Chapter 23

Chapter 23

Emily paused briefly and then exhaled deeply as she accepted her circumstances. There was nothing she could do now. “So what is your treatment plan, Doctor Fred?” She asked

“First, tell me about your symptoms in detail. And then I will take some blood samples and conduct some tests,” Fred explained as he prepared his medical kit. He applied iodine on a cotton swab and started cleaning Emily's hands for the blood draw.

Emily observed him calmly, she recalled how Fred had diagnosed her poisoning using a traditional method. Now she wonders why he was doing this in a modern medical way.

Noticing her staring at him, Fred chuckled lightly without glancing up, he already knew why she was staring at him that way, “I'm trained in both modern and traditional medicine”

Clearly, Fred was no ordinary doctor, which explained why Nathaniel trusted him so much. The Waylen family does not associate with people who do not matter and are not to their taste, Emily thought to herself.

Accepting to go under the treatment without declining, she no longer resists and recounts the worsening symptoms she had experienced in her past life all to Fred.

And as she spoke Fred listened carefully while at the same time taking her blood. He inspected the vial carefully and then neatly packed away his equipment. Looking at Emily intently, he said, “ So before marrying Victor, you were rarely sick, but afterward your health worsened, marked by frequent stages of weakness, dizziness, and fainting, is that true?”

Emily nodded, eager to learn more about the poison that is affecting her.

Fred pondered for a moment, touching his chin as if he was in deep thought, before he replied, “Your blood is darker than usual, indicating a long-term poisoning. The symptoms are manual, suggesting the poison is given in a small, consistent dose. I can't determine the poison type yet but further testing is required. But once I identify the poison, we can start the treatment. Is that okay with you?”

Emily nodded slightly, “Thank you, Doctor Fred”

“You're welcome, Miss Charles,” Fred said as he packed his kit and got up on his feet. He quietly looked around the room. Everything seemed normal, but he paused for a moment, observing the vanity table. Without a word, he approached it, his eyes drawn to the bowl and the half-full glass of milk that remained. It was the leftovers from last night.

Emily saw where Fred was looking, and felt her face grow warm with embarrassment. She had forgotten to ask Evelyn to clear the table this morning, but she hoped that Fred wouldn't assume she was a dirty woman inside.

“That was my dinner from last night… is there a problem with it?” She asked,

Fred lifts the glass of milk, studying it briefly before settling it down. He faced Emily with a warm smile that didn't quite reach his eyes,

“Miss Charles, you should watch what you eat and drink. It's easy for poison to be added to your meals and beverages”

Then he paused and hesitated before continuing, “ I guess the person harming you must be someone you know very well. Until we catch this person you need to be very careful with what you eat Miss Charles”

“Thank you for the warning, Doctor Fred. I'll definitely bear that in mind” She said and rose from the bed, feeling a bit energized after some rest. With a smile, she offered, “Can you please allow me to accompany you to the door, Doctor Fred?”

Fred nodded, accepting her offer as he understood such gestures were expected in wealthy families, so he moved toward the door.

Leaving the room with him, Emily gave one last wary look at the half-full glass of milk on the table before closing the door and walking Fred downstairs.

Initially, she had been suspicious of the nutritionist Victor had hired, but now she realized the issue was with the milk she had been consuming every night before bed.

It makes sense why Violet always seemed disrespectful, but never failed to serve her the milk every night.

Down in the living room, Nathaniel sat comfortably with his legs crossed like a king of the house engrossed in reading a magazine.

The sight of him in that sitting position made Emily's heart flutter as she descended the stairs.

“Ready done?” Nathaniel asked, lifting his gaze from the magazine to the stairs after he heard the sound of their footsteps. His eyes landed on Emily with an intense expression.

Feeling a sudden nervousness, Emily grabbed the hem of her skirt but quickly composed herself and let go of the fabric. She paced down, noticing the magazine in his hands, and said casually “ I didn't know you had an interest in perfume Mr Waylen”

“Just looking,” Nathaniel replied, tapping on the magazine lightly, “ this particular fragrance caught my eye It is supposed to embody the ocean and human emotions. I can't quite grasp how they blend. Are you familiar with this perfume, Miss Charles?”

Emily's pulse quickened as she looked at the magazine page and smiled weakly, “ I have heard of it but never actually seen it”

“That's Understandable, it is a rare piece by the famed perfumer Kiley Dury launched 6 years ago as a limited edition. Its value had skyrocketed to millions of dollars for a bottle. Such a fragrance is not easily found”

Nathaniel chuckled softly closing the magazine and setting it aside as he stood up on his feet, his rod falling neatly around him, he turned to Emily with an intent look and said, “If you have this perfume, Miss Charles, you could sell it and clear out your family's financial issues without needing my family's help”

Emily immediately fell silent, wondering if Nathaniel might have uncovered something

“Wait this perfume….it seemed familiar. I think I've seen it somewhere before,” Fred said, looking at the magazine page while furrowing his brows in thought.

Emily felt a flicker of anxiety once more, but just as she was about to reply, Evelyn's voice called from the kitchen doorway, “Miss Charles, breakfast is ready. Mr Waylen and Dr. Fred, will you be joining us?”
