Chapter 159 Chapter 159
Chapter 159 Chapter 159
Amelia
Two years later
I smiled as I watched Shindara standing beside me, one hand resting protectively on her noticeably round belly. Pregnancy suited her so well. She looked happier than I had ever seen her, and it was hard to believe she was the same woman who had once sworn off men forever.
I laughed and shook my head.
"Look at your big stomach, Dara. I thought you told me that men would stain your white and you wanted absolutely nothing to do with them again."
Shindara threw her head back and laughed. She gently rubbed her baby bump before looking at me with a teasing smile. "Well, that changed two years ago after I found my Prince Charming.” She said. “Look at Maxwell, he is so hot... jeezz, he hasn't even taken his eyes off you since."
I turned my head in Maxwell's direction. The wedding reception was in full swing. Guests filled the beautifully decorated hall, laughing, eating, and dancing to the music. Maxwell was making his way around the room, greeting family, friends, and business associates who had traveled from different parts of the world to celebrate with us.
Even while speaking to everyone, his eyes kept finding mine. The moment our gazes met, he smiled at me, making my heart skip exactly the way it always had. Some things never changed.
Shindara nudged my arm before speaking again. "Thank you for letting me plan your owanbe. See, I told you the guests would love it if I brought some Nigerian vibe to your wedding."
I rolled my eyes dramatically. "You literally threatened to stop talking to me if I didn't allow you to plan it." The memory made me laugh. "But I love it so much. Thanks, Dara."
I wrapped my arms around her in a careful hug, making sure not to squeeze her baby bump. Shindara had become one of the most sought-after wedding planners in Nigeria. Her events were always breathtaking, so when I called to tell her Maxwell and I were finally getting married, she didn't even give me the chance to hire someone else. She immediately declared that she would be planning every detail herself.
Looking around the reception, I had to admit she had outdone herself.
The elegant decorations blended perfectly with the colorful Nigerian cultural touch she had insisted on adding. The music, the food, the traditional entertainers, and the atmosphere all came together beautifully. Our guests were having the time of their lives.
This was the wedding Maxwell and I never had. Two years had passed since we found our way back to each other, and life had only gotten better. Maxwell regained all of his memories a year after we reunited. At first, he only remembered bits and pieces, but little by little, everything returned.
When his memories finally came back completely, so did every memory of us. If I had thought he loved me deeply before, I quickly realized I had underestimated him. His love only grew stronger.
Sometimes I honestly wondered how one person could love another so much. He spoiled me every chance he got, never let me doubt how much I meant to him, and somehow managed to make me fall in love with him all over again every single day.
Four months ago, he got down on one knee and proposed. I had honestly told him I didn't think we needed another wedding. We already belonged to each other in every way that mattered. But Maxwell wouldn't hear of it. He wanted us to exchange our vows properly, surrounded by everyone we loved.
He wanted our families, our friends, and the entire world to witness the beginning of the rest of our lives together. So here we were. Finally having the wedding we deserved.
"I think I need to start going to bikers' games with an aphrodisiac drug in my purse, then find a hot trillionaire like Maxwell Sinclair to slip it into his drink." Adele's voice made both Dara and me turn around.
She walked over with a playful grin on her face before stopping beside us. "What will happen to the hottie you've been eyeing since and pretending you weren't?" Shindara asked with a knowing smile, she was talking about Rafe.
Adele and Rafe had broken up a year ago. Somehow, Rafe's family had announced his engagement to the daughter of one of their business associates. Although Rafe insisted he had no idea it was his own engagement party until he arrived, the damage had already been done.
His family had also threatened to disinherit him if he refused to marry their chosen bride. At the time, Adele had become the target of public attention because of the scandal. She didn't want to get dragged into the family drama, so she ended their relationship.
"I wasn't eyeing him. I just think he is doing a bit too much to be noticed." Shindara and I exchanged knowing glances before smiling at each other.
"Adele, just admit you are not over him, and there is no big deal if you get back with him." I said with a smile. "He hasn't stopped staring at you all day too." Adele rolled her eyes, clearly refusing to entertain the conversation.
Before she could say anything else, I suddenly felt a pair of strong arms slide around my waist from behind. I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
"I would like to have my wife back, ladies." Maxwell's deep voice sounded beside my ear as he pressed a gentle kiss against my neck, sending a pleasant shiver through my entire body. I smiled instinctively and leaned back against him.
"Come on, Maxwell, you are going to have her to yourself forever. Just some minutes with the girls won't hurt." Adele folded her arms as she looked at him.
"Well, you are the only one who minds. Dara right here doesn't really mind." Maxwell barely finished speaking before Shindara's husband walked over, wrapped his arms around her, and gently pulled her away from us.
Adele rolled her eyes dramatically.
