Chapter 110

Chapter 110
Rashel woke with all the hairs on her body standing, again. The last time this happened, she had to fight for her and Kael’s lives, but today, she didn’t want to think about it like that. She forced herself into thinking that it was because her body and mind remembered her first wedding and how it ended; it was just wedding jitters. Moreover, the entire perimeter was heavily guarded, and not much could pass without the sensors or the guards raising an alarm or responding immediately.

It wasn’t the kind of wedding where she had bridesmaids or a father to walk her down the aisle, but she had Charlene and Milla help her with her makeup and dress. Rashel’s dress was a purple silk dress that stopped just below her ankles; she didn’t want a train either. Nothing to remind her of her wedding to Seth. Charlene was supposed to walk her down the aisle and hand her to Jethro. The wedding was set to start in one hour, and Rashel already couldn’t wait for it to be over.

“You make such a beautiful bride,” Charlene said softly, with tears welling up in her eyes.

“Don’t go soft on me now, Charlene. No crying today.” Rashel teased.

“I’m so glad that the Alpha finally found someone who loves him. I was scared for him for a moment…” She let her words trail as she let the tears run down her cheeks. “You know, if my son were alive today, he would have had a wife too. I would have made sure of that.” Charlene laughed when she finished speaking, causing Rashel and Milla to laugh.

It was then that they heard the explosion. The first one shook the room they were in, making them fall to the floor, covering their heads as they went down. In a matter of minutes, Jethro was in the room with some of his men. He picked Rashel up as the other men helped Charlene and Milla up, leading them to safety.

“Where’s Kael?” Rashel asked as they made their way out of the room.

“He was in the nursery with Gina. I’ll go check on them now.” Milla said and ran off immediately with two other guards in the direction of Kael’s nursery. When they got to the doorway and met the door wide open, Milla had a feeling that something had gone terribly wrong here.

Regardless of the silence that met them, she still ran into the room to check, but she found no one. The crib was empty, and Gina was nowhere to be found. She checked all the other rooms one after the other, yet she found no sign of either Kael or Gina. Milla was distraught; she knew that the child was Rashel’s life, and she didn’t know what would happen if she found out about this. Still, she had to report back to Rashel and Jethro so that something could be done immediately. As she ran all the way back to the front porch where Rashel stood waiting for her child, Milla said a little prayer for Kael’s safety.

“Where’s Kael?” Rashel asked the moment Milla and her team returned.

“He wasn’t in the room when we got there, Commander.”

“So. Where. Is. He?” Rashel growled.

“He’s not here, ma’am,” Milla said.

“Where the hell is my child!” Rashel growled and tried to run towards the house, but Jethro caught her as she struggled, kicking and screaming.

“Hey, listen to me. Listen to me, baby, calm down, okay? We’re going to find him. We’ll find him, but I need you to get yourself together first, okay?”

Rashel nodded rapidly as she tried to bring her heavy breathing back to normal. When Jethro confirmed that she was calm, he brought her down and let her stand on her feet, but he didn’t let go of her.

“Milla, I need you to gather a team and find out exactly what happened here. I’ll be with you in a minute. Charlene, I need a change of clothes for her.”

Jethro led her to her east wing office and set her on a chair, then he knelt in front of her, trying to pacify her. Rashel was an absolute mess; she had stopped being hysterical, but she was crying silently. All her makeup was messed up now, and she just looked crazy.

“I’m going to find Kael, even if it’s the last thing I do.”

“But who could have done this? I do—”

“Shh… I’m going to find them, and when I do, they will be sorry they touched my child. But first, I need you to pull yourself together. Once Charlene gets here and you’ve cleaned up, we’ll go find our son.”

Rashel nodded as a fresh stream of tears flooded her face; the wedding had been long forgotten in her mind at that moment. Jethro’s phone rang suddenly, breaking the silence in the room. He checked the screen to see that it was Captain Ivan, the commander of the prison guards, calling. It was a strange call, as the man had never called him before, but maybe he wanted to congratulate him on his wedding. How pathetic it would be to break the news that his wedding had ended before it even began.

“Hello, Captain.” Jethro greeted when he answered the phone.

“Good morning, Alpha. There’s been a big problem. There was an explosion last night, two in fact, and your—uh—your ex-fiancé has escaped.”

“What! How did something like that happen?” Jethro demanded.

“I’m so sorry; we did all we could to find her and the other four who escaped, but we couldn’t. I just need you to be careful. We’ve alerted the city to be on the watch and are hoping to get them as soon as possible.”

“Thank you, captain. Although I fear that the danger has already been done. Good luck.” Jethro ended the call as soon as she finished speaking and found Rashel staring expectantly at him.

“What happened? Have they found him?” she asked sharply.

“Rashel, Veronica escaped from prison last night,” Jethro said as calmly as possible, and watched Rashel. He saw her face shift from anxious to confused in seconds.

“How did that happen?” She whispered.

“There were explosions at the facility, and she made it out with four others. Captain Ivan called to warn us.”

“Do you—do you think she might have…” Rashel let her voice trail. Jethro understood what she was saying, but he didn’t have an answer to her question. He could think of a couple of people who might have had a hand in this besides Veronica. Viola, Seth, Merikh, and Dorian. Veronica’s escape might have just been a coincidence, but it wasn’t impossible that she would be responsible.

The problem was where to start. Without evidence, it would be hard to take any of them into custody; it would mean war, and they weren’t in the right frame of mind or capacity to take on a fight at the moment. Nobody had even called yet to say they had Kael. Charlene finally returned with a change of clothes for Rashel, and Jethro left her briefly to find Milla and find out what happened.

He found Milla by the gate; she had changed into her uniform and was shouting orders into her receiver. She paused when she saw him.

“Milla, I need a situation report.”

“We were compromised, Alpha. One of the guards led them into the house to take Kael while there was confusion. He created a diversion so they passed without being seen. But he died before we could get more out of him. Poison.”

“That’s okay. The CCTV footage will help us identify them or the vehicle used.”

“That’s the problem, sir; the explosion ravaged the control systems for the security footage, and we cannot retrieve anything. We have to install a new set.”

“Anything else?”

“We do know that they took Gina as well. But I sent men on a search party immediately I got here. I have radioed some other security agencies to help in a stop and search operation. Just in case. Now, we await your orders.”

“Well done, Milla. I need you to be on standby; I will communicate with you shortly. I need to get Rashel first.”

Jethro sprinted all the way back to the east wing, where he found Rashel sitting quietly and staring into nothingness. She had changed into a pair of combats and a combat; she had on a pair of boots, and her hair was held in a bun behind her head. She also held her gun in her hand. That scared look had left her face and was replaced with an intense stare. Even though Jethro was happy she had snapped out of her tears, he was afraid of the chaos Rashel could cause like this.

“Rashel, are you sure you can do this? It’s fine if you’d rather stay home.”

“Let’s get going, Jethro. I will fight right beside you. If you’re laying down your life for Kael, then there should be someone laying theirs down for you.”
