Chapter 47 Forty-Seven
Chapter 47 Forty-Seven
Sydney
“Eric, it is my father’s company.” I took a step towards him, anger filling my chest. “And I’m not going to stand by and let you appoint criminals to help you still from it.”
He went very still. “What did you just say?”
Shit.
I’d said too much. Shaking my head, I grabbed my bag and walked past him. I needed to change and get some rest.
He followed me, yelling behind me. “Don’t you dare walk away from me! We’re not done talking about this.”
I rolled my eyes. “Well, I need a shower.” I hissed without locking back, climbing up the stairs. “We can have this conversation later.” I pushed the door open to our bedroom.
“No! ” He grabbed my arm, spinning me around. His grip was almost painful. “We’re talking about this now.”
My eyes darted between his hand and his face. “Let go of me Eric.”
“Not until you tell me what the hell has gotten into you. When did you start pulling stuff like this? Usually, you’d talk to me first! You trusted me and you fucking supported me as a good wife should.” His grip tightened. “What’s gotten into you?”
I scoffed. I wanted to say that he killed me. If he hadn’t killed me then maybe nothing would have gotten into me.
“I’m still supporting you Eric.” I sighed, instead. “Just not on this issue. Now, let me go!”
He let go, shoving me slightly and I stumbled back, my eyes wide. I caught the doorframe, my heart racing.
“What would Miles have said if he saw you do that? Can’t you be a father for once?”
His eyes flashed. “I don’t give a fuck about Miles right now! I care about my wife who has lost her goddamn mind!”
I glared at him and walked into the bedroom, heaving. I tossed my jacket, bag, and phone on the bed. Opening my closet, I pulled out a pair of jeans and a sweater.
“What’s happening to you?” He continued, following me. He wasn’t even sounding angry anymore. Just genuinely confused.
And it made sense. Usually, I could not stand his anger towards me. I would have begged and crawled, pleading with him to forgive me. Now, I couldn’t care less.
I shrugged off my blouse, watching his eyes settle on my bra. “Maybe if you tried being a better husband, I wouldn’t lose my mind.” I glared at him.
His eyes snapped back to my face. “That’s…that’s not what is happening.”
“Isn’t it?” I unzipped my pants, stepping out of them. “When was the last time you asked how I was doing? Really asked and actually listened and did something nice for me?”
“Sydney…”
I smiled, reaching for the towel. “Yup. Thought as much. And you’re right. Let’s stop pretending that this marriage is something it’s not and we can…”
“Oh for God’s sake!” He cried, clutching his head. “You’re fucking insane! You can’t say you want a divorce when we’ve had plans…”
“Yes I can and I’m getting the damn divorce!” I snapped, heaving.
I was having too much fun throwing it all in his face. Mostly because I knew he wouldn’t leave. He was too greedy and too pathetic to. His face went white and then red.
“What? Sydney, we’re working on us. Are we not?”
“How?” I balked, letting out a bitter laugh. “It doesn’t seem like we’re getting better. We’re yelling at each other without caring if our child….”
I trailed off as my phone started ringing and both of us turned to look at it. The screen lit up with the caller ID.
Bryce Westin.
My heart sank. His eyes flashed, something ugly dancing on his face.
“It’s him, isn’t it?” His voice dropped, his eyes never leaving mine. “It’s Bryce Westin.”
I rolled my eyes feigning exasperation. “Eric..”
“That’s what this is about isn’t it?” He walked towards me and I took a step back. “That’s why you’ve changed and you don’t care about our marriage anymore. It’s because of him. Isn’t it?”
“Eric. This has nothing to do with Bryce. We’re just….”
“Bullshit!” He slapped the wall, his voice rising and I flinched. “You think I’m dumb? I saw him playing hero at that fucking summit, Sydney. I see the way you look at him. You two were flirting in the boardroom after humiliating me, weren’t you?”
The world went weirdly silent and suddenly it was rushing in my ears.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Eric.”
“Oh, shut up! Everyone saw it Sydney! The whole board saw you practically drooling over Bryce Westin.”
I eyed the phone which was ringing a second time and moved towards the bed. Eric stood in front of me, blocking me.
“Is he why you want a divorce?” He yelled, grabbing my arm again. “Have you been fucking him? Is that what this is?”
His hand dug into my flesh and I winced. “Get out of my way!”
“Answer the damn question!” He yelled louder, freeing my arms and grabbing my shoulders. “Are you fucking sleeping with Bryce Westin? Is that why you’re asking for a divorce?”
“No!” I shot back. “I’m asking for a divorce because you’re a terrible husband and you let your family make a fool out of your wife. Now, let me go!”
I shoved him back, hard enough for him to stumble, and grabbed my phone. My heart was thudding wildly in my chest. I needed to call Celine or my Dad. Eric was starting to get weird.
“I don’t believe you!” He yelled as I wrapped the towel around me, heading for the door.
“I don’t believe shit you say anymore! You’ve become a liar, Sydney. A manipulative, conniving ….”
I shut the door behind me, silencing his voice for a while. Hurrying down the staircase, I tapped the green icon, placing the phone against my ear.
“Hey,”
His voice came back in a raspy texture that made the world go silent. “Hey, Sydney. What you doing?”