"I think you need to get some excitement in your life, Adele." I couldn't help laughing.
Maxwell and Adele had been teasing each other like this for years. Neither of them ever missed an opportunity to throw little jabs at the other. Maxwell always claimed he would never forgive Adele for destroying several expensive cars at his parents' house years ago. Adele, on the other hand, always insisted she didn't care.
Watching the two of them argue had become normal for everyone around us.
Just then, I noticed Rafe walking toward us. The second Adele saw him, she let out a loud hiss before turning on her heels and walking away. Rafe simply winked in her direction before continuing after her. I watched them leave with a smile.
No matter how much Adele pretended she had moved on, it was obvious there were still feelings between them. Maybe one day they would finally stop running from each other.
"Hey, wifey."
I turned to face Maxwell. He smiled warmly before leaning down and placing a soft kiss on my lips.
"Hey, hubby." I intertwined my fingers with his, holding his hand tightly.
"I can't believe we have come this far." As I spoke, my eyes drifted across the reception hall. Our daughters were laughing happily as they danced with the other children, running from one end of the ballroom to the other without a care in the world. The sight filled my heart with so much peace.
There was a time when I feared I would never get to experience moments like this. Now, everything I had once dreamed of was standing right in front of me.
Maxwell followed my gaze before smiling. "Ten years and the love is still waxing strong. Thank you for slipping that drug inside my drink ten years ago. My life would have been miserable, and I know for sure that I would never have found someone like you."
I couldn't help smiling through the tears that threatened to gather in my eyes. As much as Maxwell believed I had changed his life, the truth was that he had completely changed mine.
I was the one who had every reason to be grateful. To this day, I still didn't understand how I had been given a second chance at life. I didn't know what miracle had allowed me to be reborn ten years ago. All I knew was that I thanked God for it every single day.
If that miracle had never happened, if I had remained with Declan, I knew exactly how my story would have ended. I probably wouldn't have survived it and Adele wouldn't even be standing here tonight, smiling and arguing with Maxwell like nothing in the world could ever separate us again.
One unexpected moment had changed the course of my entire life. Looking back now, I realized every obstacle, every heartbreak, every betrayal, every tear, and every painful battle Maxwell and I had fought together had been worth it. Because they had led us here.
"I love you so much, Maxwell Sinclair. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Thank you for the way you love me and for reminding me every single day that I am yours forever. It is you and me against the world forever."
Emotion filled Maxwell's eyes before he closed the distance between us. He captured my lips in a deep kiss, and within seconds, we were completely lost in each other, forgetting that hundreds of guests were still celebrating just a few feet away.
"Can you guys please get a room?" Adrian's voice broke through the moment as he walked past us.
Maxwell pulled away reluctantly and grinned. "Come on, let's go to the bathroom." I shot him a stern look, but he simply laughed and took my hand, leading me away from the reception.
When we reached the first restroom, Maxwell pushed the door open. The two of us froze at the exact same time. Rafe had his head under Adele’s gown, far too occupied with each other to notice us immediately.
"Sorry for disturbing you guys." We both spoke at the same time before quickly pulling the door shut. Maxwell burst into laughter as we hurried away.
He reached for another restroom, but it turned out that one was occupied too, then another. Apparently, several couples at the reception had the same idea. He shook his head in defeat. "Let's just call it a day and go home."
I couldn't stop laughing. Just then, my phone began ringing from inside Maxwell's suit pocket. He frowned as he pulled it out.
"Who doesn't understand that today is our day and keeps calling?" He glanced at the screen before his expression changed. "It's the hospital."
A few days before the wedding, I had been feeling slightly unwell. Although I insisted it was probably nothing, Maxwell refused to take any chances and practically dragged me to the hospital for a full checkup. The doctor had run several tests, but I hadn't stayed to collect the results because Shindara had called, insisting I come immediately for the wedding rehearsals.
Maxwell answered the call. "Hello... yes, it's her husband."
He listened quietly for several seconds. Slowly, his eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you sure?" There was another pause before he ended the call.
He simply stood there staring at me. My heart immediately began racing."What is it?"
His lips slowly curved into the biggest smile I had ever seen. "You're pregnant."
I let out a small scoff. "You know that's impossible, right?"
"It's not a joke. This is real." Before I could process his words, he swept me off my feet and spun me around. "This is a fucking miracle, baby."
I stared at him, still struggling to believe what I had just heard."But... how?"
He gently set me back on the floor before cupping my face in both hands.
"Let's just say this is a big sign that God really wants us together forever." He covered my forehead, cheeks, and lips with happy, scattered kisses. "I get a chance to be a father, and this time I'm going to watch our child grow."
Tears instantly blurred my vision. It felt like the perfect beginning to the next chapter of our forever.
