Chapter Forty Two
Chapter Forty Two
KAIDA'S POV
The pack was still reeling from the night's events. It was a new experience for some but those who had experienced it before were moved to tears at the return of the pack's mind link. Several people were testing the new found link. People were reaching out to me just for fun, it was amusing. I knew that for the next twenty-four hours, it was all the pack would think about, that no one would say a word, but rather choose to converse through the mind link.
Suddenly a loud voice yelled through the pack bond. ‘Luna!’ I jumped, startled as Jody bounded towards me. I managed to gather myself just in time to catch the boy as he leapt towards me.
“Jody! I could have dropped you!” I scolded, but my words didn't carry enough bite.
The boy shook his head innocently. ‘Luna Kaida is strong, you wouldn't have dropped me.’ He retorted through the bond. I chuckled. It seemed like even the kids were excited about the link.
‘Where is your sister?’ I asked curiously. I wasn't all that concerned since he was in a safe environment.
The boy pointed towards the residential homes. ‘She's at home. She is testing the distance, to see how far away we can get from each other before the link loses connection.’
I grinned humourously. Kids. 'It will never take a really strong, strong, and strong magic for the link to disconnect.’
The boy looked pleasantly surprised. ‘Really?’
‘Really.’ I responded. “Now, go find your sister.” I said out loud. “And stay safe!” I called after him as he ran off.
The full moon festival came to wrap steadily. People began to disperse one by one. The mated wolves that would be involved in tomorrow's battle were also retiring for the night, to get some alone time with one another before the battle the next day.
I tried to not be overcome by anxiety as I returned to my shared home with Thoran. No one knew what was going to happen tomorrow, Elara was a powerful witch, and it made me worried. Not just for myself but for everyone participating in the battle.
I plopped down on the bed with a sigh. Soon, I sensed Thoran's presence before he spoke. “Seems the pack is having a lot of fun with the link.” He commented as he pulled me into his arms.
“They are.” I answered pleasantly. “And it's all thanks to you.” I pointed out, placing a soft kiss on his cheek.
Thoran's gaze turned solemn. “I know I gave the speech but your presence in the pack set things in motion.”
I was surprised at the sincerity in his words. “I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit, Thoran. I'm sure the pack would have come around sooner or later.”
Thoran shook his head. “No, Luna mine. I would have abandoned my role as Alpha. I had pretty much already given up on the pack.” He explained. “Until you came along. You made life worth living. Before you, my life was bleak and l was simply existing and going through the motions. You changed that. So this peace we're experiencing is only thanks to you.”
My throat clogged up, as a wave of emotions filled me. His words had me fighting back tears. “Thank you, Thoran.” I choked out. “That means a lot to me. Meeting you has also been the highlight of my life. I know we didn't always see eye to eye. We clashed a few times. But everything we've been through has brought us to this moment, so I have no regrets.” I said sincerely. “Whatever happens tomorrow, I'm grateful to the moon goddess for bringing us this far.”
Thoran frowned slightly. “Don't think that way, Luna mine. We have an army. The pack also grew a lot stronger today. We will prevail against our enemies tomorrow.” He said with certainty. I rested against him, hearing his steady breathing, but my mind wouldn’t stop racing. Tomorrow, everything could change. It was impossible to relax with so much at stake.
Thoran tried to comfort me as much as he could while I tried to focus on the earlier happiness that I felt with the pack but as time went on, the pack mates grew apprehensive about the war. The negative emotions of some of the packmates were beginning to influence the others. Thoran sighed. ‘Do not panic. That's what the enemy wants. The moon goddess is on our side. The blessing we received from her is a testament to that fact. Get some rest, we have a long day ahead of us.’ The pack seemed to feel a lot better with his words.
I snuggled into Thoran's chest as we laid down to rest for the night. His words had not only calmed the pack. He had calmed me as well. I slept peacefully that night, and I could feel Thoran relax as we slept as well.
We woke up at dawn the next morning, as everyone prepared to set off for our respective targets. The groups separated themselves into two as we initially planned. The warriors were fully armed, and everyone put on their magical suits. These suits would still be equipped even after shifting from wolf form to human form.
Just as we were about to leave, Meena approached me. “Meena, is something wrong?”
The healer shook her head. “No, Luna. There's something I want to give to you.” She took out a wrapped item from her coat and handed it over to me.
“What's this?” I asked curiously.
“A dagger infused with pure magic.” She explained as I unwrapped the dagger and held it up, the reflection of the moon caused it to glow. “After what happened to the Nyx pack, I started looking into dark magic and how to fight it. Last night, I got an idea. I'll spare you the gory details but if you stab this dagger into any object or human with sinister magic, it'll absorb all of the darkness. This should give us an edge against Elara.”
I shot her a grateful smile before embracing her briefly. “Thanks for this, Meena. This is going to be a huge help against Elara.”
Meena smiled warmly. “It's the least I could do, after my failure to save your mother.”
“It was not your fault. I have never blamed you for it. Elara is to blame, and I will make sure she faces justice.” I said firmly.
Meena nodded in understanding before moving to stand with Zarek's group, while Henry joined ours. Once both groups were gathered, we left for our destination. Thoran took my hand as soon as I caught up with him.
