Chapter 157 Chapter 157
Amelia
Mrs. Cole stared at her husband in complete disbelief, her eyes widening as the weight of his confession settled over her. Her lips trembled, and when she finally found her voice, it was filled with horror.
“You killed David too?” Mrs. Cole asked, with shock evident in her voice. “What kind of monster are you?”
Mr. Cole didn't look ashamed. His expression remained calm, almost as if he believed he had done nothing wrong.
“I did it because I love you, not because of the property or anything, I loved you first before you met David and I hated the fact that you had his child that was why I switched her at birth, I could have killed her but I didn’t, I just couldn’t watch you love David’s child or give her more attention than mine.” He said.
Mrs. Cole staggered backward, pressing a trembling hand against her chest as if she was struggling to breathe. The truth was simply too much for her to bear. Adrian quickly moved beside her and wrapped an arm around her before she could lose her balance.
She looked at Mr. Cole with tears gathering in her eyes, unable to understand how the man she had spent years with could be responsible for so much pain.
“That’s why you wanted to ruin her life, her husband’s life, that man lost his memories because of you.” She yelled.
Mr. Cole simply shrugged, showing no guilt for everything he had admitted.
“I was only helping a friend’s daughter, her father said he wanted to help his daughter get revenge on Sinclair for dumping his daughter and blocking every possibility of having access to do business with the Sinclairs in future and I offered a little help.” He said.
He spoke so casually that it sent chills down my spine. There wasn't the slightest hint of remorse in his voice. He confessed to destroying lives as though he was talking about an ordinary business deal.
Mrs. Cole shook her head slowly, tears rolling freely down her face.
“I hope you rot in jail.” Mrs. Cole said.
Her entire body began to shake uncontrollably. The stress, heartbreak, and shock had become too much for her to handle. Before anyone could react, her eyes rolled back and she collapsed.
Adrian caught her just before she hit the floor.
Without wasting another second, he lifted her into his arms. We hurried after him. At the same time, officers from the NYPD escorted Mr. Cole out of the house in handcuffs while we focused on getting Mrs. Cole to the hospital.
Adrian and I sat quietly in the hospital waiting room. Mrs. Cole had been admitted a while ago, and the doctor told us she was stable but needed plenty of rest after the shock she had suffered.
Neither of us spoke for several minutes. The silence between us felt heavy until I finally worked up the courage to break it.
“I owe you an apology,” I said softly. “I'm sorry about what happened earlier.” I lowered my eyes, unable to meet his gaze.
“I was so quick to believe Camilla. I slapped you and accused you of things without having any proof. She only wanted to drag you into everything because your father was involved, and I fell right into her trap.”
Adrian sighed and shook his head.
“You don't have to apologize,” he said. “If anyone should be saying sorry, it's me. I'm sorry for everything my father put you through. I never imagined he was capable of something so terrible. He hid his true nature so well that no one would have suspected him. I can't even begin to imagine what your life must have been like growing up with the Davies.”
I wiped the tears gathering in my eyes before answering. “My life with the Davies wasn't bad,” I said. “They loved me and treated me like I was their own daughter. I guess that's because they truly believed I was. Everything changed after they found out Rhea was their biological child.”
The memory still hurt no matter how hard I tried to move on. One moment I was part of the family, and the next, everything I had known was gone. Adrian looked at me with sympathy.
“I'm really sorry you had to go through all of that,” he said. “Do you remember the day Mom met you at the boutique? After that, she kept asking about you. She even wanted me to invite you over for dinner. I told her you were with Maxwell, and she made it very clear that I wasn't to develop feelings for you or think about dating you.”
A faint smile crossed his face before he continued.
“Every time I came to see you, she'd ask how you were doing. I always thought it was strange, especially after the DNA test came back negative. She was actually the reason I kept coming around. Even then, I felt a connection to you that I couldn't explain.”
His words brought fresh tears to my eyes. It turned out that the bond we had both felt wasn't our imagination after all.
I smiled through my tears. “Thank you,” I said. “Thank you for standing by me all this time. You were already acting like my brother long before either of us knew we were actually related.”
Adrian moved closer and wrapped me in a warm embrace. The moment his arms went around me, I broke down completely. I cried into his shoulder, unable to hold back my emotions any longer. They were tears of both joy and sorrow. I mourned the father I would never get the chance to know and the years I had lost without my mother. At the same time, my heart was full because I had finally found her. The woman I had believed ignored my existence all these years had actually been protecting me the only way she knew how.
A few minutes later, a nurse walked into the waiting room. "Mrs. Cole is awake."
Adrian and I immediately stood up and hurried to her hospital room. She was already sitting up in bed, her eyes fixed on the door as though she had been waiting for us. The moment she saw me walk in, tears filled her eyes again and streamed down her cheeks.
“No, no, Mom,” Adrian said gently. “No more tears. Amelia is here now.”
Mrs. Cole stretched out her arms toward me. I didn't hesitate. I rushed into her embrace and held her as tightly as I could. We clung to each other, crying in one another's arms, trying to make up for all the years we had lost.
“I missed you so much, my baby. I am so sorry it took this long for me to finally bring you home.” She said.
I slowly pulled away and looked into her tear-filled eyes.
“I'm just happy I found you,” I said. “For the past two years, I believed I had no one. I felt so alone but now that I know you are alive, I'm truly happy and grateful.”
She cupped my face with trembling hands, smiling through her tears. “I have waited for this day for so long,” she said. “When I heard you had been shot and slipped into a coma, I almost killed Orion while he was sleeping. But I stopped myself because I knew that if I went to jail, I would never get the chance to meet you. And I didn't trust what he would do to either of you.”
I reached for her hand and squeezed it gently. She looked from me to Adrian, her smile growing warmer. “I'm so grateful Adrian was always there whenever you needed someone,” she said. “It makes my heart so happy to see my children so close to each other.”
She opened her arms once more, and this time both Adrian and I stepped forward. She wrapped us in a tight embrace, holding us close as the three of us remained there, grateful that after so many years apart, we had finally become the family we were always meant to be.
