Chapter 207 207.The eye of the storm
Hope

The medical building smells like antiseptic and iron.
Iron from blood. From fear.
I sit cross-legged on the thin mat in the corner of the triage room, my palms resting against my knees, eyes closed. Across from me, Emma watches with that steady, assessing gaze of hers. She hasn’t slept much either. None of us have. Not since the children were taken.
Not since Elena.
“Slow your breathing,” Emma murmurs.
I draw in air through my nose, count to four, let it out slowly. My wolf shifts beneath my skin, restless and sharp.
You push too hard, she growls softly inside my head.
“I don’t have time to go slow,” I whisper back, not caring that Emma can hear me talking to myself. She knows better than anyone what it means.
Two days. I’ve spent two days trying to reopen the power link to Elena. It had sparked once—bright, blinding, terrifying—and then snapped like a thread pulled too tight. Since then, nothing but static and a hollow ache behind my ribs.
But my gut says we’re close.
Close to finding them.
Close to the eye of the storm.
“Reach for her,” Emma instructs. “Not with force. With memory.”
I nod.
I let myself remember Elena’s laugh. The way her magic feels—like frost across warm skin. I press inward, deeper, searching for that faint silver current that once braided with mine.
There.
A flicker.
My breath stutters.
I push—
Pain lances through my skull, white-hot and blinding. The room tilts. My wolf snarls, claws scraping against my bones.
Too much! You’ll tear us apart!
I grit my teeth and push harder.
“I see—” My voice breaks. I see darkness. A door. Iron bars.
And then—
Nothing.
The connection snaps again, and I pitch forward, catching myself on my hands.
Emma is at my side instantly. “Hope.”
“I almost had her.” My voice shakes with frustration. “She’s close. I can feel her. They’re moving her—somewhere north, I think—”
“Hope.” Emma grips my shoulders. “You’ve been at this for thirty minutes straight. Your pulse is racing.”
“I can’t stop.”
“Yes, you can.” Her voice hardens. “And you will.”
My wolf bristles.
We don’t rest while our young are caged.
Emma’s hand slides down to my stomach, gentle but firm.
“And what about this one?” she asks quietly.
The reminder hits like a physical blow.
Life. Inside me.
A fragile heartbeat that doesn’t deserve to be sacrificed to my recklessness.
I swallow.
“I just need five more minutes.”
“You need food and water,” Emma counters. “And ten minutes of stillness. You’re not helping Elena if you collapse.”
She’s right.
I hate that she’s right.
I lean back against the wall, breathing hard, letting my head fall back. The fluorescent lights buzz overhead. Outside, the settlement hums with uneasy quiet.
Too quiet.
My wolf lifts her head.
Storm coming.
“I know,” I murmur.
Emma hands me a cup of water. “Drink.”
I take it. My hands are shaking.
For a moment, there’s silence.
Then—
The world explodes.
Glass shatters in a violent, screaming crash as every window along the east wall blows inward. The sound is deafening. Shards rain down like knives.
Warriors pour through the broken frames.
Not ours.
Dark leathers. Red insignia. Eyes blazing with intent.
“Attack!” someone shouts.
The medical aides move instantly, training snapping into place. Half of them rush toward the patients—rolling beds, dragging stretchers, forming a human shield. The other half grab scalpels, IV poles, hidden blades.
Emma doesn’t hesitate.
“Hope, on me!”
My wolf surges forward.
Finally.
I’m on my feet before I consciously move. The first attacker lunges for a nurse—big, broad-shouldered male with a scar down his cheek.
I intercept him.
My fist slams into his throat. I feel cartilage crunch beneath my knuckles. He stumbles back, choking. I shift partially, claws slicing free just long enough to rake across his chest.
Blood sprays.
He drops.
Another comes at me from the side. Emma meets him halfway, her leg snapping up into a vicious kick that cracks against his jaw. He spins, dazed.
We move together, back to back.
“Left!” she calls.
I duck as a blade whistles over my head. My elbow drives into a ribcage. I twist, grab the attacker’s wrist, and snap it.
He screams.
The building is chaos—patients crying, metal clanging, snarls and battle cries filling the air.
A heavy body slams into me from behind.
I hit the floor hard.
Air rushes from my lungs. The male straddles me, fist cocked. I see his eyes—cold, calculating.
He doesn’t want to kill me.
He wants to take me.
Rage explodes through me.
Mine to destroy, my wolf roars.
I surge upward, shifting fully this time. Bones crack, muscles ripple, fur bursting through skin. My wolf snaps her jaws inches from his face.
