Chapter 55 Chapter 55
Amelia
I sat across from Maxwell in his office, my laptop open in front of me. He had a meeting later this afternoon, but for now, we were supposed to be working on his pitch together. We kept sneaking glances at each other, but neither of us said anything. The silence between us felt heavy, like there was something unsaid that we both wanted to say.
“If you have something you want to say, just say it,” Maxwell said finally, not even looking up from his laptop. “And stop staring at me.”
I shifted in my chair and pushed my laptop back a little. “Did you ask Kelvin to stop giving me information about my company?” I asked slowly, making sure to put emphasis on my. I hated how every time I called Kelvin for updates, he would give me half-answers or avoid my questions completely. It was frustrating.
Maxwell had made it clear that the security at my company wasn’t supposed to let me in unless we went together. That meant I couldn’t check on anything myself anymore, and it made me feel trapped.
“He is no longer your PA,” Maxwell said, his voice cold and firm. “I am the one paying him now.”
I frowned, trying to hide my frustration, but I couldn’t stop the sharp feeling in my chest.
Everything about the situation made me feel like I was losing control over something that was supposed to be mine.
“I hired him!” I shot back, my voice sharp. “And you are paying him with money you made from my company!” I spat the words out, frustration burning through me.
Maxwell finally lifted his head and gave me his full attention. He shook his head slowly, as if disappointed. “You really think your company has money left? Not to mention enough to pay your employees? You should be thanking me for stepping in. Your company was heading straight for bankruptcy.”
“We were doing just fine before you decided to take everything from me!” I snapped, anger rising in my chest. “There was no bankruptcy. Don’t act like some kind of savior here.”
He stared at me for a long moment, his gaze cold and sharp. “Were you always this naive or did you just happen to trust people blindly?”
My face flushed with anger, but he didn’t stop.
“Millions were being siphoned from your company even your…” He paused, his words hanging in the air as he swallowed whatever he was about to say next.
“My what? What do you mean?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly, but Maxwell just sighed and shook his head.
“Never mind,” he said finally, turning back to his laptop. “The truth will come to light soon enough.”
“You don’t even have facts, and yet you are throwing accusations around,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. Then I hesitated, feeling a pang of frustration. “When am I allowed to visit the company? Even if it’s just to look around?”
“When I deem it appropriate,” he replied without looking up. “But not anytime soon.”
I clenched my fists under the table. My father had already been calling, asking when I would return as a member of the board and CEO. He didn’t build his legacy for some man to swoop in and take everything away from his daughter.
I had avoided going home this weekend to see the kids because I didn’t even know what to tell him.
We continued working in silence until the office door suddenly opened. Camilla walked in, dressed in a skimpy, attention-grabbing dress. She ignored me completely, her eyes fixed on Maxwell as she strutted past me and settled on his lap, leaning against him as if she owned the place.
“Hey, baby, I missed you,” Camilla said, pressing her lips to his in a way that made my stomach twist. “I came to pick something up at the boutique down the street, but I thought I’d check on you,” she added, smiling and running her fingers through his hair.
Maxwell didn’t push her away. Instead, she turned toward me with a sly grin. “Hello, secretary,” she said, her voice dripping with mock politeness. “Can you excuse us? My baby and I need a private moment.”
I glanced at Maxwell, expecting him to say something, but before he could respond, his phone rang. Camilla slid off his lap, and he picked up the call.
“What the hell!” he shouted into the phone, his voice sharp. “I will join you at the hospital right now.” Without another word, he stood up, closing his laptop.
“I have to go,” he said abruptly, his tone leaving no room for argument. Then he glanced at Camilla. “You are coming with me.”
Camilla’s lips curved into a smug, triumphant smile. My chest tightened, and I felt heat rise to my face.
Maxwell didn’t even glance at me or give me a single instruction. He simply strode past me, his presence leaving a cold emptiness in the office, and walked out as if I didn’t exist. I sat there, frozen for a moment, my hands gripping the edge of the table, anger and disbelief swirling inside me.
