Chapter 209 209. Glorious death
Chapter 209 209. Glorious death
Elira
Victory floods my veins as screams tear through the settlement and the clash of steel and claw rings out beneath the blood-red sky. Fire licks at the thatched roofs. Warriors snarl and shift mid-stride, bones cracking, fur ripping through skin as my pack and the Silver Fang Pack carve a path straight through the heart of Keith’s precious territory.
This is what I was born for.
This is what they all underestimated.
“Push forward!” I command, my voice cutting clean through the chaos.
My warriors obey instantly. They form a protective arc around me, blades flashing, teeth bared. A wolf lunges from the right—one of Keith’s chiefs—and is intercepted before he can reach me. My warrior tears out his throat with efficient brutality.
The metallic scent of blood thickens the air.
And beneath it—
There.
A pulse.
Deep. Ancient. Calling to me.
The Heart.
My lycan stirs, her presence coiling through my mind like silver mist.
Closer, she whispers, low and hungry. It beats for us.
“I know,” I murmur under my breath, stepping over a fallen body.
The settlement’s center lies ahead—stone structures etched with old magic, older than Keith, older than his pathetic claim to dominance. The chiefs thought proximity gave them power. Fools. Power belongs to the one strong enough to seize it.
And I am very strong.
A warrior stumbles toward me, bloodied but grinning. “The eastern flank is secured, Alpha.”
“Hold it,” I say. “No one retreats. Not tonight.”
His eyes flash gold in acknowledgment before he shifts and launches back into the fray.
The pulse intensifies.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
Like a second heartbeat echoing in my skull.
My entire life has led here—every humiliation, every whispered doubt, every alliance forged in blood. They called me ambitious. Ruthless. Unnatural.
Good.
A narrow path opens between the stone dwellings. I step through it, my boots crunching over gravel and ash.
I feel it now. Just ahead.
I lift my chin slightly and catch the eye of Darius—one of my most trusted warriors.
He waits for it.
I give a single nod.
He disappears instantly, melting into the shadows between structures without a sound.
Preparation.
Contingency.
Everything I tried to teach Camille. He still has alot to learn. Hopefully today will be a lesson to him about the true meaning of sacrifice. Of how far one needs to go to gain everything.
A sudden noise snaps from my left—a crunch of gravel, too deliberate to be accidental.
I turn slowly.
Hope steps from behind a scorched pillar, brushing ash from her sleeve as though this entire battlefield is a minor inconvenience.
She smiles.
Cocky. Arrogant. Radiating self-righteous defiance.
“Well,” she says lightly, glancing around at the carnage. “This is convenient. You practically delivered yourself.”
I tilt my head.
“Convenient?” I echo, amused. “Sweet girl, do you really think you and that welp will leave hear alive? Tell me how long do you think it will take for Keith to break?”
Her eyes flash. “You made a mistake walking straight into our territory.”
“I walked exactly where I intended to.”
My lycan hums with dark pleasure.
She reeks of fear beneath the bravado.
Hope folds her arms. “You’re surrounded, Elira. You’ve overplayed your hand.”
I laugh softly.
“Surrounded?” I gesture lazily toward the chaos beyond her. My warriors drive Keith’s forces backward inch by inch. The Silver Fang Pack moves like a silver tide through the settlement. “Take another look.”
Her jaw tightens.
“You won’t leave here,” she says.
“I’m not planning to.”
The air shifts.
Hope moves first—faster than most would expect. She lunges for my throat, claws extending mid-shift.
But she never reaches me.
A blur of dark hair and snapping jaws collides with her from the side.
My attendant, Lyra.
The two females crash to the ground in a tangle of limbs and teeth. Hope snarls, twisting, trying to break free. Lyra answers with a vicious bite aimed for her shoulder.
I do not step back.
I simply watch.
Hope shoves Lyra off with surprising strength and scrambles to her feet, eyes blazing gold now.
“You hide behind your lackeys?” she spits.
I arch a brow.
“Lyra,” I say calmly.
My attendant freezes instantly despite the blood running down her forearm.
“Bring her to me.”
Hope’s lips curl. “I’m not your pet.”
“Not yet,” I reply smoothly.
Lyra attacks again—this time with precision. She feints left, then sweeps Hope’s legs out from under her. They slam into the dirt. Lyra pins her, forearm across Hope’s throat.
Hope thrashes, claws raking across Lyra’s side. Blood sprays.
My lycan snarls approval.
Strong. She fights well.
“She does,” I murmur. “But not well enough.”
I step closer.
Hope’s breathing is ragged now, but her gaze remains defiant.
“You’re insane,” she growls. “You think taking the Heart will make them follow you?”
“It won’t make them,” I say softly.
I crouch beside her.
“It will ensure they have no choice.”
Her pupils flare.
“You don’t even understand what it is.”
“Oh, I understand perfectly.”
The Heart is more than power. It is legitimacy. It is ancient authority. It is the symbol and source of dominion over every lycan chief foolish enough to believe strength alone is enough.
With it, no one will ever challenge me again.
A deep, thunderous growl rolls through the clearing.
The ground trembles.
Every hair on my arms rises.
Hope’s head snaps toward the sound—and for the first time, relief flickers across her face.
Through the smoke, he emerges.
Massive.
White as winter.
Keith.
