63. I Can't Do That
Now here I finally am, doing what I needed to do for all their sakes, Benji’s, Shane’s, Derek’s parents, but most of all, Derek.
I quickly take out the container and get the syringe ready to extract the liquid.
“What are you doing?”
I nearly jump out of my skin, making me nearly poke myself with the needle, at the sound of Benji’s voice just behind me. Swinging around I see him sitting in the chair that was there in the corner of the room.
Shit, I didn’t even see him there!
He stares at me with eyes that held suspicion, then he looks down at what was in my hand. On instinct I quickly hid the vile and syringe behind me, making it completely obvious I was hiding something from him. Not to mention I was here in Derek’s room, hovering over him doing weird things.
Yeah, way to go Safina on making yourself look innocent in his eyes.
“I’m going to ask again, what are you doing?” His tone has changed to being defensive.
I mean he caught me trying to do something to his mate after all. Couldn’t really blame him for being highly overprotective right now. He slowly stands up and walks towards me, only making me back away from him.
“What is that in your hand, Safina?” He tries to peek behind me now.
Well, damn. How am I possibly going to get him to act like he didn’t see anything or to just forget what he was seeing just now?
I don’t, that’s how. I wouldn’t be able to keep this from him, regardless if he was a Blue Silver or not. Besides, he had the right to know what I was giving his mate.
Sighing in defeat, I bring the cure back in front of me and show him. He looks down at the syringe and scowls without bothering to touch it.
“What the hell is that and why the fuck are you giving it to him?” He growls angrily.
Okay, I totally deserved that tone of voice. “It’s a cure.”
An eyebrow nearly reaches his hairline with a look of total disbelief.
“A cure? This disease was just found a day ago, something you haven’t even seen with your own two eyes, and yet you have a cure for it?”
“I know, I know! It sounds really crazy, but I’m telling you the truth. It’s why I haven’t been answering any of your calls or texts. It’s because I was somewhere out there in the forest…”
I wasn’t sure telling him everything was the right move. At least not yet.
“Benji, I can’t exactly tell you where I have been, not yet, but please believe me that this will save Derek’s life.”
“Then why don’t you just give it to Dr. Starlite to give to him? Why are you doing it?” He crosses his arms over his chest, not seeming to be happy with my explanation.
“I can’t do that.”
“But if it’s a cure, then she’ll need it to stop what’s happening to the forest.”
I shake my head before he stops speaking. “There’s no time. Derek needs this now and if I give it to her she’ll want to run tests on it and who knows how long that will take. Do you seriously want Derek to keep suffering for that long, when he can get cured now?”
I can see the raging indecision burning in his eyes of what to do. I knew he didn’t fully trust me right now. He had suspicions, questions, and even doubts about what was happening at the moment. But was he willing to risk his mate’s health just to do what he thought was right?
“Fine, but if anything happens to him that makes that shit worse, you’re never stepping out of this room alive. I like you Safina, I really do, but when it comes to him nothing stands in the way of that, understand?”
I quickly nod my head. “I promise Benji. I would never do anything that would hurt you.” I whisper.
He gives a curt nod and stands next to me as we both watch as the liquid mixes into the IV and straight to his bloodstream. We stand there waiting for long minutes to see what would happen. Derek’s breathing suddenly hitches as if it was going to stop, causing Benji to snatch my arm tightly with wide fearful eyes.
I didn’t bother to cry out at the pain his grip was giving me, but then Derek’s breathing calms down again in a soft relaxing sigh and we watch transfixed as the horrible ugly veins on his neck, shoulder and chest start to shrivel and the poison begins to leak out of the wound on his back.
“Holy shit, it’s working.” Benji lets me go and gets closer to his mate, watching as the veins begin to disappear.
It was like this giant weight was finally lifted from the room as tears just fell from his eyes. I go to back away when I’m suddenly pulled back and gripped in his embrace. He held onto me tightly as his body shook.
“I’m not going to question you right now, but…thank you.” His voices wavers from the emotional tears.
All I could do was hug him back, since the thanks shouldn’t really go to me, but to my people, especially a fourteen year old genius that I was so proud of right now.
I needed to get out of here, but I first needed to make him understand that the cure was from him, not me. How was I going to convince him though? He’ll wonder why I didn’t want his pack doctor to know of it. Then he was really going to be suspicious of me.
He lets me go and wipes his face and then surprises me by saying, “We should get out of here before anyone else shows up and definitely before he awakens.”
Not letting me comprehend on why, he grabs my hand and together we get the hell out of there.
