Chapter 56 THE D-DAY
Kenna
I stand before the mirror as the maids swarm around me like obedient insects, tugging, fastening, smoothing my wedding dress. Their hands were trembling as they perfected what was always destined to be mine.
The silk wedding gown fits me perfectly like a second skin. Silver thread glitters against the fabric, catching the pale morning light pouring through the towering windows of the Moon Pack Villa.
Luna's gown.
My gown.
Perfect.
Everything is perfect.
My reflection stares back at me in the mirror— radiant, powerful, untouchable. This is the face history will remember as the only woman who captured Varkos Draven’s heart.
I inhale slowly, savoring every single moment of this.
“You look magnificent,” Maria’s voice shatters through my thoughts, stepping closer, her eyes wide with awe as she adjusts the fall of my veil. “My lady… I have never seen a bride so breathtaking. Everyone will be speechless, especially Alpha Varkos.”
“As they should be of course,” I shoot back, tilting my head slightly to study myself from another angle, watching the way the light bends around me. “A Luna should look nothing more than breathtaking on her wedding day.”
Maria smiles nervously, nodding. “You were born for this position. Everyone can see it. Alpha Varkos is very fortunate to have you as his mate.”
Fortunate?
The word almost makes me laugh.
“Fortunate?” I repeat softly, my gaze still fixed on my reflection in the mirror. “No, Maria. He should be kissing the very ground I walk on.”
Her hands falter for just a second before she recovers. “Y-yes, my lady. Of course.”
Today, Varkos finally becomes mine. Not because he loves me—of course, I sure do know very well that he doesn’t, he thinks I’m stupid enough to believe him. Love is a weakness, a disease that clouds judgment and softens resolve. Love is what made him reckless and vulnerable to that dirty human.
“Everything is ready, my lady.”Maria lowers her gaze, finishing the final touch-up of the veil with reverent care. I straighten my shoulders, the weight of destiny settling comfortably upon me.
“Yes,” I say quietly. “It sure—“
Knock. Knock.
The sound of the knock on the door breaks the moment. But I don’t need to turn to know who it is, “You can enter.” I say calmly.
The door opens.
“I—I was told you wanted to see me?”
A familiar voice echoes behind me. Pathetically breakable as I open my eyes and meet her gaze through the mirror.
Ginnie.
She stands just inside the doorway, stiff as a prey standing face to face with its predator. Her hands are folded too tightly, knuckles white. Her eyes flick to the maids, then back to me—calculating, desperate.
“Yes,” I hissed, smiling at her reflection. “I called for you.”
She swallows. “You… you wanted me to help with something?”
“I want you,” I say, finally turning to face her now, my smile widening. “To personally do my makeup as the bride.”
For a moment, she stands there, and confusion flashes across her face. Then suspicion. Followed by something else I couldn’t quite figure out yet. Before she can part her lips to speak, I raise a single finger.
“All of you,” I snap, my voice thundering across the room. “Get out. Now.”
The maids freeze. Maria steps forward, her brows furrowed in shock, “My lady, the ceremony is close. We still need to—”
“Did I stutter?” I cut in coldly, my eyes locking on hers. “Get. Out.”
The room shifts instantly. Chairs scrape, every one of their heads bowed as none of them dared meet my gaze as they rushed past Ginnie like she’s already a ghost.
Maria lingers—just for a second longer.
“Get the fuck out!”
She leaves without hesitating for even one bit, the door shutting behind her with a clicking sound. I cross the room in two swift motions and lock the door myself.
Click.
I turn back to Ginnie now.
She hasn’t moved.
Good.
I circle her slowly, my steps deliberate—like a predator enjoying the moment before the kill. She turns to face me too, her eyes tracking my every movement. Her shoulders were tight with barely restrained panic.
“Look at you,” I whisper. “Still standing. Still breathing. After everything you tried to do.”
“I didn’t—” she starts.
A bitter laughter tears out of me. Low. Mocking. Cruel. “Well…you couldn’t stop this wedding. Not with your little tactics. And definitely not with that ridiculous belief that you mattered.”
I stop in front of her, close enough to see her pulse hammering in her throat. “Everything I said is finally happening,” I whisper, speaking lightly as if discussing the weather. “Tonight is our wedding night, and I’m going to poison him.”
Ginnie’s breath catches sharply, a sound torn straight from her chest. “You’re lying,” she whispers.
“Am I?”
“You won’t get away with it.” She shakes her head, stepping back to create distance between us.
“Oh, but I already have,” I lean closer, my voice dripping with every bit of venom. “Who do you think they’ll believe? The Luna… or a stupid human slave like you?”
“As long as I’m alive,” she shoots back, forcing the words out of her trembling lips. “I won’t let you harm Varkos.”
Alive.
The word delights me.
I chuckle softly. “You say that like it’s guaranteed,” I lean closer, my lips hovering near her ear now. “You and Lily…should be very careful today.”
“What…” her breath hitches, What does that mean?”
I straighten, smoothing my gown as if standing close to her has already stained my wedding dress. “I mean…accidents happen,” I say lightly. “People fall and die while their kids can get kidnapped.”
Her face goes stiff.
“If you dare lay a finger on Lily,” Ginnie whispers hoarsely, “I swear—”
“You swear what?” I snap, my gaze locked on hers without leaving for even a single second. “You are in no position to make threats, you know that right?”
“This,” I gesture to myself, “is what having power looks like. And tonight, I’m going to erase every obstacle in my path—starting with you.”
Her knees nearly buckle, but she forces herself to stay upright. Defiant. Foolish.
Before she can say another word, I turn my back on her and sit before the dresser. “Now if you don’t mind, the wedding is minutes away and I’ll need you to do what I called you here for.”
I meet her eyes in the mirror.
“And don’t keep me waiting.”