In full lycan form, he is monstrous—towering over the others, muscle rippling beneath thick white fur, eyes burning like twin suns. He barrels through warriors without slowing, sending bodies flying as he charges toward us.
My pack moves to intercept—
He throws them aside.
Hope gasps. “Keith!”
My lycan surges forward inside me, eager.
Finally.
I rise smoothly to my feet.
“Darius,” I whisper.
Right on cue, he reappears at the edge of the clearing.
“It’s ready,” he says.
Perfect timing.
Keith’s massive form closes the distance in seconds. His roar splits the air as he locks onto Hope pinned beneath Lyra.
He launches.
Before he reaches us, I lift my hand.
Magic unfurls from my palm in a shimmering arc—silver and sharp as shattered glass.
The barrier slams into place just as Keith collides with it.
The impact shakes the ground.
Energy ripples outward in a blinding wave.
Keith snarls, fangs bared inches from the invisible wall. He slams into it again, harder. The barrier holds, crackling but intact.
Hope’s eyes widen.
“You—”
I smile slowly.
“Preparation,” I say.
Keith shifts partially, his upper body becoming more human while retaining the monstrous size and claws. His voice is raw thunder.
“Release her.”
His power presses against the barrier, testing it. The magic hums in response.
I step forward until I’m face-to-face with him, separated only by the shimmering wall of energy.
“Come now, Keith,” I purr. “I’m sure we can work this out.”
His gaze drops briefly to Hope struggling beneath Lyra, then back to me. Pure fury.
“If you touch her—”
“I already have.”
He slams into the barrier again.
Cracks of light spiderweb across its surface but do not break.
My lycan laughs in my mind. He will understand how powerless he is.
Yes, he will. I murmur.
Keith’s eyes narrow. “What do you want?”
Straight to negotiation. Good.
“I want the Heart.”
His expression darkens instantly.
“You’ll never control it.”
“Oh, I don’t need to control it.” I step closer, lowering my voice so only he can hear. “I need to claim it.”
Hope struggles harder. “Keith, don’t—”
Lyra presses harder against her throat.
Keith’s claws scrape down the barrier, sparks flying.
“You think that artifact will make you untouchable?” he demands.
“I know it will.”
He studies me, searching for hesitation.
He won’t find any.
“You’ll tear the packs apart,” he says.
“They’re already fractured.”
“You’ll start a war that never ends.”
I glance back at the burning settlement.
“Come now Keith. Even you must know the type of power the heart weilds. Once it is in my possession it won’t take long for people to realize standing against me equals death. Then there will be no more war, no more opposition.”
The Heart pulses again—closer now. Just beyond the stone structure behind me.
So near I can taste its power.
Keith sees the flicker in my eyes.
“You won’t survive binding to it,” he says quietly.
For a split second, silence falls between us.
My lycan stills.
Is he lying?
I smile.
“Then it will be a glorious death.”
His jaw tightens.
“Let her go,” he says again, but this time there’s something different beneath the demand.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For her.
Interesting.
I straighten.
“Here is my offer,” I say smoothly. “Stand down your remaining chiefs. Order them to withdraw. Publicly concede this territory.”
His eyes blaze.
“And in return?”
“I allow her to live.”
Hope freezes.
“You can’t trust her!” she snaps.
I look down at her.
“She’s right,” I admit lightly. “But you don’t have better options.”
Keith’s breathing grows heavier. The barrier strains as he presses against it again, testing for weakness.
Darius moves closer behind me, ready.
The Heart calls.
Take it, my lycan urges. End this.
Keith closes his eyes briefly, calculating.
“How about a counter offer,” a voice calls behind him.
The voice of the female whose death is worth almost as much as this war.
Tiriana steps from behind Keith, the hearts power pulsing form somewhere on her body.
I laugh softly. “ And what are you willing to offer?”
“An exchange. Me for Hope.” She stares at me with a defiance I want to crush.
“What makes you think your so valuable.”
“Tirianna, no!” Hope shouts.
“There is no heart of atheren without me. At least not while I’m alive.”
“No!” I shout unwilling to believe she did what I think she’s done.
“Come now Elira, I thought you were excited to finally get your claws in me?”
Time is thinning.
Other warriors are beginning to notice the standoff. The battlefield shifts, attention pulling toward us.
This is the moment.
The pivot.
“What did you do?” Keith asks beside her.
“I put a contingency in place, “she says. “All guardian’s have the ability to tie there lives to the heart to prevent it from being taken.”
I lean in closer to the barrier, so close I can see my reflection in Keith’s golden eyes.
“She merged herself with it,” I say quietly. My smile widens. “Now, I can maximize my time. What do you say Keith? Will you honor this trade.”
The crowd around us grows. Lycan chieftain stand at his back.
Tiranna nods at Keith.
He turns to me. “We accept.”
With a flick of my wrist, the barrier pulses brighter, reinforcing itself.
I turn slightly, addressing Darius without taking my eyes off Keith.
“Bring Hope to the border/.”
He nods and grabs her.
Hope’s breathing turns frantic.
“Keith, she’ll kill her. Please, no—”
“It’s alright,” Tirianna tells her.
Hope stands in front of the barrier, Tiranna mirroring her.
Everything in my life converges into this single breath.
I meet Keith’s furious gaze and let him see it—the certainty, the inevitability.
“Trade them,” I murmur.
A small window opens in the shield. Hope steps out and Tirianna comes through.
