Chapter 276 Sharing Joy with Others, Joy Doubles
"Matilda, Mr. Smith forgot to bring his change of clothes to the bathroom. Come over here and help deliver them to Mr. Smith!"
Since Oliver was a man and Daniel didn't want him doing this, then Matilda, as Daniel's female subordinate, should be able to do it instead, right?
After psyching herself up, Emily called Matilda.
Matilda could also tell that Daniel liked Emily. This was a perfect opportunity for the two of them to be alone together, so how could she possibly agree to Emily's request?
"Ms. Johnson, I'm sorry, but I'm out running errands right now. I'm afraid I can't deliver the clothes to Mr. Smith, so I'll have to trouble you, Ms. Johnson."
Since Matilda had said this, Emily couldn't very well question her or ask her to provide proof that she was really out on business.
"Emily, I forgot to bring my change of clothes in. Did Oliver bring the clothes over? Could you pass them to me?"
Daniel's voice seemed to have been washed by the steam, giving it an even more moist quality than usual.
Emily felt her ears burning and her heart racing.
"...Well, Oliver already brought the clothes over, but he had something urgent and left. I'll pass them to you. Just open the door a crack and I'll slip them through."
Hearing Emily's somewhat nervous and stammering voice, a smile that only appeared when spotting prey spread across Daniel's sexy face, covered in water droplets.
He replied in a low voice, "Alright, thank you!"
As Emily approached and knocked on the door, "Mr. Smith, your clothes..."
The door opened.
Emily closed her eyes, turned her head away, trying her best not to look toward the bathroom, and held out the clothes.
Daniel actually just wanted to tease her a bit. He wasn't being a creep by throwing the door wide open—he only opened it a crack.
But he fumbled around as if he couldn't quite locate the clothes, groping randomly in the air.
Several times he grabbed Emily's hand instead.
And each time, he very politely apologized, "Sorry, I only opened a small crack, so I can't see very clearly."
"It's, it's fine!"
Emily's face was completely red now, her mind blank. How could she possibly think about whether he was doing it on purpose or not?
If someone didn't like another person, this kind of scene probably wouldn't even happen, and Emily wouldn't have lost her composure and judgment.
But without realizing it, she had already fallen into the web of love Daniel had woven.
After several attempts, Daniel "finally" took the clothes.
Emily breathed a sigh of relief and quickly returned to sit on the living room sofa.
She slapped her face several times hard, finally managing to calm herself down.
Meanwhile, Daniel smiled triumphantly in the bathroom.
He quickly changed into his clothes. His hair was still somewhat wet, and when he came out, water droplets from his dripping hair ran down his neck to his collarbone.
Incredibly sexy.
Emily immediately thought back to that heart-pounding feeling when he had grabbed her hand while taking the clothes.
She couldn't keep thinking about this.
Seeing that Daniel didn't seem to be planning to leave, Emily changed the subject. "Did those people come looking for you last night? How did you resolve it?"
She turned to ask about last night's events, wanting to see if Daniel had found any clues about the person behind it all.
Daniel was also patient and didn't hide what happened last night.
"That person behind the scenes is clearly very skilled with poisons. I don't have any leads yet. You know more about this area—do you have any suspicions?"
Daniel asked casually.
Emily thought about it. "I don't know exactly what poison it is yet, but based on what those people said about the symptoms that occur monthly and needing an antidote each month, I can guess what poison it might be. But I'd need to check their pulse myself to be sure!"
Thinking about poison, for some reason Emily suddenly thought of Everett.
She spoke without thinking, "Speaking of that Everett—he's not exactly brilliant, yet he's been able to do these bad things for so long without being caught. Could he have some connection to the person behind this too?"
Actually, this poison and the drugs being manufactured weren't the same thing.
But the one thing they had in common was probably that once people used them, they couldn't help but be controlled.
Daniel had never thought in this direction before.
However, since Emily mentioned Everett, he knew a bit more about that.
Now that Emily had brought it up, he told her, "That Yosef died without treatment, and Everett is almost certainly facing the death penalty. He's confessed to some things. Their identities—they're actually relatives of the Stevens family. The Stevens family is one of the four major families in Emerald City. Whether the Stevens family was behind this or not, we can't be sure yet!"
Emily hadn't expected them to be from a major family.
"Then follow this lead and investigate. Maybe there'll be a pleasant surprise."
"Alright!"
Daniel naturally agreed.
Emily then said, "When can I check the pulse of those captured people? Since they can be controlled by the antidote, if I can develop an antidote on my end, we can naturally control them too. Maybe we can even turn the tables on them."
"No rush!"
Daniel was more concerned about Emily's health. "I heard it's about to kick in soon. Let them experience the pain of that poison first, then give them the antidote. They'll naturally be obedient, and most of the problem will be solved. For now, you need to take good care of your health. I've already made an appointment at the hospital. Later I'll take you to Emerald City for a full body checkup."
Emily realized that unless Daniel heard the doctor say her health was fine, he probably wouldn't be at ease.
"Okay, you arrange it then."
It was about lunchtime now.
Daniel had lunch delivered, and the two ate together in the room. Afterward, Daniel had Emily go rest.
Emily slept until almost 2 PM.
Daniel had made the appointment for 3 PM.
He came to Emily's room early.
However, Emily wasn't sleeping now. Instead, she was staring at her phone with a smile, completely absorbed.
When Daniel arrived, she opened the door with one hand while holding her phone in the other.
Her level of focus made even Daniel feel a bit jealous.
Daniel's eyes darkened as he secretly wondered who could be video calling Emily to make her so completely absorbed that she wouldn't even spare him a glance.
Suppressing his jealousy and unease, Daniel said lightly, "I came at a bad time. Did I interrupt your video call with a friend?"
Hearing this, Emily finally gave Daniel some attention.
"No, no, perfect timing actually. Let me show you something good!"
She was in a great mood and really wanted to share with someone.
Daniel was someone she trusted, and sharing happiness with a trusted friend could double the joy.
Emily naturally pulled Daniel to the sofa. They sat close together, and Emily had Daniel look. "This is Finn. He just got back and wanted to give me trouble. Byron and Sophia couldn't stand it, so they're helping me get back at him!"
Daniel watched Emily's genuine happiness.
He suddenly understood—so this was the kind of happiness Emily wanted?
If that was the case, then he could give her plenty of it.
Because of this one video call, from then on, anyone who provoked Emily got dealt with pretty badly.
