30. The Glykons Escaped
**Denis**
"What was that for?" Denis asked as soon as Rosè left them alone. Maybe he shouldn't have said that, because Alpha Christen looked at him like he lost his mind.
"Funny of you to say. Open your ears and ask me that again."
Denis began to argue when he heard something. Chatter? Deciding to listen to hs father, he listened. No, not chatter. Screams.
He cupped his left ear to try and pick up on what was going on. "Dad, something's up. We need to go check it out."
"I already did. People have shifted and have to fight off glykons because of a mistake *you* made!"
Denis' temper rised to the surface. "Are you accusing me when they need us to make encure it gets taken care of? I did everything right! There's absolutely no way they would have escaped."
"You didn't feed them the anesthetic!" Christen yelled. The power of an alpha seeped into his tone. Denis had no choice but to keep his head bowed.
"I did, but even if I didn't, they wouldn't be able to escape that easily."
"Let me tell you. It's so simple. Do you know what you fed them instead?"
One more time he wanted to say that he did not make a mistake, but he held it in and asked, "What?"
"Sugar!" Christen flung his arms in the air. "You fed them bloody white sugar instead! It made them more energetic and they rattled the lock on the lid of their cage until it broke!"
"I didn't..."
"Why not give them a cupcake while you're at it? How many times must I tell you, Denis? Do. Not. Give. Fairy. Animals. Sugar!"
"Da-Alpha, I swear it wasn't me."
"Who else could it be? I went there to check it myself. The ventilation machine, the cabinets. It was your scent that I picked up! Goddess, am I glad that I talked Melissa out of having a third child. If I left him in your care, you probably would have messed that up too."
The noises faded as Denis played the last thing his father said over and over again in his mind. Denis turned around and trotted towards the packhouse, where most of the commotion came from. He felt tempted to run, but he restrained himself.
"Where are you going?!" Alpha Christen yelled.
Blood rushed to his head and he bit his lip to hold back the thoughts he wanted to say. "I'm going to get a read on the situation."
The alpha huffed. "Beta Avon and the gretas have it handled."
Denis ignored him and carried on.
Dried leaves crunched under his white sneakers. The scent of fresh blood made him break into a run. Wolves were running down the hill by the time he got past the cafeteria. When he arrived at the packhouse, he saw what he only could describe as a mass panic.
A light grey wolf had the tail of one of the glykons in their mouth as it latched on to the leg of a pack member who was hugged a tree for dear life.
Gretas held down a glykon while Beta Avon, nicknamed Beta, placed a tiny muzzle inside its mouth.
Three glykons hissed and slithered at the front door of the house. Dr. Nelson stood on the trail with two small children in hand, watching it unfold with worry in her brown eyes.
A couple of wolves chased a fae creature that slithered away from them at top speed. When Denis glanced back to the packhouse, he noticed that there were two instead of three at the entrance. He located the missing one trying to break the window on the second floor with its head. The people watching from inside began to back away. The window started to crack.
Denis extended his claws and ran to the building. He bolted past Beta, who took his eyes off the captured glykon to watch. He jumped onto the side wall and buried his nails into its wood. He pulled his body up until he got to the single pane window that the creature continued to assult.
He placed his foot on a ledge and tried to inch closer. Slowly, it stopped. It tilted its head so that its mouth was pointing to the roof.
Suddenly, the glykon spun to face Denis and lunged at him in a split second. The action took Denis so off guard that he fell from the ledge while grabbing at it. He ended up on the ground, hitting his head in the process. Thankfully, there was only dirt and leaves. And a glykon that bit between his wrist and pinkie.
He wrapped his fingers around its neck, managing to fit it in his hand, and pulled. Killing them was out of the question. But if he had to, he would.
All he achieved was a view of its full row of teeth hooked inside his flesh. He could feel its tongue licking newly drawn blood.
Denis clenched his jaw to keep from groaning in pain. The glykons at the door must have smelt his blood, because they began coming over.
He changed his strategy, choosing instead to press into its yellow eyes. It twisted its body and hissed, eventually releasing his hand. He immdiately got up and licked his wound, holding the glykon firmly in the other hand. He braced himself for the others but a greta wolf and omega wolf each held them down on the neck with both their paws. Denis sighed.
"Thank you, guys."
They nodded. A few other werewolves appeared and placed a muzzle in their mouths. A fourth one appeared by Denis' side. She carefully retrieved his and brought it over to the others.
Denis checked his wound. It was starting to heal. He glanced around the area and counted the number of glykons captured.
Two... five... seven accounted for.
Where's the eighth one?
Denis stepped into the center of the yard. He searched for something, anything that could give him a clue of its location.
Suddenly, his muscled tensed. An unknown precense ruffled the grass. He turned around.
The eighth glykon raised itself to his height. Its slit ruby eyes glared with muderous intent. The girth of its body outgrew Denis' fist. Light from the setting sun caused pale pink scales to develop a bright honey glow. It hissed and unlocked its jaws. A full set of slightly curved teeth rose from bloodstained gums.
Denis knew that this creature had to have drank a lot of blood to grow to this size. "Shit," he muttered. Denis dodged the glykon's first attack and created enough space between them for him to feel less threatened. Beta stepped forward but Denis stopped him by lifting his arm, pupils never moving off the reptillion carnivore.
He dropped on all fours and shifted. His black T-shirt and sweat pants couldn't handle the change, so they tore at the seams.
Dark fur sprouted from his skin. A bone protruded at his lower spine and continued until it formed a tail. Hazel eyes transformed into amber in a blink. His hands turned into fat, hairy paws. He could smell better than in human form. His canines grew past his bottom lip.
The glykon attacked a second time but Denis' wolf was faster. As soon as it lowered its face he hit its head with his extended claws. The fresh wound under its left eye distracted it long enough for Denis' wolf, Zohan, to hurriedly sink his fangs into its neck.
