Chapter 157 CLAUSTROPHOBIC DESCENT

Chapter 157 CLAUSTROPHOBIC DESCENT
Edeline

As I ventured further, the temperature dropped, and the cave grew darker. It was pitch black, making it nearly impossible to see. I stumbled and fell, hitting the ground with a thud. My heart raced as I lay there, catching my breath. When I finally got up, I found myself in another cavernous room, even darker than the last.

How had Anita found this place? It made no sense.

I crawled on my hands and knees, brushing dirt off my hands onto my pants. The distant sound of a waterfall hinted that it might be close. With a mix of hope and dread, I continued forward, extending my hands to feel my way in the dark. I needed to find anything that could guide me.

The darkness was suffocating. I felt claustrophobic and lost, unsure of which direction to take. My anxiety spiked, and I struggled to calm myself.

After what felt like an eternity, the cave began to lighten slightly. The overwhelming fear eased a bit. I looked up and saw moonlight filtering through a crack in the ceiling. Relief washed over me.

I just had to keep moving. No more panicking. I focused on the faint light ahead, determined to find my way out.

As I stumbled through the cave, I kept bumping into rocks that seemed to blend into the darkness. Each collision made me wince, but I pushed on, determined. The sound of rushing water grew louder with each step, a promising sign that I was getting closer to an exit.

I reached out, my fingers grazing the cold, damp wall of the cave as I followed the sound. Then, through a crack in the gloom, I saw it: a sliver of moonlight shining through just ahead.

Excitement surged through me. I quickened my pace, eager to reach the end of this confounding labyrinth. Turning a corner, the sight before me made my heart leap. A curtain of flowing water cascaded down, illuminated by the soft glow of the full moon. It was stunning, almost surreal.

I let out a sigh of relief, feeling the weight of the chaotic journey lift from my shoulders. I had made it out. The terror and tension that had clung to me seemed to dissipate with the sight of this tranquil scene.

I stepped closer, stretching my hand out into the cool water that flowed gently over the rocks. The sensation was refreshing, soothing after the claustrophobic darkness of the cave. I marveled at how beautiful and serene the world could be.

Anita had been right about one thing; I had ended up exactly where she said I would. But now, I was left questioning her motive.

I was stuck here, with no clear way to continue or escape. Her plan had worked—I couldn't risk leaving and running into trouble. But how was I supposed to find Percival as she had instructed if she had ensured I was trapped?

“Seriously?” I groaned, the frustration evident in my voice. I plopped down onto the cold stone floor and stretched out on my back. I closed my eyes, feeling the exhaustion from the ordeal. The thought of re-entering the dark cave was unbearable, leaving me feeling trapped and defeated.

As I lay there, listening to the soothing sound of the water, something shifted. The splashing changed, as if something had moved beneath it. I jolted upright, a sudden tingling sensation running through me.

To my astonishment, Percival appeared in front of me, drenched from head to toe. He was holding a picnic basket, his shirt clinging to him in a way that seemed both casual and perfectly fitting.

“Oh wow, Anita, you really did it…” I muttered, staring in disbelief.

“Percival?” I exclaimed, my voice filled with shock. Our eyes met, his blue ones reflecting the color of the sky, and for a moment, everything else faded away.

“Hey,” he said, a shy smile tugging at his lips. “I received your letter about meeting up…”

There was some serious splashing going on at the waterfall near the cave entrance. The water was really rushing! Moonlight filtered through, casting a soft glow behind the curtain of falling raindrops and creating shimmering beams of light amidst the shadows.

The scene might have been chill if not for the pounding in my head. My blood felt like it was thumping, my heart racing, and adrenaline coursing through me as I faced the situation. Nervousness and anxiety washed over me in waves.

Looking up at the towering figure before me, I felt a mix of skepticism and awe. He was drenched from the waterfall that had poured down on top of him, and the light shining through the water made his cheekbones look even more defined. His jawline was sharp and striking. If it were not for the electric palpitations coursing through me from the mate bond, I would have still recognized him, even in this lighting.

“Percival!?” I exclaimed, staring at him in shock. I was so surprised to see him here! How did Anita know I would come for Darius tonight? How on earth did she manage to get out of her cell? How did she find out about the cave? How did any of this even happen?

My mind was racing with questions.

He stood in front of the only source of light, looking almost divine. “I got your message to meet you here,” he said, shuffling awkwardly from side to side. I stared at him, completely speechless.

Why is this happening?

With a slight shake of my head, I replied, “Percival, I actually didn’t leave you a message.” I stood up, my voice wavering as I tried to mask my unease. We were standing close, and I could feel his gaze scanning my figure. He looked taken aback, his forehead creasing with confusion.

“… I got a message to meet you here… with food and a list of medicine among other supplies… From you. I got a little worried… I tried to reach your wolf… Edeline, are you okay? Is something up?” He casually placed the basket down and grabbed a lantern. When he turned it on, I was momentarily dazzled by the familiar brightness, and I instinctively covered my face.
