Chapter 141: Searching for Evidence
"Atlas, we're still at the hospital, right? Where's my mom?"
As I spoke, I tried to get out of bed again, but Atlas pressed down on my shoulder. "Don't move. Mrs. Lockwood is fine. She's in the next room. You're the one with low blood sugar. The doctor said you need to rest and not move around."
"No, I need to see Mom. I have to go!"
Seeing how insistent I was, Atlas had no choice but to give in.
He knelt down on one knee and helped me put on my shoes.
"Okay, I'll go with you right now, Helena. Don't worry."
I couldn't even wait to put my shoes on properly before rushing toward the next room.
When I got inside, I saw Maria lying in bed talking to Henry, who was peeling fruit beside her.
Seeing Maria lying there safe and sound, tears instantly streamed down my face.
"Mom, Mom!"
Hearing my voice, Maria sat up and opened her arms to me. "Helena!"
"Mom, I'm so glad you're okay!"
I rushed forward crying and hugged Maria tightly, refusing to let go.
"Alright, even if your mom is fine, you're going to squeeze the breath out of her. Let go and let her breathe!" Henry said, pulling my hands away.
Only then did I reluctantly let go, nervously looking her up and down. "You're really okay?"
"Really, I'm fine. But what about you? Why do you have low blood sugar? Come here, lie down next to me."
Maria lifted a corner of the blanket, letting me crawl in.
After getting into bed, I lay beside her, hugging her waist tightly and resting my head on her shoulder, breathing in Maria's familiar scent.
She was alive. She was okay. Thank God!
My tense nerves finally began to relax.
My voice thick with tears, I said, "Mom, you scared me to death. What happened? How did you end up taking sleeping pills?"
Maria shook her head. "I don't know either. I never take those things."
Hearing this, I quickly sat up straight and looked at Henry. "During the party, Mom and I went with Grandma to the guest room. Mom drank some water then. It must have been something in that water!"
At this, Henry's expression immediately turned serious.
He took out his phone and said right in front of me, "Go check who prepared the tea and water in the second-floor guest lounge yesterday."
Someone on the other end responded faintly, and soon Henry asked again, "Did you get the surveillance footage?"
"Already got it."
Hearing this, Henry nodded slightly and said coldly, "Bring it to the hospital. I want to review it myself."
After hanging up, Henry looked at me. "The surveillance and personnel are all secured. Don't worry, I'll get to the bottom of this."
Hearing this, I finally felt relieved.
This time they hurt Maria and crossed Henry's line. Hopefully Henry can find something useful.
And Rosalind—this incident must be connected to her.
I suddenly remembered the man in the jacket I saw when Maria and I went downstairs. Piecing everything together, I broke out in a cold sweat.
If I had been the one to drink that water, that man we ran into getting off the elevator must have been waiting for me. But who was he?
Thinking of this, I told them about the man we encountered getting off the elevator. Henry's expression grew even more serious.
Soon, Mira, the head of the legal department, arrived at the room with a team carrying copied footage.
Henry and Atlas watched the video together in the outer suite while I stayed in bed talking with Maria.
"Mom, do you think the water you drank at Grandma's was really drugged?"
Maria sighed and stroked my hair. "Either way, I'm grateful. Thank goodness it wasn't you who drank that water."
"You drinking it isn't okay either. You have no idea—you and Dad almost scared me to death just now. This is the first time in my life I've seen Dad cry like a child with red eyes."
I tightened my arms around Maria's waist.
"Mom, you absolutely cannot let anything happen to you. If something really happened, I don't think Dad and I could go on living."
Maria slapped me hard on the back.
"What kind of nonsense are you talking? Even if I died, you'd better keep on living."
"Mom!"
Hearing this, I instantly recalled the scene from my past life when I heard about my parents dying in a car accident and burning in the fire. I started crying.
"Alright, alright. Look at you—you're all grown up, how can you cry over one sentence? Don't worry, I'll be fine."
"Your dad will be fine too. Come on now, stop crying."
Maria's gentle comfort didn't help. I cried even harder.
My crying immediately brought Henry and Atlas rushing in.
Seeing this scene, Henry asked anxiously, "What's wrong?"
Maria said helplessly, "I just said that even if I died she should keep living, and look—she's crying like this."
"Why are you scaring her for no reason? Really."
Henry frowned and took my hand. "Okay, stop crying. Your mom is fine."
I looked at Henry through my tears. "And Dad too."
"Yes, yes, I'll be fine too."
Henry finished speaking and glanced at Atlas beside him. "And Atlas. We'll all be fine."
"That's right, Helena, stop crying. If you keep crying, your eyes will swell up and won't look pretty anymore."
Atlas's words made both Henry and Maria laugh.
Looking at my family alive and well around me, the unease in my heart instantly vanished.
I got out of bed, washed my face, ate something, and finally felt like I was coming back to life.
I walked outside and saw Mira with several people intently watching footage from the party.
I looked down and asked, "How's it going? Have you found anything?"
Mira pushed up her glasses. "We've confirmed that Mrs. Lockwood drank a glass of champagne and ate some pastries on the first floor at yesterday's party, and then went upstairs and drank the tea you mentioned."
"We're having someone trace the source of the pastries and champagne. The tea was provided by Echo Point Castle staff, but we can't rule out someone drugging it later. Unfortunately, by the time we got there, the room had already been cleaned."
So there was no evidence.
I had already suspected Rosalind was behind this, and now I was even more certain.
Thinking of the stranger we encountered, I quickly asked, "Have you identified the man Mom and I ran into when we went downstairs?"
Mira nodded. "The police are investigating. We should have results soon."
Seeing me restless, Atlas handed me a cup of coffee. "Don't worry, we'll find out."
I nodded, noticing the exhaustion in his eyes. He'd been through a lot today too.
"Thank you. You've had a long day."
"What silly talk is that?"
Atlas touched the top of my head and smiled. "Isn't it my job to help my girlfriend?"
