41. To Keep You Safe
Third Person POV
Raghorn, report to me at once.
Spencer mind linked one of the head sentinels. He stood staring out of the large, foot to ceiling, windows, overlooking the front of the mansion and beyond to the outer walls of the compound. After only ten minutes of waiting, a knock sounds on the door.
“Enter.”
The door opens to reveal a tall, lean man in his forties. “You called for me, Alpha?” He stands to attention, just as he was trained to do in the presence of a higher rank.
“Hazel Rockwell. Do you know her?” He turns to face the man.
“Vaguely, sir. She’s the one that went missing for a couple days, correct?” He frowns in thought.
“Yes, I need you to keep a close eye on her. Have no more than two of your men to keep track of her whereabouts. There’s something off about that one.”
“Of course, Alpha.” He goes to turn away but then stops, “If I may ask, why do you want us to keep tabs on her for? Is she a threat to Blue Silver?”
“Shifted eyes.” He mumbles mainly to himself.
“I’m sorry sir? I didn’t quite catch that.”
Spencer looks at him with a look of suspicion. “She had shifted eyes last night, when she felt threatened on Shane’s behalf. She wasn’t in wolf form.”
The sentinel looked a bit disturbed. “I’m not sure how exactly she can have shifted eyes when only…”
“Alphas can do it. Exactly. She’s not a blood relative of an alpha, yet she can do it. I need to know why and how that’s possible.”
Spencer crosses his arms in more thought. “One more thing. Set up an announcement to the public on a disciplinary action to be had the day after tomorrow. First thing in the morning.”
“And what is the punishment that is being performed?”
“Fifty silver lashings.” He says off handily as he sits at his desk seeming to be lost in thinking.
“That’s…pretty old fashion, but I’ll get it prepared in time.” He bows his head and leaves the room.
As he sat there he thought about what had occurred last night and the happenings of the meeting that just passed. Marcus had been highly upset at the mention of something he thought the red haired boy had called the girl. Also, they had been coming from the direction of Night Stone.
Frowning deeply, he knew there was something not right, but couldn’t seem to grasp it. Shifted eyes, something the kid said that freaked Marcus out, and Night stone. Turning his chair around to face the window again he watches as Shane and Hazel seeming to be arguing as they left the grounds of the mansion.
“What are you hiding, young lady?” He whispers.
Safina
“What the hell Shane?! Why did you do that? I have no problem taking the punishment.”
I was angry and upset with him for taking my place. And to make matters much worse he refuses to tell me what the punishment was. Was it bad? Is it so horrendous that he was willing to risk himself for my sake and not tell me what it is? I don’t understand why!
We were walking out of the mansion grounds and his strides were fast and long, making it hard for me to keep up with him. When we pass the school grounds I was getting fed up with his silence.
“Damn it Shane! Stop ignoring me and talk to me!” I grab his arm, ignoring the thousands of sensations of pleasure from the touch of our skin has caused, forcing him to turn and face me.
I stop when I see the look on his face. I wasn’t sure on how to describe it, but it made me feel like my heart has sunk to the bottom of my feet. He looked sad, yet determined as well. Nothing I say will get him to change his mind. He was dead set on it.
“Let me explain something to you Hazel. I took your place because the thought of you getting hurt in any way, causes me to panic. I can’t explain this feeling I keep having around you that I need to protect you no matter what, regardless of who I’m protecting you from.”
He takes a step closer, causing my entire body to thump with the sound of my rising heartbeat.
“All I want to do is to keep you safe.” He gently says, his voice sending shivers down my spine. “I’m not upset for taking your place from you, so you shouldn’t be either.”
With that he smiles tenderly and starts walking away. I was at a loss for words. No matter how much I wanted to hate him, resent him or ignore him, it seems I just can’t and that notion weighs heavily on my shoulders.
