the way of adequate comfort. Comfortable in the way of someone who had been thinking about what the person receiving the quarters would understand from their quality and had calibrated accordingly. The bedding was silk of a specific weight. The furniture was old enough to communicate that it had been here before the person receiving it arrived and would be here after, the permanence of it distinguishing it from furnishings that had been installed in anticipation of a guest versus furnishings that had simply always been here.
The window that looked over the courtyard showed the repair work being done to the sections that had come down. Lucian watched the workers from the window with the specific quality of someone who had caused what they were watching to be fixed and was maintaining an honest relationship with that fact.
Lior occupied the adjacent room through a door that neither of them had locked. The mate bond made the presence legible regardless of the door's status, and in the hours since the throne room meeting they had moved between the two rooms as the conversation required.
The evening's feast required preparation that Lior took more seriously than Lucian was initially inclined to.
"The masquerade format is not ceremonial," Lior said, working through the specific vampiric court knowledge that forty years of navigating it had deposited in him. "It provides social license for conversations that could not happen in transparent court. But it also provides cover for things more hostile than conversation. Understanding who is behind which mask determines which conversations to have and which to avoid."
"You know who will be there," Lucian said.
"I know most of the court," Lior said. "Lord Matthias controls the military faction. He wants you weaponized. Lady Seris leads the blood purists who consider your existence an offense against natural order. Kaelen will be there and will find some mechanism for expressing his position despite losing the direct-authority argument with the king."
"And the king," Lucian said.
"Severan controls all of them through the specific mechanism of being the thing they all orbit around," Lior said. "The king's interest in you is genuine. That does not make the king your ally. It makes him someone whose interest can be worked with toward outcomes that also work for us."
"The distinction being," Lucian said.
"That an ally wants what you want," Lior said. "Someone whose interest can be worked with wants something different that overlaps with what you want in the specific area where cooperation is possible. Outside that area, they want what they want."
Lucian put on the formal clothes that had been provided with the specific quality of clothes that had been selected with the recipient's existing context in mind. Silver and gold. The twin-moon colors. Whoever had selected them had either been briefed on the Moonstone trial or had access to information about the Varrow bloodline that communicated the same thing.
The mask was crafted from interlocking silver and gold, the two metals wound together in the specific pattern that the mate bond's light and shadow produced in their combined presence. Looking at it produced the specific quality of recognition, a representation of something he carried being reflected back to him in external form.
He wore it.
