Chapter 35

Chapter 35

Emily changed into a light, white casual suit, holding her phone tucked between her shoulder and ear as she leisurely put her laptop into her computer bag.
The sound of Alfred's voice elicited a cold echoing laugh from Emily. Her tone was deep and chill.
“Is he dead yet?”
“No, he is not”
“If he is not dead, then don't bother calling me. I'm busy and have no time for his madness” Emily said, holding her computer bag in one hand and her phone in the other.
“Wait a minute!”
Emily's brows knitted lightly, and her voice laced with impatience as she exited the room and descended the stairs. “What now?”
“Miss Charles, Mr Callum made it clear before he was hospitalized that I should contact you. He requests that you should reactivate the supplementary card and transfer 7 million dollars”
“Has he realized his mistakes?” Emily suddenly snapped back with a mischievous smile on her lips. The way she responded with so much deliberation caught Alfred by surprise, and he didn't know how to reply to such questions.
“Hmm… Mr Callum hasn't admitted to any of his mistakes” he replied.
“Well, if he hasn't acknowledged his mistakes, he can't expect a penny from me. Inform Victor that he had better return and agree to the signing of the divorce papers, and no more stupid games! My patience is wearing out”
With that, Emily ended the call and erupted into a loud laugh, feeling extremely satisfied with the way things were going.
That son of a gun hasn't suffered enough yet. By the time she would be done with him, he wouldn't even recognise his name.
“Miss Charles, are you heading out?” Evelyn called out of the kitchen as she entered the living room to check on her boss. Her laughter had been so loud that it drew Evenly's attention.
Seeing Emily laughing out of her usual pose, holding her stomach, Evelyn became puzzled.
“Is there a reason for celebration?” Evelyn asked with her brow arched up.
Since the start of the day, there has been a continuous disruption. First, it was Victor's disturbance which was later escalated by his mother and Susan. Who could have handled such turmoil in one day?
Evelyn found herself consciously concerned for Emily especially with Victor's steadfast refusal to accept a divorce.
Just an hour ago, Emily had furiously climbed up the stairs, slamming the door behind her with a resounding thud. Now, she was out, all smiling as if nothing had happened earlier. This left Evelyn wondering about the swift change in her demeanor.
Emily sat on a fancy stool at the entrance, slipping into a pair of black heels as she flashed a smile. “Alfred just called me to inform me that Victor is in the hospital. That's something good to be happy about, isn't it?”
Evelyn was momentarily surprised but then her face lit up with a smile as she nodded, “Indeed it is”
With a twinkle in her eyes, Emily gracefully rose and picked up her computer bag. “I need to handle something down the street, I'll be back for dinner later”
Seeing that Emily was fully dressed for business with her computer bag, Evelyn wisely chose not to probe further and nodded. “Alright Miss Charles”
Emily departed from the villa, pausing briefly at the damaged Iron gate, her brows furrowed as she contemplated hiring a repair service.
It wasn’t a matter of the price that should be paid; the gate could easily be replaced, but this villa has been a special creation by her parents for her, and changing the gate would strip away some of that sentimental value.
With that in mind, Emily crossed the street to the neighbouring villa.
As the gate swung open, Fred, seeing Emily approaching, paused, and then greeted her with a welcoming smile, “Miss Charles, what a pleasant surprise. Are you here to see Mr Waylen?”
Since she was counting on Fred for a treatment later, Emily responded with a polite smile pushing away any signs of arrogance.
“Yes, I'm here to discuss a potential collaboration with Mr Waylen. Are you on your way out, Dr Fred?”
Fred, who was used to her icing Queen attitude, suddenly found her politeness surprising.
“Yes I have to hurry back to the Waylen estate for a test”
Emily watched as Fred hurried off. She was a bit curious to ask, but chose to remain quiet.
She wasn't well-acquainted with Fred, and prying too much would seem inappropriate. She understood where to draw the line.
Emily then entered the villa, closing the gate behind her and taking a moment to look around the compound. If her own villa yard was well adorned, this one was stark and minimalist.
Beyond the neatly packed row of luxury cars, the yard was devoid of any extra embellishments, suggesting that Nathaniel might be residing here temporarily and had no plan of settling down.
Emily took sight of the scene before walking toward the villa, just as the door opened, a squad of sharply dressed bodyguards in black emerged, lining up in two straight lines, and the image fixed Forward.
Behind them, a tall, imposing figure appeared, radiating a commanding presence. Nathaniel wore a silver-gray suit, his handsome face typically stoic, looking surprised at Emily at the foot of the steps. He quickly regained composure, his stern expression softening into a faint smile.
“Miss Charles, it's wonderful to have you here. Why didn't you give me a heads up?”
Emily felt suddenly uneasy that Nathaniel would criticize her for showing up at his villa without notice. “I apologise, I was just about to knock when I bumped into Dr Fred who let me in”
Nathaniel arched a brow, perceiving Emily's discomfort, and he decided to soften his expression more. “ I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable. Did you want something from me?”
“Mr Waylen, are you on your way out? I've just completed a project proposal. If now isn't a good time… I could revisit another day”
“No. Now is perfect” Nathaniel quickly said with a smile, “I just want to make sure it's convenient for you too Miss Charles”
“What do you mean?”
“I'm actually heading to dinner, and I'm somehow in a hurry. And if you don't mind and you're available, why don't we discuss this proposal on the way? Once we get there, I'll arrange for my driver to take you back”
Nathaniel looked slightly apologetic as he furrowed his brow, “You see, Miss Charles, I only got back into the country yesterday, and my schedule is really tight right now. If this is inconvenient for you, we can drop it”
“No Mr Waylen, it is no trouble, I'm free”
Emily offered a genuine smile. With plenty of time on her hands and no pressing commitment, accommodating Nathaniel's schedule seems like a reasonable option.
Nathaniel's eyes brightened as he moved quickly to the car to open the door for her, displaying a polite, gentlemanly charm.
“Thank you for accommodating my schedule”
