Chapter 60 Chapter 60
Adele
I was in the kitchen making dinner when I heard my phone ringing in the sitting room. I turned off the stove and went to check who it was. When I picked it up, I saw Rafe’s name on the screen.
“Hey, amore. How are you doing?” he asked, his voice overly excited.
I smiled as I walked back into the kitchen. “I’m fine. I just got back from work not too long ago, and I got completely drenched in the rain because I didn’t take my car today,” I said into the phone.
“That’s exactly why I’m here,” he replied smoothly. “To warm you up.”
My heart skipped. I rushed to the kitchen window and pulled the curtain aside. His car was parked right outside. I gasped, then laughed, excitement bubbling inside me. I quickly turned off the stove and wiped my hands.
I ran to the door, and before I could even open it fully, he was already standing there. He stepped inside holding a bouquet of flowers and a few gift boxes.
I hugged him immediately, breathing in his familiar scent. He handed me the flowers, and I held them close.
“I love them so much,” I said softly, smelling them.
He placed the gifts on the table and smiled at me. “I saw them and couldn’t stop thinking about you. About how beautiful and radiant you are.”
He stepped closer, his hands finding my waist, and before I could reply, his lips were on mine, kissing me gently, like he had all the time in the world.
I kissed him back, my hands resting lightly on his chest. When we finally broke apart, my eyes drifted down to the gift boxes on the table.
“So… what do we have here?” I asked with a small smile as I opened them one by one.
In one of the boxes was a diamond necklace.
It was stunning, catching the light in the room in a way that made it impossible to ignore. I gasped softly as I lifted it into my hands.
“Rafe, this is too much,” I said, looking up at him. “We haven’t even defined what we are yet.”
He gently turned me to face him and pulled me closer, his hands warm and steady on my waist.
“I know we haven’t defined anything,” he said calmly. “But I know what I feel. I want you, and I don’t want to lose the spark and light you have brought into my life. When I smile these days, it’s because I’m thinking about you.”
My heart softened instantly. His words felt unreal, almost too good to be true. A man wanting me this deeply, going out of his way like this, a diamond necklace. I had never been on the receiving end before I had always been the one giving.
“I… I don’t know what to say,” I stammered.
Tears filled my eyes, but they weren’t sad tears. They were tears of joy, of feeling seen, chosen, and cherished.
“You don’t have to say anything,” he murmured. “I just want to keep overwhelming you—with my love, with surprises, with care. Adele, I don’t understand what you have done to me, but I love it. Let me love you the right way, amore.”
The only response I could find was to kiss him. The kiss was deeper this time, full of emotion and need. He took the lead, lifting me effortlessly off the floor and carrying me to the nearby couch. He sat down and settled me on his lap, my arms instinctively wrapping around him as the moment pulled us closer.
He pulled away from the kiss, and we both gasped softly for air. A small smile curved his lips. “There’s no need to rush,” he said quietly. “I plan on spending the whole night with you, so you won’t even catch a breath by tomorrow.”
I smiled, my heart warm. “You spoil me too much,” I said, my eyes drifting to the unopened gift boxes still sitting on the table.
Before I could reach for them, his phone rang. I slowly stood up from his lap as he pulled his phone from his pocket. My eyes accidentally caught the screen, and my chest tightened when I saw the name flashing there. Jenna.
He answered the call and stood up immediately, his body tense.
“Amore, I have to go,” he said, avoiding my eyes. “I’m so sorry, but I promise I will make it up to you.”
My heart shattered in that moment. He had told me the night we met at the club that he blocked her number. Yet here she was, calling him and he was leaving me for her. Outside, the rain was still pouring heavily, the wind howling against the windows.
I swallowed hard, forcing the words out. “It’s fine. You can go.”
“I’m sorry, babe,” he said softly. He leaned down, kissed my forehead quickly, and rushed out of the house without looking back. The door closed behind him, and the silence felt unbearable.
I sank to the floor, my legs giving out, and the tears came freely. I covered my mouth as I cried, my chest aching.
I don’t think I will ever find true love. Every time I think I have found someone good, someone different, it turns out they’re still holding on to their past. One snap of her fingers, and he jumps.
That night, I called him over and over again, worried because of how heavy the rain was. I just wanted to know if he got home safely. He didn’t pick up, he didn't call back.
By morning, my decision was made, I was done. For my own peace and sanity, I was breaking things off with him for good.
The next day, we had a meeting scheduled at his office. I packed every single gift he had given me into my car and drove there with a heavy heart. I wasn’t coming to talk about feelings. I was coming to end things properly.
When I got to his floor, I saw him standing outside his office. Something about him felt off and different, I couldn’t quite place it, but my instincts immediately went on edge.
I walked closer, my expression hard, making it clear I wasn’t there for jokes or familiarity. Even his scent felt different, unfamiliar. I cleared my throat.
“Hello, Mr. Blackthorn,” I said coolly. “Are we having our meeting inside your office or out here?” My tone was clipped and professional.
He didn’t answer right away. He just stared at me, his eyes roaming over my face. “You are so beautiful,” he said softly.
I frowned. If this was his way of trying to win my forgiveness, then he clearly thought I was desperate and stupid.
“I know,” I replied flatly. “I have a mirror in my house.” I paused, then gestured toward the door. “Can we go into your office for the meeting?”
At that moment, the office door opened. I froze.
Slowly, I turned my head between the man standing in front of me and the one now at the doorway. My heart dropped into my stomach. They looked exactly alike, Rafe had never told me he was a twin.
I looked back at Rafe, and the color drained from his face. His jaw tightened, his eyes wide with something that looked dangerously close to panic.
Author's note: the ending was a twist I never expected🤭🤭
