The sun barely crested the horizon as the warriors gathered in the clearing. Their breath formed clouds in the cold morning air, and tension rippled through their ranks like an unspoken command. Today marked the beginning of their first strike against Magnus and his growing army.
Amara tightened the straps of her armor and surveyed the assembled fighters. Kian stood at the front, his presence alone a beacon of stability. Jarek, beside him, rolled his shoulders in anticipation. Dorian and his warriors from the Northern Pack stood a little apart, still regarded with cautious eyes, though their commitment had been proven in training.
"You all know why we’re here," Kian said, his voice steady but firm. "We strike first. We do not let Magnus dictate this war. We control the battlefield."
Murmurs of agreement echoed through the gathered wolves.
Amara stepped forward. "We move in three groups. Jarek, you take the western flank with a dozen of our fastest fighters. Dorian, you and your warriors take the eastern side. Kian and I will lead the main force straight through their center."
Dorian nodded. "Understood."
Jarek grinned. "About time we get some action."
Kian’s gaze swept across them all. "We strike hard and fast. We weaken them before they can strike back. No mercy for those who would see us fall."
The warriors dispersed, moving into their assigned positions as the first signs of Magnus’s forces appeared beyond the tree line. The enemy had built an encampment, unaware of the coming storm.
The attack began with precision. Jarek and his flank struck first, arrows cutting through the early light. The eastern side followed, Dorian’s warriors using their agility to disrupt the rogue formations. Chaos erupted, and by the time Kian and Amara led the main charge, the enemy was already in disarray.
Amara moved through the battlefield like a blade through fabric. Her strikes were swift and calculated, her instincts sharpened by years of training. She caught sight of Dorian engaged in combat, holding his own against two rogues. Nearby, Jarek laughed as he slammed an enemy to the ground, reveling in the fight.
Kian fought beside her, the two moving as one. They had fought together so many times that their movements felt like second nature. Each block, each strike, each step was coordinated without words.
Magnus’s forces were stronger than expected, but not unified. The advantage was still theirs.
Then, a horn sounded from the distance.
Amara froze for a brief second, recognizing the sound of reinforcements. Magnus had been prepared for this. More rogues emerged from the trees, their numbers swelling.
"Fall back to defensive positions!" Kian commanded, shifting their strategy in an instant.
The battle turned from a strike into a struggle for control. The wolves regrouped, tightening their formation. Jarek’s flank was forced back, while Dorian’s group struggled to hold the eastern line.
Amara gritted her teeth. They had to hold. They could not let Magnus gain the upper hand so soon into the war.
With renewed focus, she pushed forward, slashing through the enemy ranks. The fight had only just begun.
The battle raged on, relentless and unforgiving. The air was thick with the scent of blood and earth, the sounds of clashing steel and snarling wolves echoing through the battlefield. Magnus’s reinforcements poured in from the trees, overwhelming the initial advantage Kian’s forces had gained.
Amara pivoted, barely avoiding a blade aimed at her back. With a swift counterattack, she drove her dagger into her opponent’s chest before pulling it free and turning to her next target. The fight had become a desperate attempt to hold their ground.
Jarek’s flank was being pushed back, their defensive line crumbling under the sheer force of Magnus’s growing numbers. Dorian and his warriors struggled to keep the eastern side from being overrun. The wolves fought viciously, but they were losing ground.
Kian slashed through an enemy, panting as he regrouped with Amara. "We can’t hold this position! We need to regroup!"
Amara knew he was right, but retreating now would mean ceding the battlefield entirely. "Where do we fall back to?"
Jarek barreled through two rogues, landing beside them. "There’s a ridge up ahead—if we can make it there, we can force them into a bottleneck."
Kian didn’t hesitate. "Fall back to the ridge! Now!"
The order rippled through their ranks, and the warriors fought their way backward, step by agonizing step. Magnus’s forces pursued them relentlessly, sensing their advantage. The retreat was chaotic, but the pack moved with trained precision, ensuring they weren’t entirely overrun.
As they reached the ridge, Jarek and Dorian worked quickly to position their forces. The narrow pass forced Magnus’s warriors into a funnel, limiting their ability to use sheer numbers against them. Arrows rained down from the higher ground, thinning the enemy’s ranks before they could close the distance.
Amara took a steadying breath, standing beside Kian. "This won’t hold forever."
Kian’s eyes were hard, calculating. "It just has to hold long enough."
Then, from the trees below, movement caught Amara’s attention. A new figure emerged from the enemy’s ranks—a towering presence in dark armor. The battlefield seemed to still as Magnus himself stepped forward, his piercing gaze scanning the ridge where Kian’s forces held their ground.
Magnus raised a single hand, and the enemy forces halted. A chilling silence settled over the battlefield.
"You fight well," Magnus called out, his voice carrying easily. "But you cannot win. Surrender now, and I will spare those who yield."
Kian stepped forward, his stance unyielding. "We will never bow to you."
Magnus chuckled, shaking his head. "Then you will die."
With a wave of his hand, the attack resumed, this time with renewed fury. The battle was far from over, but now, they faced not just an army—but a warlord who had yet to show his true strength.
