Chapter 72: This Trick of Hers is Really Mean
"Emily, come on, stop making a scene. We..."
"Hello, I need to report a break-in. Someone's trespassed and damaged my property!"
Emily cut James off, pulling out her phone and dialing 911.
James's face darkened at her words. "Emily, what are you doing?"
"Shut up!"
Annoyed, Emily jabbed him with a silver needle, rendering him temporarily speechless.
After giving her home address and James's location to the operator, she hung up.
James felt the needle prick and tried to speak, but nothing came out. He stared at Emily in disbelief, instinctively reaching to touch the spot where he'd been jabbed, silently questioning what she'd done.
Emily warned him, "That’s a silver needle in an acupuncture point. Don't touch it, or you could end up paralyzed. You always thought I wasn't skilled enough, right?"
James didn't dare move. His eyes, however, were filled with rage, ready to explode.
Emily then removed the needle. "There! Did I really need to go that far? Couldn't you just stay quiet while I made the call?"
James's expression was complicated, his gaze icy as he looked at her. "I never thought you'd use what you learned from Floyd on me. You've really become ruthless."
Emily shrugged, helpless. "You can't blame me. You act like you don't understand plain English!"
"I think you've lost your mind. I'm done talking to you!" James said, trying to leave.
"Hold on. You heard me call the cops. You can't leave just yet."
"What if I insist on leaving?"
James's voice was cold and firm.
At that moment, the villa door swung open again.
York appeared. "Ms. Johnson, do you need any assistance?"
Perfect timing—almost too perfect.
James's face turned even grimmer.
It was obvious this was deliberate.
And it was Daniel’s doing.
James had overestimated himself.
With Daniel’s status, the security was top-notch. He had been waiting near the door the whole time. Of course, Daniel knew everything.
York had reported to Daniel right away.
Daniel had instructed him to just watch and see what James would do.
After Emily left, Daniel had watched the surveillance footage himself and saw Emily calling the police.
He had chuckled, his usually cold demeanor melting like snow on a mountaintop. "Interesting! York, go assist her."
And so York arrived right on time.
Seeing York, Emily’s smile deepened. "Please keep an eye on James until the police arrive."
"And this, please hand it over to the police as well!"
Emily handed York the recording of James admitting to breaking into her house.
"Emily, you're shameless!" James was shaking with rage as he heard the recording.
Emily ignored him and said to York, "Thank you."
Then she walked past James without a glance, heading straight ahead.
If it were anyone else, James might have forced his way out.
But this was York, Daniel’s trusted aide, representing Daniel’s authority and face.
James watched Emily’s unyielding back, feeling defeated, and slumped to the ground.
York sighed softly.
He gave Emily a silent thumbs-up, admiring her a bit.
After returning, Emily chatted with Violette for a while.
Then she went to her room to freshen up.
As she lay in bed, she noticed a marked date on her calendar and remembered she had to participate in the Emberfall City medical competition soon. She had almost forgotten.
Just then, her phone rang.
It was Daniel.
Emily sat up straight, her tone respectful. “Mr. Smith, is there something you need?”
Could something have happened to his health again? Someone like him wouldn’t call unless it was important.
“James has been taken to the police station.”
Daniel’s voice was cool and magnetic, quite alluring.
Emily immediately thanked him. “Mr. Smith, I’m sorry if I caused any trouble for the Smith family.”
She had acted on impulse to make James realize his actions were inappropriate.
But she only now realized that Daniel, as part of the Smith family, would prioritize their interests.
Daniel chuckled lazily. “Isn’t it a bit late to ask that now? He’s not significant enough to affect the Smith family. Letting him face the consequences is necessary.”
He wasn’t blaming her; in fact, he supported her actions.
Emily felt relieved. “By the way, Mr. Smith, I need to travel to Emberfall City for a competition, so I won’t be able to prepare your medicinal meals tomorrow.”
She thought that instead of thanking him repeatedly, it would be better to make more detox pills for him after the competition.
So she changed the subject.
Daniel’s eyes darkened briefly before returning to calm. “Alright.”
“Mr. Smith, you should rest early. Goodnight!”
Emily was even more impressed with him for not being angry and sweetly wished him goodnight.
Daniel’s “goodnight” rolled around in his throat but didn’t come out.
But he couldn’t help but smile.
“York!”
When York entered, Daniel had already regained his usual aloof demeanor.
“Mr. Smith!”
“Find out what competition is happening in Emberfall City in the next few days,” Daniel ordered.
As his assistant and bodyguard, York knew a bit about it.
It was a medical competition sponsored by the Smith family to find a good doctor for Daniel.
“There’s a medical competition for new talents, funded by the Smith family. If there’s anything else, I’ll check.”
York reported truthfully.
A medical competition? That fit Emily’s profile.
“Check if Emily’s name is on the list. If not, see if she’s part of any other competition.”
York quickly opened his laptop and started searching.
York was skilled at many things, including computers.
He quickly checked the list but didn’t find Emily’s name among the participants. He was about to report, “Mr. Smith, there’s no…”
Just then, he noticed Emily’s name among the judges.
He frowned slightly.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. “What is it?”
“It seems Emily’s name isn’t on the participant list, but there’s an Emily among the judges. I think it’s unlikely Ms. Johnson would be a judge. It’s probably someone with the same name. I’ll check other competitions.”
York didn’t know Emily was the doctor treating Daniel, so his assumption was reasonable.
Daniel’s eyes gleamed with understanding. “No need to check other competitions. If it’s for me, I’ll go see for myself.”
York understood immediately. Daniel believed the judge was Emily.
He didn’t question Daniel’s decision and went to notify the competition organizers.
