The Morning after the Crowned Moon

Chapter 190: The Morning After the Crowned Moon

The first light of dawn spilled across the royal chambers, soft as silk and warm as a whispered blessing. Queen Alicia stirred first.

The air still carried the echo of the night before, magic, heat, vows etched onto their skin and souls. Brooke’s arm lay heavy and protective across her waist, his breath steady against her neck. The mark he’d given her glowed faintly under the sheets, and her wolf, Flo, purred with an almost languid satisfaction.

Alicia exhaled slowly, savoring the moment.

“Morning, my queen,” Brooke murmured, voice rough with sleep. He pulled her closer. “Tell me this isn’t a dream.”

“If it is,” she whispered, turning into him, “don’t wake me.”

Brooke laughed softly, brushing a kiss along her shoulder, then her jaw, then her lips, slow, reverent, claiming her like the vows hadn’t already. She melted into him, fully, the kind of kiss that rewrites a life.

“Last night…” he breathed against her mouth.

“Wasn’t enough,” she finished with a half-smile.

Brooke shifted over her, eyes darkening. “Then let me...”

A hard knock on the heavy doors sliced through the moment.

They froze.

Alicia frowned. “It’s barely dawn. Who would dare..?”

Another knock, sharper, urgent.

“My Queen!” a Council guard called. “You are summoned. Immediately.”

Brooke growled softly. Kael, his wolf, stirred in his mind. Too early. Too aggressive.

Alicia placed a calming hand on Brooke’s chest. “Come in.”

The door opened only enough for Elder Meros to slip through. His face was drained of color.

“Forgive the intrusion…” He bowed deeply. “But you must both come. Now.”

Alicia straightened. “Has something happened?”

Meros swallowed. “The omen… the Crowned Moon… it wasn’t just a blessing. We thought it a passive sign, but...” He hesitated, eyes flicking between the newly mated royals. “My queen… your wedding night altered the ley-lines.”

Brooke tensed. “Meaning?”

“Meaning,” Meros whispered shakily, “something awoke beneath the Citadel.”

Alicia’s pulse quickened. “Awoke?”

“Yes, my Queen.” He lowered his voice. “And it is asking for you.”

Brooke instantly stepped in front of her. “She’s not going anywhere until you explain exactly what...”

The chamber shook.

Silently. Violently.

Alicia grabbed Brooke’s arm as crystals dangling from the ceiling chimed with a clear, eerie resonance. The mirror panels along the eastern wall flickered, once, twice, before stabilizing.

Brooke’s eyes widened. “What was that!”

Meros clenched his robes. “The Heart’s remnants. The magic you freed… it didn’t simply vanish. It… chose.”

Alicia felt Flo stir, uneasy.

Chosen? By who? For what?

“We need to move,” Meros insisted. “The Council is gathering at once.”

Brooke threw on clothes, still bristling with protective fury. Alicia dressed quickly but paused as she realized, her mark glowed brighter than it had moments before.

Brooke saw it too.

“That’s new,” he murmured.

Alicia swallowed. “I know.”

They exchanged a look, fear, resolve, and something deeper they both finally understood.

They stepped out into the hallway, and the entire Citadel seemed to listen.

The torches dimmed when Alicia walked by. The marble walls hummed. Servants and guards bowed more deeply than usual, eyes lingering not on her crown but on the faint glow at her throat where Brooke had marked her.

“Why are they staring?” Brooke muttered, jaw tight.

Meros whispered, “Because, Alpha Brooke, during the quake… the Heart’s light flared inside the Citadel. And it...” He swallowed. “It took her shape.”

Alicia stopped cold. “My shape?”

“Yes, my Queen.” Meros looked terrified. “A perfect silhouette of your wolf, Flo, formed from pure white fire.”

Brooke blinked. “That’s impossible.”

“Clearly not,” Meros whispered.

They reached the Council chamber doors, and before Meros could push them open, they swung inward on their own.

A ripple of unease went through the hallway.

Brooke’s hand brushed Alicia’s.

“Whatever this is,” he whispered, “we face it together.”

Alicia nodded, steadying her breathing.

Inside, the full Council stood in a tense semicircle. Max and Mira, Yuri and Liora, Max Junior and Lyria, all already present, turned toward her.

Max’s eyes widened. “Alicia… your mark…”

Yuri whispered, “It’s glowing like a star.”

Diana, kept under watch, smirked faintly. “The Heart always did love her more.”

Alicia ignored the jab. “What happened?”

Elder Selwyn stepped forward, trembling.

“My Queen… during dawn, the Heart’s residual magic manifested in the lower sanctum. The guards saw it. A wolf, pure light, crowned with flame, speaking a single phrase.”

Alicia’s breath hitched. “What phrase?”

Selwyn opened his shaking palm to reveal a glowing sigil etched onto it as if burned there.

“It said, ‘The Queen is Bound. Bring Her Home.’”

Brooke stiffened. “Bound by what?”

Before anyone could answer, a roar ripped through the Citadel.

An unnatural, echoing cry that was part wolf, part thunder, part something ancient and newly born. The walls pulsed. The sigils around the high ceiling flared.

Alicia felt a sudden tug, not physical, but deep, soulful, like something was trying to pull her out of herself.

“Brooke..!” she gasped.

He grabbed her instantly. “I’ve got you, Alicia, stay with me...”

Alicia’s knees weakened as Flo’s voice burst into her mind..

"It’s calling us. The Heart’s leftover spirit. Something incomplete. Something seeking its queen."

Max stepped forward, face pale. “What’s happening to her?”

Yuri reached for her too. “Alicia, focus on my voice. Stay here. Stay present.”

But the pull intensified, like invisible chains wrapping around her chest.

Brooke held her tighter, snarling. “Let her go!”

Max Junior moved to support Brooke. “We need a warding circle, now!”

The floor beneath their feet began to glow, forming intricate runes Alicia had never seen.

Meros stared in horror. “It’s forming the circle by itself… this is impossible…”

Alicia gasped as a phantom shape materialized behind the Council throne in a towering silhouette of light, crowned, shifting between wolf and human and something more ancient.

The temperature in the chamber dropped.

Brooke stepped in front of Alicia instinctively, Kael’s growl echoing through the room.

“Show yourself!” Brooke demanded. “Or stand down!”

The silhouette bent its head, slowly, reverently, toward Alicia.

And in a voice like a memory caught in a storm, it whispered.

“You are not yet complete.”

Alicia’s heart lurched. “What do you mean?”

The figure raised its hand, and the chamber exploded with white fire.

Everyone was knocked back except Alicia, who remained suspended in the light, weightless, breathless, helpless.

Brooke screamed her name.

Max called out.

Yuri surged forward.

But none could reach her.

The figure’s voice echoed through the blinding radiance.

“Reconstitute the Kingdom, Queen of Two Worlds, or I will reconstitute for you.”

The light swallowed her.

And the world went silent.