He jerks back—but not fast enough.
My teeth sink into his shoulder.
He howls.
Another pair of hands grab me from behind. They’re coordinated. One distracts, one binds.
A stun rod crackles against my side.
Pain sears through me, forcing me back into human form.
I scream.
Through blurred vision, I see Emma fighting three at once. She’s a whirlwind of fury.
Then someone clubs her from behind.
“Emma!” I shout.
She crumples.
Something inside me fractures.
Two males seize my arms, dragging me toward the shattered windows.
“Move!” one snarls.
They haul me through the broken frame, shards slicing my skin. The cold air outside slams into me.
The settlement is a battlefield.
Smoke rises from three different buildings. Warriors clash in every direction. I catch sight of our pack insignia, bloodied but fighting.
The males drag me across the dirt.
“Let me go!” I snarl, kicking back. My heel connects with a knee. I hear a grunt but they don’t loosen their grip.
“Alpha’s orders,” one mutters.
I bare my teeth.
“You’ll die for this.”
They laugh.
That’s when the third shadow moves.
Fast. Silent.
Bea comes out of nowhere.
She slams into the male on my left, tackling him with brutal force. They hit the ground in a roll of claws and teeth.
The other one releases me to strike at her.
Big mistake.
I pivot and drive my fist into his temple. He staggers. I grab his collar, yank him down, and knee him in the face. Once. Twice.
My wolf surges forward again and I let her.
We finish him together.
Bea rises from the other body, chest heaving. Blood streaks her cheek.
“You good?” she demands.
I nod once, scanning the chaos.
That’s when I see it clearly.
This isn’t just the medical building.
It’s everywhere.
Our homes. The training grounds. The central square.
The entire settlement is under attack.
My gut sinks.
Eye of the storm, my wolf whispers.
“We have to get you out,” Bea says sharply.
“I’m not leaving.”
She grabs my arm. “You are pregnant, Hope!”
The word cuts through the noise like a blade.
Life.
Inside me.
I hesitate.
More attackers rush us.
We don’t have time to argue.
We fight.
Shoulder to shoulder, we cut through them. I feel something inside me settle—not fear, not exactly.
Clarity.
Stevie joins us, sliding into position at my right.
“Safe house!” she shouts. “South tunnel!”
We form a tight triangle and push forward.
I see our warriors regrouping. I see our wounded being dragged to safety.
And then—
I see her.
Elira.
Moving through the battlefield like she owns it.
Calm. Controlled. Untouched.
Her eyes find mine across the chaos.
Cold satisfaction flickers there.
This is her.
This is the hand behind it.
My wolf lunges toward her inside my mind.
Kill her.
Bea tugs my arm. “Hope! Move!”
Safe house.
Or end this.
I think of the children.
Of Elena.
Of Emma lying unconscious inside the medical building.
If Elira escapes, this won’t stop.
“She’s the source,” I breathe.
“Hope—” Stevie warns.
I pull free.
“I’m ending this.”
Bea curses. “Don’t you dare!”
But I’m already moving.
They try to follow.
A wave of attackers slams between us, cutting them off.
“Hope!” Bea screams.
I don’t look back.
My wolf runs with me, every step fueled by fury and purpose. I dodge blades, duck under swinging fists, leap over fallen bodies.
Elira watches me approach.
She doesn’t retreat.
She smiles.
“You should have chosen safety,” she calls over the din.
“You should have chosen mercy,” I fire back.
We meet in the center of the ruined square.
Everything narrows.
Just her.
Just me.
“You can’t protect them all,” she says softly. “You can’t even protect what’s inside you.”
Rage explodes, but I hold it tight.
“You’re wrong.”
She moves first.
Fast. Precise.
Our blows collide with a crack that echoes across the square. Power sparks between us—mine raw and primal, hers sharp and controlled.
My wolf claws forward.
For our children.
We trade strikes—fists, elbows, bursts of magic that ripple the air. She’s strong. Stronger than before.
But so am I.
“You’re too emotional,” she taunts.
“And you’re already dead,” I snarl.
I feint left and drive my palm into her sternum, channeling every ounce of power I have. Energy explodes outward in a shockwave.
She staggers.
For the first time, uncertainty flickers in her eyes.
Around us, the battle still rages.
But this—
This is the heart of it.
And I will not fall.
Not today.
Not while my children are out there.
Not while life grows inside me.
My wolf rises fully beside me in my mind, massive and unyielding.
We end this.
I step forward.
And I don’t hesitate.
