Chapter 82. The Buried Mystery

Chapter 82. The Buried Mystery
The Buried Mystery
Annabelle's POV

Thunderstorms  struck loudly just immediately Mira said those words.

I looked at her only realizing how deepened my confusion was.
How could she say she lost her way? She's spent so many months in our pack already and should have mastered all the roads in the city.

Well, I didn't argue with her but just acted up as though I didn't know a thing.

Two hours have slipped past now yet the rain has refused to stop. I didn't plan to sleep over in our pack. I made all of that known to Alpha also but the rain just ruined everything.

Alpha’s life is more important to me than anything else.

If I don't get the Moonleaf herb today, then my journey has become a futile one.

Alpha doesn't believe in my ability since he has never seen me practice medicine. This was my only chance. I can't disappoint him now.

“ Please pass me the dishes” Mira's voice echoed and I jerked from my thoughts.

I collected the dishes from its rank and handed them to Mira.

Lunch was ready and I couldn't just wait to eat one of those delicious crabs Mira had prepared.

I helped her set the table and when dad woke up and saw me in his house, he became shocked.

“Annabelle? What are you doing here?” He asked me, surprise etching in his features.

I put the dishes down and walked towards him for a warm hug.

“This is my house, Dad. I can come in anytime I want” I said,  curling myself around him like a baby.

“You’re wrong Annabelle” he pulled me gently from his arms. “ Alpha Ashton's chambers Is your home. You only visit us by his permission” Dad corrected and I just laughed and rolled my eyes.

“Actually dad, I came to get some leaves for medicine but the rain has been a nuisance”

Dad laughed, walking back to the table. “ You came all this far just to get leaves? Are you sure about that or you just missed your family”

“You don't believe me? It's really important” I tried to be serious to  make dad  understand the fact that I didn't just run home for nothing important.
“ So what kind of leave is that?” He demanded.

“Some leave because of pain—muscle pain. Alpha has been complaining for a while now and I feel helpless already”  I complained and Dad hugged me.
We sat at the table and while we ate lunch together, I kept wishing the rain would just stop pouring but it seems I was hoping for the impossible.

We ate in silence for a while and then my mind flashed back to the horsemen we encountered a few hours ago in the forest. I should tell my dad before it slips my mind.
Rising my head, my eyes met with dad's gaze. He seemed to be enjoying the meal like the rest of us.

’’Dad, is anything happening in the pack? We saw some foreigners on horses, storming inside the city some hours ago.” I revealed and everyone narrowed their eyes to me as though what I was saying sounded strange to their ears.

“ Foreigners? Where did you see them  and what do they look like?” Dad asked after swallowing the bolus in his mouth.

“They were coming from nowhere in the forest. Their scent is  different though  I didn't see what they looked like because of the dark cloud” I try  to explain but dad seems even more confused with all that I was saying.

“That’s true, Beta” The guard  who sat on the table with us supported, his words dripping with clarity. “ Those men are foreigners and probably, one of them must be really familiar with this pack. If not, they would have gone through the city road instead of  sneaking inside the pack”

“That’s my point. They don't look like people who are here for peace. I smell danger, dad.” I chipped.

Dad was just about to say something when Mira interrupted.

“Then, Dad must vacate the pack to somewhere safer” Mira, out of nowhere interjected, her contribution somewhat off.

Everyone's eyes shifted to Mira, and I couldn't help but wonder if she had ever been listening to us or if she just says anything she likes.

“This isn't about Dad but the pack, Mira” I calmly corrected.

“ We’re saying the  same thing. You and dad must vacate this place before tomorrow.” Mira's voice was firm, lacing with warnings.

She wasn't arguing with any of us. She just made her point and continued with her food like she had said nothing.

Dad’s scowled. “ Why are you always sounding like a soothsayer with no clarity, Mira?” He asked, somehow bitter about Mira's carelessness with words.

Mira didn't apologize. She didn't argue either but concentrated more on her meal.

I looked at her and felt pity for her. I have no idea why her personality and nature is just full of confusion and complications. No one seems to ever take her words seriously.

Just like she had mentioned about victory and bitterness to me earlier and I had overlooked it, calling it some dry sarcasm instead.

Narrowing my eyes back to dad who could not seem to tolerate Mira anymore, my voice lowered.

“ Dad, Mira is only making a point. Everyone has the right to their opinion” I tried to Soften dad's heart towards Mira. But it didn't work out.

“Not everything is worth saying. That's why we're to keep quiet when it isn't important” Dad corrected and angrily filled his glass with water.

Mira gave a soft chuckle as if dad was spewing trash or not making any sense.

I sighed, trying to make peace. “It’s okay. This is just a piece of information, it shouldn't —”

“You can't change what has been written about me. You all see me as a  mentally deranged person so, stop defending me already.” Her sharp voice cracked, although she didn't seem angry or anything.

She rose up, cleared her dishes and began walking towards the kitchen and I followed her immediately.
