Fifty Three

The dim light of Louis's office cast long shadows across the room as he swirled a glass of whiskey in his hand. His face was etched with lines of exhaustion and self-loathing, emotions he tried to bury with every reckless decision he made. Natalie sat across from him, perched on the arm of a leather chair, watching him closely. She wore a triumphant smirk, sensing his crumbling resolve.

"You're letting your emotions cloud your judgment, Louis," she said softly, though the edge in her voice was unmistakable. "This is the only way forward. You know that."

Louis didn't respond immediately. He stared into his glass, as if the swirling liquid might hold the answers he couldn't find within himself. "I've already crossed too many lines," he muttered. "What difference does one more make?"

"Exactly," Natalie purred, leaning closer. "One more step, and it'll all fall into place. We'll have everything we've ever wanted."

Everything she wanted. Louis knew that much. Yet he didn't argue. Perhaps he didn't care anymore.

Meanwhile, across town, Liam paced his study, his mind a chaotic whirlwind of thoughts. Dandelion's words rang in his ears: "I heard a rumor. People are saying Daisy might still be alive."

It had been a casual remark, dropped over coffee during one of their rare sibling catch-ups. But it had struck Liam like a thunderbolt. He couldn't dismiss it. His sister's presence, or lack thereof, had left a void in his life so vast that even the faintest whisper of her being alive ignited a desperate hope.

Now, he sat down at his desk, surrounded by a pile of files and reports he'd gathered over the past few hours. He had connections-powerful ones-and he wasn't above using them to dig deeper into these rumors.

"She can't be gone," he whispered to himself, running a hand through his hair. "Not like this."

Memories of Daisy flooded his mind: her laughter echoing through their family home, her fiery determination when they argued, the way she lit up a room just by walking into it. His chest tightened, grief mingling with a sliver of hope he dared not embrace fully.

He pulled out his phone and made a call. "I need everything you've got on a recent trafficking bust," he said curtly to the voice on the other end. "Particularly if there were any... unusual circumstances."

The person hesitated. "Sir, that operation was classified-"

"Spare me the details. Just get me what I need," Liam snapped.

As he hung up, he stared at a grainy photograph on his desk. It was from an intercepted news feed: a masked figure walking away from the wreckage of the trafficking ring Daisy had destroyed. There was something hauntingly familiar about the figure's posture, the slight tilt of the head.

"Daisy," he murmured, his voice breaking. "If it's really you... where are you?"

Back in Louis's world, he sank deeper into Natalie's schemes. The latest involved aligning with another unsavory faction, one he knew would further tarnish the Croft name. Yet, instead of fighting it, he allowed himself to be swept along, numbing his guilt with alcohol and work.

"You're quiet," Natalie observed as they drove to their next meeting.

Louis glanced at her, his eyes hollow. "What's there to say?"

"You could thank me," she said, her tone teasing but with an undercurrent of irritation. "I'm the one keeping you afloat."

Louis let out a bitter laugh. "Keeping me afloat? Or dragging me under?"

Her expression hardened. "Watch yourself, Louis. You might regret saying that."

As the car pulled up to their destination, Louis stepped out without another word, his thoughts consumed by memories of Daisy. He didn't realize how much he had failed her until it was too late. Now, he was stuck in this nightmare, unable to turn back.

In his study, Liam received a call. "We found something," the voice on the other end said.

"What is it?" Liam asked, gripping the phone tightly.

"There's been talk about a woman who's been making waves in the underworld. She's masked, but her methods... they're brutal. Calculated. Some say she might be connected to the Sovereign."

Liam's breath hitched. The Sovereign. A shadowy figure he'd heard whispers about, someone powerful enough to pull strings across continents. If Daisy was alive and connected to them...

"Send me everything you have," Liam said urgently.

As he hung up, his mind raced. If there was even the slightest chance this woman was Daisy, he had to find her. But what would he say? How could he face her after failing to protect her?

For the first time in months, hope began to outweigh his guilt.
