Chapter 216 216. Elven blood
Chapter 216 216. Elven blood
Hope
I close my eyes.
The massive wolf above me rears back, jaws opening wide, hot breath washing over my face.
This is it.
My wolf goes still inside me—not in surrender, but in defiance.
My energy is low, pain rising but I'm not ready to give in.
I feel the tremor of his growl through the stone beneath my back. Blood pools warm beneath my shoulder. My vision swims, but I force my eyes open one last time.
If I die, I’ll die looking at my enemy.
His teeth descend—
And the night explodes.
A sharp, ringing sound slices through the air, like crystal shattering. Light—bright, silver-blue light—slashes across the chamber.
The wolf above me jerks violently.
An arrow made of pure luminescence pierces through his shoulder and pins him to the wall.
He howls.
Not in triumph.
In agony.
I blink, dazed.
Shapes pour through the tunnel entrance behind the rogues—tall, armored figures moving with impossible grace. Their blades glow with the same ethereal light as the arrow.
Elves.
For a heartbeat, I think I’m hallucinating.
Then another rogue falls, cut down by a shimmering spear.
The air changes—less suffocating, more charged. Ancient. Powerful.
The massive wolf scrambles off me, snarling at the new threat.
A woman steps into view, her silver hair flowing like moonlight, eyes bright with something far older than the tunnels around us.
“Elena,” I breathe.
She moves to me in a blur, her mate at her side—tall, golden-eyed, radiating strength that presses against my skin like a living thing.
The battle rages around us as Elena kneels and gently lifts me from the stone.
Her hands glow where they touch my wounds.
“Of course I came for you,” she says softly.
Her voice is warmth in the middle of chaos.
“I didn’t know if you could,” I rasp.
Her lips curve faintly. “You are not alone in this world, Hope. Not anymore.”
My wolf lifts her head.
Mother.
Elena’s gaze flickers, like she hears it too.
Her mate supports me as Elena’s power knits some of the damage—not all, but enough to breathe without drowning in pain.
Behind them, the elves move like living blades. Precise. Deadly. Coordinated.
Rogues fall.
Emma limps toward us, blood streaking her fur before she shifts back, chest heaving. “Well,” she pants, “about time someone else joined the party.”
I let out a weak laugh.
Elena rises, helping me to my feet. “Can you stand?”
“I can fight.”
Her eyes search mine, measuring.
Then she nods once.
That’s all the permission I need.
I reach inward.
Past the pain.
Past the chaos.
To the bond.
Keith.
It takes only a second to find him.
Our connection is a blazing thread of heat and fury somewhere above us, pulsing with strain.
He’s alive.
But he’s locked in battle.
“He’s near the main clearing,” I say, already moving. “With Elira.”
Elena stiffens at the name.
Her mate’s jaw tightens.
“We go,” Elena says simply.
We run.
Through broken tunnels, past fallen bodies, up into the cold night air.
The forest clearing ahead is a war zone.
The moon hangs high, silver light bathing blood-soaked earth.
On the left side of the clearing, Lina stands with her arms outstretched, shadows writhing around her like living serpents. The darkness bends and distorts, swallowing entire clusters of enemies and disorienting them.
Her face is pale with strain.
But she holds.
The elves surge past us, joining the fray, their glowing weapons cutting through the opposition. The tide shifts almost immediately.
We gain ground.
And then I see it.
At the center of the clearing stands a circle.
Thorne. Silas. Tessa. Xavior. Riven. Jace. Tao. Jeb. Ethan.
They form a wide ring, spaced evenly, faces grim and focused.
Between them—
An invisible force field hums in the air like heat distortion.
Inside it—
Keith.
And Elira.
They move so fast they’re almost blurs of claw and fang and power.
Keith is fully shifted, his massive dark wolf snapping and lunging with controlled fury.
Elira’s wolf is pale, almost luminous under the moonlight, her movements sharp and vicious.
Energy crackles between them every time they collide.
“They caged them,” Emma breathes.
“To keep anyone from interfering,” Elena says quietly.
My heart pounds painfully.
I step forward, but the invisible barrier hums and pushes against me like solid glass.
