Chapter 145 Chapter 145
Amelia
It hurt more than I wanted to admit that I never got the chance to speak to Maxwell. Everywhere he went, Camilla was right beside him, making sure no one could get close enough to have a conversation with him. She stayed glued to his side the entire time, blocking every opportunity I had to approach him.
It was honestly pitiful to watch. She looked even more desperate than the women openly trying to get his attention. If what he felt for her was truly real, she wouldn't have to spend every second guarding him from every woman who came near. Love shouldn't have to look like fear.
I tried to push those thoughts away as I stood in my kitchen, preparing dinner. Earlier, Adrian had offered to take me out to eat, but I turned him down. I wanted to stay home and cook a proper homemade meal instead. Keeping myself busy felt like the only way to stop myself from thinking about everything that had happened.
When I got home, I noticed the apartment had already been cleaned from top to bottom. I hadn't even had the chance to find out whether Adrian had arranged for the cleaners or if Adele had done it.
I was stirring the food absentmindedly when a loud knock echoed through the apartment. It definitely wasn't Adele or Adrian. Neither of them would knock that hard.
Before I could gather my thoughts, another knock came, even louder than the first, followed by several more in quick succession.
My heart started pounding. I wiped my hands on a kitchen towel and slowly walked to the front door. Taking a deep breath, I unlocked it and pulled it open.
Several hefty men were standing outside, I frowned in confusion. "Who are you guys?" I asked.
"We are here on Mr. Maxwell's orders," one of the men replied. "He has instructed us to make sure you vacate this building tonight."
My heart skipped a beat. "That's impossible. This is my house," I said, panic creeping into my voice.
The man remained expressionless. "Technically, this house belongs to Mr. Maxwell, and he has instructed us to have you leave. You have less than thirty minutes to pack your things. We are here to monitor you, and you are not allowed to touch the children's belongings or any of Mr. Maxwell's personal property."
I just stood there, my mind went completely blank, I couldn't process what I was hearing. First, he disappeared from our lives, then he took the children away from me. And now, he was throwing me out of the house.
Never, not even in my worst nightmare, had I imagined that one day Maxwell would treat me this way.
Before I could react, one of the men brushed past me and walked into the apartment.
"Your time has already started," he said. "If I were you, I'd make good use of the little time you have."
His words snapped me out of my shock. I hurried into the living room and grabbed my phone with trembling hands. My fingers shook so badly that I almost dropped it while trying to dial Adele's number.
She answered on the very first ring. "Maxwell has sent men to throw me out of the house," I said, my voice trembling.
"What?!" she shouted. "Damn that son of a bitch. I am coming right away."
After ending the call, I slipped my phone into my pocket and slowly made my way upstairs. Every step felt heavier than the last as I tried to gather the little I could take with me. My chest ached so badly that it felt difficult to breathe.
The moment I reached the staircase, two of the men followed behind me without saying a word. I couldn't believe this was happening.
I was being forced out of the house that held countless memories of my children. Every room carried a piece of them. Their laughter still echoed in my mind, and now I wasn't even being given the dignity of leaving on my own terms.
I wiped away the tears that kept falling and forced myself to continue packing.
A few minutes later, the bedroom door opened, Adele and Adrian hurried inside. "I called him immediately after you hung up," Adele said as she rushed over and wrapped her arms tightly around me.
The moment she hugged me, the strength I had been holding onto disappeared. I broke down against her shoulder, crying silently for several minutes while she gently rubbed my back.
"You have less than fifteen minutes," one of the men reminded us coldly.
I slowly pulled away from Adele, wiping my eyes. "Come on," she said softly. "Let's finish packing. We will deal with all of this later."
I nodded weakly. The three of us hurried around the room, packing everything they allowed me to take. We worked as quickly as we could, stuffing clothes and personal belongings into suitcases while the men watched every move we made.
When I finally zipped up the last suitcase, I turned toward one of the men. "Please," I begged. "Just let me see the kids' room one last time."
He didn't even hesitate. "No."
His answer was firm and emotionless, I stared at him for a few seconds, hoping he would change his mind but didn't.
Once the thirty minutes were over, they ordered us downstairs and escorted us out of the house without giving me another chance to look back.
My heart shattered with every step I took away from the front door. Outside, I walked toward my car, the one Maxwell had bought for me some time ago.
Before I could reach it, one of the men stepped in front of me, blocking my path. "I already told you," he said. "You are not allowed to take anything you didn't buy with your own money."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"Do you have the receipt for the car?" he asked. "Is the vehicle registered in your name?"
My lips parted, but no words came out. After a long moment, I slowly took a step back and shook my head. So this was what leaving Maxwell Sinclair had reduced me to. Complete humiliation. Every ounce of respect I once believed existed between us had vanished.
"Come on," Adrian said gently. "Just leave the car. You know you can always get a better one if you want."
"To hell with Maxwell Sinclair and his cars," Adele snapped. "He thinks he's won, but we are coming for him."
She reached for my hand and squeezed it reassuringly. With nowhere else to go, we carried my suitcases toward Adrian's car and began loading them into the trunk.
Just as we were placing the last suitcase inside, the gates to the mansion slowly swung open. Several reporters rushed through the entrance with cameras already raised.
The sound of shutters clicking filled the air as flashes exploded in every direction, capturing what would no doubt become tomorrow's biggest headline.
