Chapter 148 Chapter 148
Chapter 148 Chapter 148
Maxwell
“What are you talking about?” I asked, rubbing the side of my nose where his fist had landed.
The sharp pain made my eyes water for a second. Before I could fully regain my balance or get back on my feet, Adrian charged at me again.
His fist slammed into my face, then another. He kept throwing punches without giving me a chance to recover.
I pushed myself up and fought back. My fist connected with his jaw, forcing him to stagger a step, but he came right back at me. We exchanged blow after blow, neither of us willing to back down.
The office door suddenly flew open. Alvin rushed inside with a shocked look on his face. He hurried between us and grabbed Adrian, trying to pull him away from me and drag him toward the door.
Adrian struggled against his grip until he broke free. He turned to face me, his chest rising and falling as he breathed heavily.
“So you have decided you don't want her in your life anymore,” he said angrily. “But why are you trying to ruin her life too? Why are you trying to take away the only happiness she has?”
His voice echoed through the office.
“I promise you, Maxwell, if anything happens to her, you will pay for it with your life.”
With that, he turned around and stormed out of my office. The room fell silent. I watched him leave before bringing my hand to my face. My nose was bleeding, and I could taste blood from my split lip.
I let out a frustrated hiss. He had caught me completely off guard when he attacked me, but at least I hadn't stood there and taken it. I had landed enough punches to leave my mark on him too.
I turned to Alvin, still trying to understand what had just happened.
“What the hell was that even about?” I demanded.
Alvin hesitated for a moment before clearing his throat.
“It's Mrs. Sinclair... sorry,” he corrected himself quickly. “Miss Amelia.”
He paused briefly before continuing. “News just came in that a witness has testified against Miss Amelia. The witness claims she may have been involved in the death of Miss Thelma, the woman who died under mysterious circumstances.”
I stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean?” I asked.
“Well...” Alvin began carefully. “The witness claimed she saw Miss Amelia threatening Miss Thelma at the bikers' race after you gave Miss Thelma your phone number. According to the witness, Miss Amelia killed her out of jealousy.”
I frowned. “That doesn't make any sense.” If Amelia had killed that woman out of jealousy, then why was Camilla still alive? Camilla was my fiancée. We lived under the same roof, yet Amelia had never done anything to her.
Besides, Amelia wasn't even there anymore when I gave Thelma my number. She had already left the race. Adrian had left too.
Something about the accusation felt wrong, my thoughts immediately drifted to Camilla. Why did I suddenly have this feeling that she had something to do with it?
A sharp pain shot through my head, I grabbed it with one hand and shut my eyes for a moment. “I need to go to the hospital,” I said, pressing my fingers against my temple. “Tell the cleaners to clean up this office. I probably won't be coming back today.”
“I will drive you there, sir,” Alvin replied immediately. “I will also call your doctor on the way.”
“Good.”
I picked up my jacket, gathered my things from the desk, and walked out of the office with Alvin following behind me. By the time we arrived at the hospital, the headache had become almost unbearable.
The doctor was already waiting for us. After examining me, he treated the cut on my lip and the bleeding on my nose before giving me medication for the headache.
Dr. Thomas insisted that I stay in the hospital for a few hours to rest before going home. I wasn't in the mood to argue.
After taking the pain medication, I lay down on the hospital bed. The medicine quickly took effect, and I drifted off to sleep.
A few hours later, I slowly opened my eyes. “How do you feel now, sir?” Alvin asked the moment he noticed I was awake.
I turned my head toward him. He was still sitting in the chair beside my bed. “Better,” I answered honestly. “I thought you left.”
He shook his head. “I decided to wait since you'll be discharged in a few hours.”
He reached for my phone on the bedside table and handed it to me. “Your fiancée has been calling all day,” he said.
I took the phone from him and looked at the screen. Sixty missed calls, more than fifty were from Camilla. The rest were from my parents.
I stared at the screen in confusion. What the hell was going on? As if on cue, the phone started ringing again. Camilla was calling.
I answered the call immediately. “Where the hell have you been, Maxwell?” Camilla demanded. Her voice was shaky, like she had been crying.
A wave of guilt washed over me.
“I have been calling you for hours. I went back to your office, and they told me you left with your PA. I tried calling him too, but he hasn't been answering any of my calls either.”
“I'm at the hospital,” I replied.
“What?” She shouted so loudly that I had to pull the phone away from my ear.
“Why are you at the hospital? What happened? Are you hurt? Tell me the name of the hospital. Send me your location right now. I'm coming.”
“I'm fine,” I said calmly. “There's no need to come. I will be home soon.”
“Maxwell, I'm coming to that hospital,” she insisted. “Did you see a doctor? And why did you remove the neck chain I gave you?”
I frowned. Why was she suddenly talking about the necklace? I had stopped wearing it a few days ago, but she hadn't noticed until now.
I never liked wearing necklaces in the first place. The only reason I wore it was because she had insisted. She had told me it meant I was carrying her love with me wherever I went.
“I will call you back,” I said. Before she could respond, I ended the call as the doctor walked into the room.
“How are you feeling now?” Thomas asked as he stepped inside.
“I feel better,” I replied with a nod. “But I need you to run some tests.”
He looked at me expectantly.
“I have been having headaches lately,” I continued. “They are becoming more frequent, and I'm starting to get worried.”
“No problem,” Thomas said with a reassuring smile. “We will run the necessary tests.” He paused before smiling again. “I never had the chance to congratulate you about your daughters,” he said. “I was really happy when I heard you have five of them.”
I smiled. “Thanks so much,” I said. “They mean the world to me.”
I couldn't help smiling even wider as I thought about them. “They can be a handful, but they have made my life complete. Every single day with them is worth it.”
Thomas chuckled. “I still can't believe it,” he said. “When everything happened, we thought all hope was gone. Then God performed a miracle.”
He shook his head with a smile. “I was honestly worried. As Sinclair family's only heir, and I kept wondering what would happen to the family line. But now, seeing that you have five daughters... the Sinclair empire is safe.”
I frowned. His words didn't make any sense. “What are you talking about?” I asked.
Thomas glanced at Alvin before looking back at me, I turned to my assistant. “Alvin, could you excuse us for a moment?”
“Yes, sir.” Alvin stood up and quietly left the room, closing the door behind him.
The moment we were alone, I looked back at Thomas. “What were you talking about?” I asked again.
Thomas looked surprised by my reaction.
“I only meant that I'm happy for you,” he said. “After we discovered that your vas deferens had been damaged and your semen contained little to no sperm, I honestly thought you would never have children.”
He paused before continuing.
“You asked us to repeat the tests several times because you couldn't believe the results. We did every test you requested, but they all came back the same.”
He gave me a small smile. “So when the news broke that you had five daughters, I was relieved. I thought it was nothing short of a miracle.”
I stared at him. For a few seconds, I couldn't find my voice. Then I finally spoke. “Are you saying, I can't have children?” I asked slowly. “You are saying I can't produce sperm?”
Thomas blinked. “Yes.”
The confusion on his face deepened. “You already knew that.” He studied me carefully. “After you accident, we had to carry out test frequently, you just want to have at least a child.” He said then his smile widened. “It was a miracle that you had your daughters before the accident.”
His expression shifted from confusion to concern. “Maxwell, did you forget? Are these headaches affecting your memory?”
I barely heard the rest of what he was saying. My mind had already gone somewhere else. If
I couldn't produce sperm, then how had Camilla gotten pregnant?
The question echoed over and over in my head.