Keith slams Elira into the ground.
The earth cracks beneath them.
She twists, impossibly flexible, and rakes her claws across his flank. Blood sprays.
I flinch.
“Keith!” I shout, though I know he can’t hear me through the field.
Inside, his eyes flash molten gold.
He lunges again.
But Elira is smiling.
Even in wolf form, I see it in the tilt of her head.
“She’s not losing,” I whisper.
“No,” Elena agrees. “She isn’t.”
Her mate stands by her, his elven eyes seeing clearly what we could not. “That creature… it is bastardization. A monster made of elven blood and dark magic.”
“Elven blood?” I ask.
He nods. “It was one of the practices that forced us to leave this realm. Certain Lycan tribes found the power in elven blood and were killing elves to get it.”
I look at the creature Elira had become and can't imagine the horror of it all.
How could someone do this to their child? Mess with their inner beast, twist it into something unrecognizable.
It was unimaginable.
The battle outside the circle intensifies. The elves drive back the remaining enemies. Lina’s shadows consume another wave.
But inside the cage, it’s a different war.
Raw.
Personal.
Keith barrels into Elira again, jaws clamping onto her shoulder. She howls, but instead of retreating, she surges forward, slamming her skull into his.
The crack echoes.
He stumbles.
My wolf snarls inside me. He is ours.
“I know.”
Elira pivots and sweeps his legs out from under him. Keith crashes to the ground.
She leaps.
He rolls just in time, her claws gouging deep trenches in the dirt instead of his throat.
The circle around them flickers.
The warriors holding it strain visibly.
Tessa’s knees tremble.
Riven grits his teeth, sweat pouring down his temple.
The power maintaining the barrier is immense.
Elira lunges again.
Keith meets her midair.
They slam together with a shockwave that ripples through the field and sends a blast of wind across the clearing.
Several of the circles stagger.
The cage flickers violently.
“Hold it!” Thorne roars.
They do.
For now.
Keith’s jaws close around Elira’s foreleg and he wrenches, throwing her across the enclosure.
She hits hard—but rises instantly.
Too instantly.
Something dark pulses beneath her pale fur.
A power that doesn’t belong to her alone.
My stomach drops.
The battle outside surges again as reinforcements try to break through, but the elves intercept them. Silver blades flash. Light sings.
We’re winning out here.
But in there?
I don’t know.
Elira’s creatures lowers her head.
Keith does the same.
They circle.
The tension is suffocating.
Then they charge simultaneously.
This time, Elira feints.
Keith commits.
She pivots at the last second and slams into his side with brutal force.
He goes down hard.
The earth trembles.
My breath leaves my lungs.
She’s on him in an instant, claws pinning his shoulders.
He snarls and bucks, but she presses down with unnatural strength.
“Keith!” I scream, trying to run to him but Elena stops me.
He snaps at her throat and nearly catches it—but she jerks back and drives her claws into his chest.
He howls.
The sound tears through me like a blade.
The circle wavers.
Silas looks ready to run in and intercept Elira.
The invisible cage fractures—
The force field explodes outward in a wave of energy, throwing everyone back.
I hit the ground hard.
When I scramble up, chaos has swallowed the clearing.
The neat ring is gone.
The battle merges into one violent storm.
Elira stands over Keith, who struggles to rise.
She lifts one claw—
And then—
A blur of dark motion streaks across the clearing.
So fast I barely register it.
A figure cloaked in shadow slams into Elira from behind.
The impact sends her flying off Keith.
She crashes across the ground, skidding through dirt and blood.
The dark figure lands between them.
Tall.
Cloaked.
Radiating something colder than moonlight.
Elira rises slowly, shaking dirt from her pale fur.
Her eyes burn with fury.
The figure turns slightly, just enough for moonlight to catch sharp features and eyes like obsidian.
I don’t recognize him.
But Elena stiffens beside me.
Keith staggers to his feet.
The dark stranger says nothing.
He simply lifts his hand—
And purple whips of sparkling flames coil around his fingers like living smoke.
Elira snarls.
The clearing holds its breath.
And I realize—
The war just changed.
