Chapter 88 Chapter 88
Amelia
I put my head on Maxwell’s shoulder as we both drove home, completely exhausted from the whole day's activities. The drive was quiet. Maxwell sat beside me in the backseat, scrolling through something on his phone. I kept my eyes on the window, watching the city blur past, trying to keep my thoughts steady.
My phone suddenly rang, I glanced at the screen, it was my mom calling. My heart skipped, I wondered why she was calling. I answered immediately. “Hello, Mom?”
Her voice was not calm. “Amelia, where are you?”
“On my way from work, is everything okay?” I asked because her voice sounded urgent.
“Your dad went to pick the girls from school and he can’t find them, all five of them.” I froze for a second.
“What do you mean not in school?”
“He went to pick them up early,” she said, her voice shaking slightly. “The school said they were signed out before noon.”
My blood ran cold. “Signed out? By who?”
“They wouldn’t tell me much. They said someone came and picked them up.”
My breathing changed instantly. “That’s impossible,” I whispered. “You didn’t send anyone.”
“Of course not!” she snapped. “Amelia, I don’t know where they are.”
My chest tightened painfully. “I’m coming,” I said quickly and hung up. “Stop the car,” I said immediately.
Maxwell looked up at me. “What happened?”
“I need to get down. Please just stop the car.” I said as I grabbed my bag.
“Is everything okay?” He asked.
“I need to go see my parents, I will join you at home.” I said.
His expression changed instantly. “Did something happen to them?” He asked
“No, they are perfectly fine.” I said, trying to keep my voice steady but failing. “I just need to see my mom, everything is perfectly okay” I said. The driver was already slowing down. “I need to go,” I said urgently.
Maxwell’s hand caught my wrist before I could reach for the door handle. “I will take you.”
“No,” I said too quickly. “It’s fine. I will go myself. You had a long day at the office and you also need to rest.” I said hoping he would let me go alone. I really wish I could hide my emotions but it’s really hard to.
He narrowed his eyes slightly. “Amelia, you are clearly not in the right state of mind, let me take you to them only if you have something to hide and you don’t want me to meet them.” He said.
I looked at him, almost speechless, my heart beating fast, this is not how I want him to find out about them. “I just need to move fast,” I insisted. “I don’t want to waste time.” I lied.
“You and I know driving you there is faster.” he said firmly. “I’m coming with you.”
My stomach twisted, this is the last thing I wanted. “It’s not necessary,” I tried again.
“It is,” he replied calmly, but there was no room for argument in his tone. “You are not going alone in this state.” I hesitated
If he came, he is going to find out the truth, but refusing too hard would look suspicious. He turned to the driver. “Change direction.”
Then he looked back at me. “Give him the address.”
My throat felt dry. For a second, I couldn’t speak. “Amelia.”
I forced myself to breathe, then I gave the driver my parents’ address. The car moved again. Maxwell reached for my hand. “Are you sure everything is fine?” he asked quietly.
I nodded, but my heart was pounding so loudly I could barely hear anything else.Because deep down, I had a terrifying thought, what will happen if Maxwell find out about the kids.
