Chapter 44
Chapter 44
KILLIAN'S POV
"Where is she?" I said calmly.
Marcus looked down at the ground, not wanting to meet my eyes. "She was in her cell when we left her, but she's vanished."
"How did she get out? We have them barred with magic."
Marcus was in charge of our guards, so this fell on him, and he could tell I wasn't taking this lightly. "The last thing James remembers is hearing someone singing."
"Someone singing?"
Divinity, the strongest witch we currently had, stepped forward. I had asked her to come with me to meet with Vivian to start teaching her but had been stopped by Marcus with news of Sarah's breakout. "Alpha, I believe I know what happened.”
We both turned towards her. She continued speaking. "It's called a siren's song. A witch can use it to get her victim to do her bidding. Only a powerful witch can learn the song, and it sounds like Sarah used it on James if the last thing he can remember is a song. It usually causes memory loss, except for the song. He should be grateful; it's all she did to him."
I cast a glance at Marcus; based on Sarah's history of messing with people's minds, she was right. "Thank you. Marcus, check on James. Get a patrol out and see if you can track her. Maybe she hasn't gotten far. Divinity, let's get Vivian. We'll continue with our plans. No reason we can't move forward with them."
They both nodded, Marcus, running off to do as I said as Divinity continued toward Vivian's room. I hated to have to tell Vivian that her sister got away. This would put her in danger and probably her friend, Chris. Why would she just run away when her entire plot was to get back at Vivian, and Vivian was here? A sinking feeling in my gut had me suddenly running towards Vivian's room. Divinity ran after me, not asking questions.
Without knocking, I burst inside to see the room empty. Vivian wasn't here. I knew she was gone. She hadn't been at breakfast, which I assumed she'd been sleeping in. I tore the sheets off the bed, pulled them to my nose, and smelled Sarah. She had taken her.
I roared, yelling for a guard. Within a few moments, a guard named Cole came running into the room. "Alpha, what is it?"
"Find her. She's gone."
"Our future Luna? She ran away?"
I threw the covers down. "No. She was taken."
VIVIAN'S POV
I went from being rejected by my mate to dating my high school bully to being imprisoned...twice...all in about a month. While finding out my dad wasn't my dad and that I had a half-sister who hated my guts.
I stared up at the ceiling of my cell. These cells were way less fancy than Killian's. We actually had dirt flooring. There are no magic barriers, either. Greywood was so barbaric in comparison. Ivy twitched at the thought. 'This is your pack.'
Was it though? When had they ever really treated me like one of their own? They all rejected me when I got rejected, except for Chris and Caleb. Now Alpha Zade had imprisoned me. Who knew what was next?
A creaking door brought me out of my self-pity party, and footsteps came near. Maybe it was lunchtime now. I sat up, brushing the dirt out of my hair, in time to see Zeke standing there, his eyes rimmed in red, his face etched in sadness and fury.
"Hey, Zeke. I didn't think you'd come and visit me. But I'm glad you came."
"Glad I came?" he spat out.
That was a little dramatic. But okay. "Yeah, it's been a couple of days, and I'm kind of bored. How long is your dad going to keep me here?"
He banged on the bars. "Don't act like you don't know!"
Zero to a hundred. This was escalating very quickly. "Don't know what?"
"My father is dead!"
I froze. Alpha Zade was dead? I had just seen him. He came to my cell just this morning to check on me. I hadn't made any headway about getting out of here sooner, and he seemed fine. "Zeke, what are you talking about? How would I know about that? I've been in here."
Zeke gripped the bars. "Because you killed him."
I stood up fully, stumbling towards Zeke. "You're joking, right? How could I possibly kill your father from my jail cell?"
Zeke scoffed. "I know you're a witch, Vivian. Sam told me all about the black magic you went to learn at Blackmoon."
I placed a hand over my heart, which felt like it was about to burst from my chest. This couldn't be happening. I knew she wanted to ruin my life, but this wasn't just ruining my life. This was ending it. "Zeke, you're joking. You were there with me. You knew everything that happened. You knew why I went."
"I know what you told me and the lies you filled our heads with. But Samantha spoke to Killian, and he filled her in on the truth when she tried to save you from him. But you didn't want to be saved, did you? You wanted to learn more about how you could overthrow Greywood."
"Zeke, please. Samantha is lying to you. She's not even Samantha. Her name is Sarah, and she's my half-sister. She's trying to ruin my life."
He laughed. “Now, you just sound insane. She said you'd come up with some outlandish story, and she was right."
"I'm not making this up! Ask Killian!"
"This is a declaration of war against Blackmoon. You came here on their behalf to kill our Alpha."
"Please don't do this. This was not for them. Do not start a war. Your father would not want this."
"Then what was it for, V?"
"It wasn't for anything! Because I didn't do it!"
He leaned in. "Were you just mad that he imprisoned you? If you admit the truth, I won't have to go to war and risk the lives of everyone. Your move."
I froze. He was giving me a choice. Risk the lives of countless others over Sarah's lies or risk my own. "What happens to me either way?"
"You'll be beheaded."
My stomach dropped. I was going to die. "Where's Chris? He's okay with this?"
"He's just as angry with you as the rest of the pack is."
"You've already told the pack?"
"As the new Alpha, I don't hide things from them."
I knew his aura felt more powerful now. "Look, I respect what you're trying to do, but I didn't kill your father. I don't even know magic. At all."
"Chris saw you use magic."
"That was a fluke."
"You're not winning any points here, Vivian."
I wasn't. "Can...I have some time to think about this...this is a lot..."
Zeke looked into my eyes. "I'll give you 24 hours to decide if you want to confess to acting alone or in tandem with Blackmoon. Anything else, I'll declare war with Blackmoon."
I nodded as Zeke turned abruptly and left. I fell to my knees. Zeke was now my Alpha, my ex-best friend, my ex-mate, and now my soon-to-be executioner.
