Chapter 50

The second day of celebrations dawned with a very different tone than the first. Gone was the buoyant atmosphere of the previous day, replaced by the solemnity and formalities that came with the responsibilities of leadership. The palace had transformed from a place of revelry into a bastion of duty, and I could feel the weight of expectation pressing down on me as I prepared to face the day.

The throne room, a grand and imposing space with high ceilings and ornate decorations, was filled with an air of anticipation. Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows, casting colorful patterns on the marble floors, but even the beauty of the room couldn't dispel the sense of gravity that accompanied the proceedings. Today, I would be listening to a series of marriage proposals, each delivered by emissaries and nobles who had traveled from far and wide to make their case in person.

I really don’t want to fucking do this part. Can Callum just propose and we call it good? I will not be marrying anyone but him. If this last year has taught me anything, it’s that I choose my fate. I have a surprise for Callum at the end of the celebrations in 2 days.

I sat upon the throne, its grandeur a symbol of power and duty, with Callum and Ageis flanking me as my trusted advisors and guardians. Their presence was a comfort in the midst of the formalities, their support a steadying force as I prepared to navigate the intricate dance of diplomacy and alliance-building.

As the first emissary was announced, I took a deep breath, reminding myself of the importance of this day. Each proposal carried with it the potential to forge alliances and strengthen ties, but also the risk of entanglements that could complicate our kingdom's future. It was a delicate balance, one that required careful consideration and discernment. It is a shame I will not actually be choosing any of them.

The emissary approached with measured steps, bowing deeply before presenting his lord's proposal. His words were eloquent, outlining the benefits of a union between our houses with practiced precision. I listened intently, my expression neutral as I weighed the merits of the offer. Callum and Ageis remained silent, their presence a reminder that I was not alone in this decision-making process.

As the emissary concluded, I offered a polite but noncommittal response, thanking him for his presentation and assuring him that I would give the proposal due consideration. It was a response I would repeat many times over the course of the day, as each emissary came forward with their own carefully crafted pitch.

Between proposals, I allowed myself brief moments to glance at Callum and Ageis, drawing strength from their unwavering support. Callum's steady gaze was a reminder of the personal connection we shared, a grounding force amidst the political complexities. Ageis, with her keen intellect and perceptive nature, offered silent counsel, her presence a testament to the deep trust we had built over the years.

As the morning wore on, I found myself slipping into a rhythm, each proposal blending into the next with a predictable cadence. Yet, despite the repetition, I remained vigilant, acutely aware of the significance of each decision and the potential impact on our kingdom's future.

The room was filled with a hushed anticipation, the courtiers and dignitaries gathered to witness the proceedings. It was a reminder of the scrutiny I was under, the expectations that came with my role as queen. But I was determined to approach each proposal with an open mind, to weigh the possibilities with fairness and integrity.

Throughout the day, I encountered a variety of suitors, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Some proposals were straightforward, offering clear benefits in terms of resources and alliances. Others were more complex, their motivations less transparent, requiring a deeper level of analysis and discernment. Not one of them based on mutual respect or even a connection.

In the midst of these deliberations, I found myself reflecting on the nature of leadership and the responsibilities it entailed. It was not enough to simply wield power; I had to use it wisely, with an eye towards the greater good of my people. However, I was going to change this tradition for birthdays moving forward. Who wants to hear about marriage and alliances on your birthday for fuck’s sake?

As the afternoon sun began to dip lower in the sky, the final emissary was announced. His proposal was one of the most promising, offering an alliance that could significantly bolster our kingdom's position. Yet, despite the allure of the offer, I remained cautious, aware of the potential pitfalls that accompanied such arrangements.

With the formalities concluded, I rose from the throne, the weight of the day's proceedings heavy on my shoulders. Callum and Ageis flanked me as we made our way out of the throne room, the echoes of the proposals still resonating in my mind.

We retreated to a private chamber, where we could discuss the day's events in greater detail. As the door closed behind us, I turned to Callum and Ageis, grateful for their unwavering support and insight.

"Thank you both for being by my side today," I said, my voice carrying a note of exhaustion but also gratitude. "Your presence made all the difference." I collapsed onto a nearby couch, my body sore from sitting on the throne all day. How the fuck did my mom and dad do this all the fucking time?

Callum offered a reassuring smile, his eyes filled with understanding. "Val, you handled it beautifully. Each proposal was a testament to your strength and wisdom."

Ageis nodded in agreement, her expression thoughtful. "Indeed, Your Majesty. You've shown tremendous poise and discernment. The decisions you make will shape the future of our kingdom."

“Yes, yes they will,” I mutter under my breath. I cannot wait to make Callum a Royal, so that I could marry him. He already earned a title for all of his service as is, so no one will question it in the end.
