Chapter 42 Daemon's Offer
Chapter 42 Daemon's Offer
Sienna's POV
The doors hit the walls so hard the sound echoed off the ceiling.
Every person in the courtroom spun toward the entrance.
A woman stood in the doorway. Dark hair. Wide eyes. One hand pressed to her bleeding arm.
"They're in the building," she gasped. "Hunters. Six of them. Armed."
The courtroom shattered into noise.
Guards drew weapons. Assembly members scrambled from their seats. Someone screamed. Someone else knocked over a table.
Celeste rose from her throne. "Lock it down. Now!"
The guards moved fast, sealing the side exits. Two of them pushed toward the woman in the doorway.
Daemon Cross had not moved.
He stood ten feet from me, completely still, while the room broke apart around him. His eyes swept the space once, calculated something I couldn't see, and then returned to Celeste.
"The hunters are not here for the court," he said, loud enough to carry. "They are here for her."
He pointed at me.
Every eye landed on my face.
My stomach dropped.
"How do you know that?" Celeste demanded.
"Because they've been tracking her power signature since it spiked two days ago," Daemon said. "They are human hunters. Ex-military. They work outside Assembly law and they do not take prisoners."
"How do you know about them?" the prosecutor asked.
"Because my pack has been dealing with them for three years," Daemon said. "We know their methods."
Distant shouting broke through the walls. Something heavy hit the floor in the corridor.
Celeste looked at her head guard. He nodded once. Confirmed.
She turned back to Daemon.
"Make your offer," she said. "Fast."
Daemon faced the Assembly. His voice was steady even as another crash sounded from the hall.
"I am the alpha of the Ashborne Pack," he said. "We have seventeen members. Twelve are werewolves. Five are not."
Silence punched through the chaos.
"Our five non-werewolf members include a fire-blooded shifter, two seer wolves, a blood-bonded healer, and one other whose abilities I will not name in open court." He paused. "All five are peaceful. All five are controlled. All five are valued."
"That is illegal," the prosecutor said.
"That is the future," Daemon replied. "And it works."
He took one step toward Celeste.
"I am offering to take Sienna Voss into Ashborne Pack custody. She will live under my protection and my authority. She will train. She will learn control. She will not be caged, but she will not be free to act without oversight until the Assembly is satisfied."
"You would swear to this?" Celeste asked.
"I will swear a binding alpha oath," Daemon said. "On my life and my pack's standing. If she causes harm while under my watch, I bear full consequence."
That word — oath — landed hard. Alpha oaths were unbreakable. Every werewolf in the room knew what it cost to offer one.
Even I knew.
I watched Daemon carefully. He was not looking at me like a prize. He was not looking at me like a problem. He was looking at me like someone he had already decided to fight for.
That terrified me more than anything the prosecutor had said.
Another crash from the corridor. Closer this time.
"There's more," Daemon said. "This situation, Sienna Voss, the gene discovery, the hunters outside this building. It is not isolated. It is the beginning of a larger problem."
"Explain," Celeste said.
"Supernatural beings across seven territories have been going into hiding for the past eighteen months. Shifters. Seers. Healers. Some with werewolf blood. Some without." He looked across the Assembly. "They are frightened. Not because of what they are. Because of how your laws treat what they are."
He let that sit.
"I am proposing a treaty," he said. "Between this Assembly and the independent packs. A formal agreement that protects gifted individuals across species. Gives them a path to live without hiding. Gives you oversight and structure in return."
"That would require rewriting half our legal code," Celeste said.
"Yes," Daemon agreed. "It would."
"And you think one woman in chains is worth that kind of upheaval?"
Daemon looked at me then. Really looked.
"I think forty-two percent of your Assembly carrying a hidden gene is worth that kind of upheaval," he said. "Sienna Voss is just the reason you can no longer pretend the problem doesn't exist."
The room went quiet enough that I could hear my own heartbeat.
Then Kael stood. "I support the offer."
"Of course you do," the prosecutor said.
"Three Assembly members from the eastern region are also prepared to support it," said a woman near the back.
Heads turned. More hands went up. Slow. Reluctant. But real.
I stared at the floor. My wrists ached from the chains. My mind raced.
Daemon's offer was not what I expected. It was not a rescue. It was not freedom. But it was not a cage either.
It was something I did not have a word for.
A choice that wasn't really a choice. But it still felt like one.
I looked up at Daemon and found him watching me. He raised one eyebrow. A small, quiet question.
I had no answer yet.
Celeste raised her hand. "The council will need time to—"
"Excuse me."
The voice came from the left side of the courtroom. Quiet. Controlled. Precise.
A man stood from the Assembly seats. He was not young. He was not old. He had the kind of face that gave nothing away.
I had never seen him before.
"My name is Orion," he said. "I represent a body this Assembly has not been formally introduced to."
Celeste frowned. "You were seated with the Assembly members."
"I was placed there," he said, "so that I could observe today's proceedings without disruption." He paused. "I have observed enough."
The room had gone completely still.
"I also have an offer for Sienna Voss," he said.
He looked directly at me. His eyes were calm and ancient in a way that had nothing to do with age.
"One that I believe you will find considerably more interesting than anything offered today."
He reached inside his jacket and did not rush.
Daemon stepped forward. "Don't."
But Orion was already pulling something out.
Not a weapon.
A seal. Round. Jet black. Marked with symbols I did not recognize.
He held it up so the room could see.
Three Assembly members went visibly pale the moment their eyes landed on it.
"What is that?" Celeste asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Orion smiled for the first time.
"Proof," he said, "that Sienna Voss has already been chosen."
