Chapter 225 She Was in So Much Pain
"How are you feeling?"
When Emily arrived, things were a bit different from what she'd expected.
She thought he'd be lying in bed all cold and sickly.
But the moment Emily walked in, she saw him weakly propped against the headboard, his eyes looking somehow resentful and pitiful.
This made Emily feel a bit guilty.
Like she was some kind of heartless woman.
"I'm the same as always. What could be wrong? Didn't you already give me medicine?"
Daniel's tone was flat, but his expression didn't match his words at all.
The sudden contrast almost left Emily at a loss.
She instinctively tried to soothe him, "Let me check on you again. Sorry, there was something urgent I had to look into. I wasn't abandoning you!"
"I'm fine!"
Daniel didn't know what was wrong with himself.
He just felt uneasy when he couldn't see her.
During that brief moment of unconsciousness earlier, he'd had a dream where she was injured, covered in blood, collapsed in front of him. In that moment, his despair and pain were so intense that he had this crazy thought.
He wanted to keep her locked tightly by his side, so that even if danger came, he could stand in front of her and protect her from it.
But the moment she spoke to him gently and softly, he immediately softened.
He even felt guilty—she had just gone through a life-and-death crisis too, and here he was needing to be comforted.
Daniel answered sullenly, but his eyes fell on her injured arm.
He directly ordered York, "Get the medical kit!"
York was stunned!
Mainly because Daniel said it so matter-of-factly, as if this were his own place.
Emily noticed Daniel's gaze on her arm and understood what he wanted to do. She quickly waved her hand, "No need, I'm fine. I'll just take care of it later!"
Daniel's eyes swept coldly over York, "What are you waiting for!"
Then, turning back to Emily, though forceful, his eyes couldn't hide his concern, "Come here, let me put medicine on it for you."
Emily, considering he was a patient and had saved her life, gave in.
"The medical kit is in the drawer of the living room coffee table."
Emily told York.
York looked at Emily gratefully and hurried to get the kit, afraid that if he was late, Daniel's anger would turn on him.
Daniel looked at the wound on Emily's arm and couldn't help frowning, "What was so important that you'd ignore your own health?"
He remembered that when Emily was helping him escape, he'd vaguely seen Knox through his haze.
Was she worried about Knox?
At the time, Knox had arrived just in time, allowing him and Emily to escape successfully. He was grateful and even willing to give up some benefits to the Green family as thanks.
But he just didn't want Emily constantly thinking about him because of it.
This left Daniel feeling conflicted and contradicted inside.
"It's nothing, I already had you look into it." Emily didn't want Daniel to worry and answered evasively.
Daniel probed, "Were you concerned about Knox? Is he safe?"
Emily didn't notice Daniel's conflicted emotions. Seeing he was also concerned about Knox, she naturally nodded, "He's fine. The law enforcement team coordinated with him and cleaned out that whole facility. It won't exist anymore, and the people held there have been rescued."
This was indirectly admitting that she'd just called Knox.
Daniel felt like all the vinegar in his heart was about to spill over.
He suppressed the sourness inside and said, "He saved me. I'll repay this life-saving debt, so you don't need to worry too much about him or feel any burden because of it."
He would bear this debt, so Emily wouldn't have to, and Knox wouldn't be able to use it to pressure her.
As a man, he could see Knox's intentions toward Emily all too clearly.
Emily hadn't expected Daniel to think of this, "He came at the right time, and we do owe him a favor, that's true. But I also gave him the rights to my newly developed medicine and a patent authorization, so neither of us needs to feel burdened.
Besides, he considers me a friend, so he probably wouldn't hold this over us!"
She said this with certainty, based on her memories from her past life and a natural trust in Knox.
Daniel felt much more at ease hearing her say she only considered Knox a friend.
And she'd said "us," which meant she considered them as one.
Visibly, Daniel's mood lifted.
The air changed from cold and tense to sweet.
When York came in, this was the atmosphere he felt. He had no idea what had happened in the brief time he was gone.
But Daniel was Daniel after all—he learned everything fast and accomplished whatever he set out to do.
And now, even in the matter of winning over Emily, he seemed to be making good progress.
"Mr. Smith, here's the medical kit."
York placed the kit by the bed and tactfully found an excuse to leave.
Only the two of them remained in the room.
Daniel directly pulled Emily over and used scissors to cut open her injured sleeve.
He focused carefully and gently applied medicine for her.
Treating her like a child, afraid of hurting her, he even blew on it repeatedly, "Bear with it, I'll be as gentle as I can."
His low voice carried an imperceptible tenderness.
"This little injury is nothing, I'm used to it. You don't need to be so careful."
When she was wandering outside before, she'd suffered much worse injuries.
Later, to protect the Johnson family, she'd endured even more beatings. She seemed to have long gotten used to worse pain.
This bit of pain really was nothing.
Emily said it casually.
But Daniel only felt something gripping his heart, making it ache sourly.
Girls Emily's age, like Veda for instance, were raised with endless love and care.
Even a tiny scratch, even when it was almost healed, would have a whole group of people feeling sorry for her.
But Emily said she was used to such a large wound!
He lowered his eyes, suppressing the turmoil within, and continued gently applying medicine bit by bit, while saying, "You won't have to get used to pain anymore. You can say when it hurts, and someone will care."
Emily's heart was struck.
No one had ever said this to her before.
Even in her past life, when she was dying and coughing up blood.
When she crawled away from the Johnson Villa, in so much pain.
Her mother hadn't cared if she was hurting, only cared whether Bianca could get a good organ.
Emily thought that living a second life had made her heart like stone, but at this moment she was still moved.
Her eyes reddened involuntarily.
She tilted her head slightly, forcing the tears back, "Thank you! Okay, the medicine's done. I'm going to change clothes!"
Not wanting Daniel to see her vulnerable side, Emily pulled back her arm as soon as he finished and wanted to escape.
Daniel saw her emotions. He respectfully said, "Okay."
Emily turned to leave, but could still feel the intensity of his gaze.
Until she left the room.
Daniel put away all his emotions. He called York over with a cold face.
"You were here the whole time just now. Was there anything unusual?"
An instinct told Daniel that something must have happened.
But perhaps due to his physical condition, his brain was still a bit slow, and he hadn't caught any useful information yet.
