Chapter 66 THE ORACLE
Edeline
We sat there for what felt like an eternity, and I found myself opening up to her. I told her everything—how Percival brought Tatiana back into the picture, turning my world upside down. How she's Nixx’s mate and my hunch that she’s not really an Alpha’s daughter.
"Wow, what a witch!" Mirabelle exclaimed, her reaction making me laugh. It was funny because Z had given Tatiana the same nickname.
"Yeah, well, just wait until you meet her in person," I sighed, getting up to load our plates into the dishwasher. Finally getting something to eat had done me some good, and having Mirabelle here made it easier to relax. My wolf, eager to connect with her, was practically bouncing around inside me, excited to be reunited with a trusted friend.
Mirabelle casually hopped up, grabbing her purse as she sauntered over to the kitchen island. "Hey, I gotta check in with the oracle, but I wanted to swing by here first. Catch you tomorrow, alright? I’m feeling pretty jet-lagged, so I’m gonna take it easy for the rest of the day." It was hard to believe how much she’d changed—from a tall, skinny brunette to the confident, voluptuous blonde standing before me.
I grinned, pulling her into one last hug as she headed for the door.
"Hey, Mirabelle, one more thing," I called out, making her pause and turn back to me, curiosity in her eyes.
"Tatiana hangs out with the oracle..."
With a mischievous grin, she shot back, "Not for long!" She playfully closed the door behind her, leaving with the same confident energy she’d arrived with.
A smile lingered on my face as I imagined the trouble Mirabelle would inevitably stir up now that she was back. It was good to have her around again—something to look forward to in the midst of all this chaos.
A noise from upstairs caught my attention, followed by the unmistakable sound of Nixx’s heavy footsteps coming down the stairs. He walked with such force that I was often amazed he didn’t crash right through the floor.
"So, Mirabelle's back, huh?" he smirked, flashing a friendly grin. Mirabelle had harbored a major crush on Nixx before she was sent away to school, which probably explained why he hadn’t made an appearance earlier. He’d never shown much interest in her before, but now, seeing how she’d changed, he might just be interested.
“Oh man, you should have seen her! She looks absolutely wild!” I couldn’t help but let a smirk slip onto my face as I watched Nixx. “Seriously, she’s changed so much over the years. Blonde hair, curves, tattoos… she’s got it all. It’s pretty amazing, I have to say.”
Nixx paused, clearly lost in thought for a moment before he shrugged it off. “I can’t believe it. Oh, by the way, there’s something I wanted to tell you.” He wandered into the kitchen while I stayed put on the counter, munching on a banana and waiting patiently.
“Hey, just between us, I’d prefer to keep Tatiana in the dark about her dad’s upcoming meeting with Alpha William. I have a hunch he won’t reach out to her, so let’s keep this under wraps, okay? Also, did you see that mischievous glint in his eye?” I couldn’t suppress my grin. It was clear he was getting to her. “I understand.”
Nixx grabbed a bottle of water and headed out, leaving without a word about where he was going.
Taking advantage of the empty house, I decided it was a good time to head up to the treehouse and drop off the letter for Percival. The rain had finally stopped, but the sky was still thick with clouds. It was one of those gloomy days with dark clouds hanging low, hinting at more rain. I made my way across the backyard and up the slope toward the cliffs. With every step, the mud on the path clung to the soles of my flip-flops, making my feet dirty. I sighed, slipped off my flip-flops, and continued up the mountainside with them swinging in my hand.
When I finally reached the summit, I found my special spot and let out a deep breath. The anxious feeling in my stomach had eased. My heart felt calm and steady for the first time in a while. From up here, the pack house looked tiny, and I could see some pack members having a playful mud fight by the lake. They looked like little specks from this high up. I felt absolutely amazing.
I dipped my feet into the stream, letting the water wash the mud off my flip-flops. Looking up at the clouds, I watched as they drifted lazily, letting slivers of sunlight peek through. “Hey, check it out!” I spotted a rainbow shimmering in the distance.
With a grin, I headed towards the forested area behind the cliff. Stepping carefully through the damp clovers, I made my way to the secret treehouse nestled among the trees. Climbing up into the treehouse, I checked our cubbyhole but found no letter waiting for me.
I left my letter feeling a bit let down.
“Hey there, it’s our first time chatting!” I wrote. “I wouldn’t normally continue like this, but I needed to let him know what I found out about Tatiana. I’ve got this uneasy feeling in my gut that something bad is going to happen soon, you know? Just wanted to keep you in the loop.”
After I placed the piece of wood over the hole, I took a quick look around the room. My eyes landed on the mattress where we’d spent so much time together. A rush of excitement bubbled up in my stomach as I remembered all the fun we’d had—maybe even the stuff we probably shouldn’t have done. But honestly? I didn’t regret any of it. Not right now, anyway.
Just as I was about to leave, the hatch suddenly swung open, making me jump in surprise. Percival’s face appeared, and his eyes widened when he saw me. My heart started pounding in my chest.
